Happy Birthday (Rides, Drinks, Condolences, Muffins)

Hey all - As many of you know, I'm moving to KY in a couple of weeks; my wife got a teaching job at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.  Besides bourbon and barbecue, I'm looking forward to quiet roads and rolling hills of green, and a backyard where I can hose down my bike after a muddy ride.

What I'm not looking forward to is leaving Kissena - for three years, this club has been my team, my group of confidantes and my partners in shenanigans.  I came to Kissena because a few of my buddies were on the club, and because I was already racing at the Kissena velodrome; I stayed because I couldn't imagine another club that would've been as badass, as encouraging and as hilarious.  I will miss you all, as I search in vain for a club in KY that will fill the massive hole in my heart.

Time has suddenly become very tight for me here, and I doubt I'll have the time to have a proper send-off; nevertheless, I hope to see some of you on the road in the next two weeks.  NYC will always be my home - my brother is expecting a baby in September, and my folks live close by so I'll be back often to visit. Peace and godspeed to y'all - see you on the flip side if I don't see you soon.
We'll miss you Tito.
Maybe you can start a new craze of cave riding.
In any case, we know they have 'cross in KY.
Tito,
I'm blushing.

I agree with this cromulent statement.  Excelsior!
Bump.

Because of strep and travel, I did my birthday ride yesterday.

Wasn't feeling great, and the day was sure to be hot, hot, hot, but if not then, I didn't see it happening for another few weeks.

Whooaaaa, zombie thread revival!
Just before the time cut of Labor Day, I finally managed to get in the big birthday ride again.  Cooler weather made it much easier.  Didn't have to stop as much.  Took a few new turns on the latter half of the ride.  Next year, going to try got get to Mt. Airy before dropping back to the Hudson.

JP, your cromulence is overwhelming.
Legit birthday suffering.
Again with the late birthday ride.

Added Mt. Airy Road.  Oy! who knew it would go up a big hill?  But it was nice and quiet and the descent to to Croton was awesome.

It's good to see the above.  This year, the ride was over 116mi, and 9600' of climbing.

Stopped for liquids five times.

Wasn't able to ride as hard.  the difference is 400kj fewer even though I did thee more miles and climbed much more.

Another year, another birthday ride.  The longest one yet.

123 miles.  I added the Tappan Zee Bridge Bike Path, which, of course, meant crossing back on the GWB.

Interestingly, of oddly, only 9818' of climbing, according to Strava.  It was at 10,578 when I stopped the Bolt at my front door.  I would have expected more, as I thought the hills on 9W would have been a good bit more climbing than riding the east bank of the Hudson home.

Stopped for liquids five times as well.  And still came home 5lbs lighter than when I left.

And I found another use for the ice vest.  Chilling after getting home.
amazing ride. happy birthday!!

at least you weren't everesting ;)

I think you know this... the bolt, and most garmins and other bike computers, estimate elevation by using barometric pressure, which is a cheap way to do it, and while accurate enough, not really all that accurate.

Strava/Training Peaks/etc... can override the altitude and replace it with map data, which I assume has better detail, but no idea how that is calculated.

Very, very impressive ride.

Thanks.

Yes, there's barometric pressure readings that are recorded.  Depends on the second and the computer apparently.  Training Peaks doesn't seem to override the readings, though WKO5 does.  Strava does.  Strava also "smoothes" out some of the data if there isn't sufficient change.
Training Peaks and Strava treat it differently, I don't think/know they did it automatically tho.

Strava:

Training Peaks:

Sidenote: Notice those little red dips when the computer captured a hill, those are bridges, which the topo data almost always underestimates, as the topo info includes the gap on the terrain, instead of the bridge rise. This too could help explain the difference between the Strava reported gain vs the watch gain.
thanks for the chart.

Seems that Strava is doing more than TrainingPeaks.

My TrainingPeaks data for elevation gain seems to be the same as what I saw on my computer.  Maybe it's because I have the free version.

Another year started.  Another Big Badass Birthday Ride.

I think it's the first time in years I've done it on my birthday.

Last year, I stopped five times for drinks.  This year, twice.

Thanks to the century I did with Rob Panzera in May, I had a new route from Peekskill to Tarrytown.  Way more climbing on the way back but way more interesting.  I added enough miles there and was getting short on time that I didn't cross the Tappan Zee this year.  But, like last year, I seemed to get a second wind in the final hour or so.

Just a pleasant day to be out on the road.

@mugwump happy Bday man! Didn't know your bday was 3 days before mine! Did a century today, one day short of my bday! 🙌

So glad.  Hopefully, you got a party in your honor afterward.

Or at least a massage.

Bump.

Got in the big, bad, birthday ride today.

Yes, it was hot, yes it rained on me three times--but at least I started at 10 and avoided the early thunderstorm.  And, yes, it was slow.

I think I drank at least 8 bottles.  And I still came home close to 5lbs lighter.

Did a new variation from Croton.
