I've not ridden in CO, but I have in Utah and Arizona and William is spot on: there are FAR fewer roads.
Most medium rides (60 miles) are out and back. To get any kind of a loop pushes the mileage up over 100.
For fun I just checked the shortest loop from Grand Junction, CO: 234 miles. (i guess the clue is in the town name)
((Two of my English friends lived in Fort Collins for a few years and while the riding was pretty good they simply could not cope with the whole pro-military/pro-life/pro-NRA/evangelical thing that they found way too pervasive.))
California varies, but I think one could live a happy life riding in Marin county.

Was in Colorado last Summer for "work". That in itself is BS, as a scientist I work in a lab, anywhere else, i.e. a conference centre, is just stupid. Hence I took it as time where I was being paid to travel and ride (I was outrageously unprofessional. Each morning the conference started at 9am. I would arrive 1045ish after having got back from my ride, showered and after stopping off at the rather impressive small coffee shop that Snowmass had).
I rode Independence Pass 4 mornings in a row! Brilliant. I am not sure about you Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens or NJ-side of the Hudson peeps, but Long island blows in comparison. I'll take the out and back in the mountains any day over this Soccer Mom, Humvee, cell phone AND Latte simultaneous use whilst driving, shitty roads shit where I live.

Riding around aspen is amazing. I did it in 2006 after not riding much for 10 years and it's what got me back into cycling.

After 27 years of riding and racing in NYC, and then a year ago moving to Switzerland, what NYC lacks in mountains is more than made up for with a healthy racing scene. Other than a winter velodrome, there is not much consistent racing going on here that I'm aware of. For a swath of the year, racers in NYC can compete up to 4 times per week without leaving the city. Guys in Colorado or most other parts of the country, need a car to race, and don't have as many choices. This is where you're very fortunate. And the riding outside of NYC is very nice. Of course, if you want to ride up a 26k/3000 meter altitude climb, or pedal on smooth hilly roads through vineyards, then you have to come here. That's the tricky part! At the moment British Airways has the best rate when taking bike fees into consideration. But always expect to spend at least around $900 and upward. Avoid United. Fly Swiss if you can afford it. If you're going to travel a lot, get a Ritchey Breakaway or a replica of Norm's super sweet English bicycle. Or rent a BMC here from Bike Switzerland (that's what Norm did when he visited last year). My method now for when I visit the States is I have a storage locker in Flatbush where I keep, amongst other detritus from my time in NYC, my old Fuji race bike.
