Edwin, I'd definitely advise getting a little more experience before racing - if you can make it to the track this Sat or Sun you can get a "proper" intro to it then (see my separate thread in Group Rides). Safety on the track is paramount and racing in a bunch can get sketchy pretty quickly if you've not done it before. What do you mean by "flights" by the way?
I'd love to make to the Series but won't be able to get out of work early enough. Might try and get to one or two nearer my target races for training purposes...
There's been chat by Andrew LaCorte on Facebook about starting a series on Monday nights too.
Oh, I see what you mean. That's a weird (to me anyway) way of saying "round" or even just "race". You might have mixed up the races tho - that's the schedule for the Spring Classic on May 12th (which you should also consider signing up for). That's made up of five races for every category of rider held over the same day - known as an omnium. But in answer to your original question, each round of the Twilight Series will be three or so different flights/rounds/races for each category that are held over one evening (as every race is pretty short).
I'll see what I can do re getting you a loaner for this Sunday - we don't automatically have access to the cabin where they're kept.
definitely the coldest twilight series i've ever done.
The 3/4 went like this.
3 lap scratch, bunch of roadies with big legs going every which direction. I found myself far back but managed to squeeze out 3rd.
Points race I counter attacked after the first sprint and found my self in a break with Karl Nelson for the remainder. I think i got 2nd. Mattie did a good job blocking and covering Wagner's bridge attempts
Chariot, got the dick spot and didn't qualify for the final heat. Mattie did however make it into the final and beat Karl Nelson which could be of value for my omnium placing.
Alyosha and Aaron looked good in the 4/5 category.
A tempo is like a point a lap... but points go two deep instead of one deep.
Second place in the Omnium.
Fun night. Highlight was riding away from the field with Al Barouh in the tempo race and some how squeezing out the win... Ancient Aliens? But seriously, Al was one of several factors that i thought would be standing between me and a state championship.
Josh had his work cut out for him in what looked like a pretty stacked cat. 5 field. Nevertheless he was hanging in there and making moves.
Fun first week back at the track. And my father came out for the warmup and race 1 to boot. I would love to see the pictures.
I was with the pack in the scratch race 6 lap scratch race, and was too focused on the guy in front of me. At 3 to go, a gap opened and I got caught behind his wheel. I tried to close the gap(didn't ) but held on with other folks thinking the same thing, and made sure to beat a guy or two coming across the line for my photographer\parent. He enjoyed coming out..his new goal is to build up to riding out to the velodrome and back.
Race 2, 3 lap tempo race, swarmed in sprint 1, no chance after that for sprint 2 or 3, just held on to make sure I finished not last.
Race 3, 9 lap points race, similar results to race 2
more sprinting work necessary! I am just trying to maintain some general fitness for the next few weeks until the wedding (and survive all the pre-wedding stuff).
@Josh - don't worry, there's plenty of sprint work we can do with you ;-) You need to work out what gears you have - not use trying to train certain things if you don't know what you're riding. Count that mystery front ring and let me know your rear sprocket numbers. Once you get done with minor things like getting married and everything ;-)
@Andy - good race face in those pictures - combine with standing start grunting and you're on to a winner! ;-)
Hey little help here...what tubulars should I buy for my track bike? A buddy of mine says just get a good pair of road tubulars. Problem is, I have no idea what those are...I guess I could just get the non-moldy version of the ones currently encrusted to my wheels...
I'm trying to pick up a pair of those too. A lot of people use them at T-town. I've used the same set of Continental Sprinters for the past 3 seasons, at both tracks, and they have worked fine. I don't know the difference, but if I had to guess I'd say the Stehers are a little lighter and have more of a grip. I think Challenge makes a durable track specific tire too.
