Professional Dopers

Do you want to hear the "science" behind how they calculate these numbers?  I got robbed.

"We start our stopwatch at

a pre-determined point, where the

2009 Tour’s difficulties begin. We

stop it at the summit. Our measures

take into account obscure, but no

less important parameters, such as

frontal area, the coefficient of rolling

resistance, slope grade, and average

air density. It’s amazing to identify

“greatness” just sitting on a couch.

The kind of greatness that breaks

the 1.1 cyclopower barrier: 450

watts. That’s the Tour for you. I’ll skip

over other scientific considerations,

which rely on knowledge of human

physiology, like maximum VO2, the

endurance index, assorted biology,

and so forth. "

Ok, I stand corrected.  Buried at page 138 or 139 are several pages describing the math they used to indirectly "estimate" a relative watt measurement...
I've been following the discussion of creating a "truth and reconciliation commission" for doping in cycling.  I don't understand how it could work.  I thought about it too much and wrote this:

I like the point how our perspective would likely change if we knew the whole truth about these asshole's doping careers.

Myostatin.  Interesting stuff.

Poked Vaughters for a reaction...

I don't understand Vaughters' response. Did he read the same blog post? Almost sounds like he's reacting to piece that was circulating yesterday about unrealistic performances, and how they indicate doping.

Yeah and the weird CX reference... was he referring to JPow?
He's probably driving in the caravan while tweeting with one hand.

A source I have on the team tells me JV only drives when there is absolutely no one else to do it.
Virneque aka "Sr. Dickster" pimping Festina watches ? !   wonder if Lance will be pimping it for Nike and Trek in 15 years ????
And who could forget his specially formulated energy drink.
"I didn't take anything that was not taken by the others. It would only have been cheating for me if I had gotten an advantage which was not the case. I just wanted to ensure I had an equal opportunity." - Jan Ulrich

Its the same old line over and over again..

Of course, as he wasn't a client of Ferrari's, he didn't get an "equal opportunity" when compared to Armstrong, Vinokourov, and others.

But then, his opportunity was more equal than the scores of domestiques who couldn't afford the 40,000 Euro a year or greater fees Fuentes demanded.
The regularity of these statements is starting to sound focus group tested: the most socially acceptable explanation for completely unjustifiable behavior, somehow playing on public heartstrings in a way that will have the best chance to blossom into collective redemption 10 years from now. And a close cousin to "that's what it took to be in the bigs." JP has posted some great food for thought on the value of a truth and reconciliation process, but I wonder if the true value of that process might be to dilute and diversify this type of unrealistically simple narrative.
While it is the same old story, that doesn't mean that it isn't true.
@Joaquin I think you hit the nail on the head.

Trouble is, where there is money people will steal - probably in proportion to the size of the bags of dough they think they can get away with.

The trouble with Pro Cycling is that the money the riders "get away with" is so paltry compared to the other bit pro sports - until LA that is - I feel like it just the insiders (us) screaming bloody murder while the rest of the world looks on and shugs...
I am of the belief that this guy is ridin filthy dirty....

Why?  B/c he's like 150 lbs and can hold over 400 watts for an hour?  Big deal.
If he is 150 then I am Donald Duck
it's not doping.  it's his unique training regimen of kenyan drinking water and slow infection with schistosomiasis....ironic, i know, since you wouldn't think snail fever would make you *faster*.

It is also impossible to make over $100 million in fraudulent earnings....and destroy the career of honest people in the sport.....wait for it....WITHOUT DOPING !

http://news.yahoo.com/winning-without-doping-impossible-says-armstrong-075119465.html
this is rich...."The USADA 'reasoned decision' perfectly managed to destroy a man's life but it has not benefited cycling at all."  If destroying people's lives were a cycling discipline, this guy would have rainbow stripes.
This one makes me want to kick him right in his junk !!

Armstrong calls the conclusion in the USADA report that the US Postal system was the most sophisticated doping system ever “bullshit”. The Texan says the system Spanish gynaecologist Eufemiano Fuentes implemented was 100 times more sophisticated. “Our system was very simple, very conservative and not as harmful as USADA claims.”

Tyler Hamilton, Manzano & Ullrich all got "bad blood bags" from Fuentes.  Lance's adversaries were buying their drugs one notch above a back alley...Lance used Ferrari, the doping equivalent of the Mayo Clinic.  Lance paid Ferrari for an exclusive...thus forcing his adversaries to use a clearly inferior Dr.. One last analogy...Lance had a shopping concierge assist him at Lord & Taylor, the rest of the field had to fight it out in the bargain bin at Walmart.
I am so disgusted and disappointed in this Lance Armstrong person.  He is using the centenary of the Tour de France to advance his personal agenda.  He shows an utter lack of contrition and respect.  The BEST thing the Tour and cycling can do for the next month would be to completely ignore him.  The argument can be taken up again in August.  For now, he is Lord Voldemort....we do not speak his name!
OK, I won't read the article. I don't like the idea of yahoo 'news' anyway.
What a pitiful, narcissistic, bitter man.
His comments are in-character to say the least - but let's not heap this all on him.  It's the 100th anniversary of the Tour and I'm sure every journo and his three-legged dog is calling his agent trying to get a quote or an interview.

Given that these things are often paid - and he has experienced some "financial turbulence" one cannot expect him to remain mum.

Jules,
I doubt Armstrong got paid for this.  He had an agenda.  My guess is he's trying to discredit Tygart and the "reasoned decision" against him as well as build interest in a truth and reconciliation commission.

I read the article and armstrong makes the absurd claim that USADA was trying to destroy him and that USADA acts as if he created doping.  He also gets in the TRC idea.

As usual, Armstrong is all hat and no cattle.

Dickipedia: Lance Armstrong

Today, Lance Armstrong:

Early Life

Lance Armstrong began his dick time trials as Lance Edward Gunderson, son of Linda Gayle Mooneyham and Eddie Charles Gunderson. The two named him, for some reason, after Lance Rentzel, a middling Dallas Cowboys wide receiver best known for indecently exposing himself to a 10-year-old girl. Lance took the last name Armstrong from one of the three more husbands his mother would go on to have, astutely recognizing that he’d get a lot further in life as an Armstrong than a Gunderson.

Armstrong also goes by the nickname Mellow Johnny, adapted from “Maille Jaune,” which is French for “I use the fact that I had cancer as an excuse for doing things like taking steroids and divorcing my wife so I could nail an Olsen twin.”
