On more than one level:

Only 2500 tickets sold?? - Portland gets over 1000 racers every weekend.
Live internet stream?? A world championship event in the largest growing cycling participatory sport in the country and ESPN 32 can't get out there? Come on, these are grown men riding bikes in the cold mud. What could be more engaging?

When I do the remake of Barton Fink, I'll have the Hollywood producer ranting about this. "A cyclocross picture. Men in tights. Riding bikes in mud."

I am trying to get to KY for this thing to shoot (hopefully with at least a press pass if not a vest) but mostly to shoot more portraits that if you haven't seen by now can be seen in more and more places but mostly so far at digitalstillsucks.tumblr.com
I probably need to drive. I have three gear bags.13 hrs is nothing. I can knock out 7-8 hrs easily. Spoke to Mike Garrigan yesterday and might go with him. I'm told Conrad (spelling?) is driving? I have not been formally introduced. Anyone who plans on driving from NYC area call me or email me. In other words do not just post a note here. I will not get it. I do not get any alerts as to the forum and any action. It is a lousy means of communication ATMO.

Game plan is family stuff in NJ on Saturday

watch Sunday's events

rent a car and drive to Nashville for work either Sunday night or early Monday .

Anyone have room for one more either Sat or Sunday night (or both ) ?!

Got this email from USAC about room rates going up tomorrow. Does anyone have a spare spot Saturday and Sunday (I will gladly pay my portion of the room) .

A weekend pass is only $40 (single day tickets are $25) if you buy ahead of time. Prices WILL go up if you purchase at the gate. Many of the event's block rates at Louisville hotels END TOMORROW NIGHT, Jan. 10. So if you're planning on catching all the action, make your hotel arrangements now!

I feel like Powers will have a better showing at worlds than Page will.

Page's superpower isn't actually cyclocross, it's self-immolation. I can see him signing a bike sponsor a week before World's, but getting the bikes the night before the race and staying up til three in the morning building them himself. Or he'll switch his diet. Or get last-minute sponsorship from SRAM and rebuild his bikes the day of. Or he'll have a falling out with his temporary sponsor because he feels too much pressure.

The other thing is that if the conditions in Louisville are fast, Page's prowess in the muck will be worthless. Powers is better on a fast course. And Powers will have a much better starting position (page is 25th in the rankings).

And Page will probably bobble badly or crash on a fast section on the first lap, just to put himself in a hole. Then, he'll turn in some of the fastest laps of the race to latch on to the back of the second group, where he'll finish. About 18th.

In contrast, Powers, starting 12th, will have a great start, mix it up with the Belgians, and then fade. How far back, depends on the course conditions. Trebon, likewise, 17th on the grid, will blast out of the gate, get to the front, probably have some elbow-rubbing with a much-shorter Belgian (Nys or Albert will bump Ryan and then ride under his handlebars), get frustrated, lose focus, drop back, and then move up again. Johnson will ride steadily, a decent start, drop back,and then pick off riders to move up.

On the other hand, Kissena Mike Garrigan, ranked 106th in the world, I expect will put in an explosive start to get by the jet-lagged and unlucky, and then ride fairly steady. A fast course will see him trying to use his technical skills to move from group to group on the tricky sectors.

Canadian Mike, you out there? How do you see the race playing out?

Sorry if I sound chauvinistic but I want Francis Mourey to win. He often ends up in the top 5 during major races, just won the French championship therefore my prediction for him to win in Louiville is plausible.

Mourey is great at sticking in the top group for the first half and then fading, but slowly enough that he ends up with some good placings. He had a particularily good race in Rome so it looks like he is on form.

Heartily agree with JP on his analysis. For those of you think his assessment of Page is hyperbolic, don't. Because almost all of those things have happened in the past...almost exactly as JP described.
