Hey good news? I was listening to WNYC's The Brian Lehrer Show and he had a segment about the recent crack-down on bicyclists by the NYPD. I don't remember the name of the "expert" he had on, but he is in charge of gathering a lot of data and seemed to know what he was talking about. A few important things that came up.

1. Police agree to only ticket red-light runners in CP when there are pedestrians attempting to cross.
2. The STATE law that says we have to ride in a bike lane if one is available, is not applicable to NYC. A judge recently threw a riders ticket out of court for this reason.
3. Clear as a bell? Unclear if we are required by law to have a bell or other type of signaling device on our bikes. This guy hasn't been able to find a definitive answer, but a caller noted he got $130 lumped onto his $270 red light running ticket for not having a bell.

WNYC transportation nation is putting together a map of all the ticketed bicycles. Unfortunately there is no working map yet, but I hope it comes soon. Preliminary results suggest that most tickets are coming from the CP and Midtown North Precincts. That may be reporting bias, I doubt many Chinese delivery guys in Flushing listen to WNYC, and wouldn't be reporting their tickets online if they're getting them.

Ok, this isn't the full climb and descent, but if you watched it live, it was pretty great. I can't help but think that the motorbike might have had something to do with Salerno's crash, b/c for a good portion, there was one crammed between him and Cunego as he was gaining on the downhill. Sagan made up the distance and took the win, so I guess that makes up for it in the teammate sense.

You see Cunego almost bite it a couple of times. And just how poor a descender Ten Dam is compared to Sagan (not that I can blame him considering how wet some of the corners looked).

On another note, if you watched the Dauphine, Chris Anker Sorenson has the awesomest climbing face.

@Jeff: Exactly what you said. It was really an awesome stage to watch from home. And you've gotta be impressed by Sagan's ability to hang on up that climb. He's someone to watch in next year's hilly classics, I think.

Just watching the motos try to video the action and stay out of the descending riders' lines is totally nerve wracking. The motorcycles, for me, are one of the coolest things about professional racing. I would pay funny money to ride on the back of one of those things with a camera, or even as a chalkboard girl.

Watching Thomas Voekler descend mighty mountains the other day was impressive. The racing line that we talked about at the criterium workshop was on display in full 1080p HD as he caught and passed his breakaway companion--that guy was nailing the apex of every switchback with textbook precision.

I think you're mistaken. They train and train and train on open roads. They get faster and more confident in training, knowing how to let it rip when there's a chance of cars around. And then they go a bit further when the roads are closed. Years ago, I did some training rides with Phil Anderson, a star of the Euro circuit at the time. Tried following him down a small, open, mountain road. He was taking it easy. I was unable to stay close.

the point being that warm-ups may not be necessary. Though I think the comparison of warmups for bowlers versus cyclists might be a kind of false comparison. Of course the comments section is fantastic, most commenters are not athletes but for normal folks going out for a run or playing a little weekend tennis a warm-up is unnecessary, but if you're going to be competing that is a completely different story. They are confusing the two.

A short TT warmup would destroy the average bowler.
