Kissena Women's Team

Bump for Thursday AM women's computrainer sign up. We have 5 of 8 spots filled right now, and ideally I'd like them all filled by tomorrow afternoon. @Gwynna, feel free to invite the non-Kissena ladies you had in mind as back-up.

Reminder that the sessions will start promptly at 7:15 am every Thursday through February and March. It's great training and motivation, and worth the extra effort in getting over to Ride BK.

Marc, returning to the Central Park clinic convo: I think we probably shouldn't try to wriggle through the runner crowds. It seems like there will be a whole lot of, "So, over there where that huge truck is, you'll want to..."

I can do the 15th as long as we are done by 9 am. Open to other suggestions.
15th works for me too. Agree, I'm thinking staying out of CP when 3000-5000 runners are clogging things up seems to be the prudent thing to do. And we can start at 8am, that means the Brooklyn kids won't have to get up too early...although everyone who plans on racing in the parks, might as well get used to setting that alarm fu-EARLY.

Just noticed some women race for free in the AVD Spring Series:

Registration is open for the CRCA's women's 3/4 dev series: https://www.bikereg.com/Net/crca-womens-development-series

Large field limit. Registration deadline is the Thursday before each race.
Hi all! This is my first post in the forum! woo! Sorry I am very bad at forum activeness....
I would be down for the March 15th clinic, though I am def not in racing shape.
I am looking forward to signing up for as many cat 4/5 races as possible just to get out there...is there a spreadsheet or something going showing what races all us ladies have signed up for?
Hey @Glori, welcome to the forum! Not sure if you attended the Kissena ladies' meeting with @Dale (I was unable to attend) but there's a Google doc spreadsheet floating around with an ever-growing and tiered list of races: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiJ4AFqQV0TEdGdiUTlyVllSb2o5N0Qwb3NUVmw0NkE&usp=sharing

(If you can't access that, let me know. The owner of the doc might need to invite you to it via email.)

Many of the local women's 3/4 and women's 4 races are great even if you're not "in race shape." You'll at least gain some experience trying to read the field, or figure out what to eat (or not eat) before a race. Plus you'll meet the local women's peloton (it's a very good idea to keep your eye on a handful of them.) See my post above for a link to the Central Park women's development series. My first race was part of last year's dev series... I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but it was exhilarating!

I'd also encourage you to join the Kissena women for the CompuTrainer sessions at Ride Brooklyn on Thursday mornings. I think there's a spot open for this week!
@erika Awesome! thank you...very helpful!
I would LOVE to do the CT sessions...but I am freelance and if I am working (like this thurs) it is not early enough for me to be at work showered and clean for 830 :(
But I would be able to do one of the PM sessions
Hey @Glori, totally check the CompuTrainer thread to see if there's spots available for the Wednesday evening sessions. There often are, and I know @Jessica attends a lot of them.

Okay, so I'm about to drop another TWO clinics on you and make it official. So there...

"Olmsted's Order: Deciphering Central Park" (two separate dates)

Where: East 79th (?) in the park; traditional start/finish line of CP races
When: March 1 AND March 15, 7:30-8:30am
What: Course review/ride through and tactical notes. Will work on approach to final sprint as time/crowds allow.
Who: All KCC members (friends/family welcome too, but let me know ahead of time so I can bring release forms or something)

Additional notes:
  • Again, lots of stopping and starting here to allow me to point out lines, approaches, exits, etc., in a way that everyone can hear. Dress appropriately.
  • Also, I've ADDED a second date on March 1, for those who are planning to race the first AVD Spring Series race and want to get clinical the day before. As of now, however, it seems the more popular date will be on the 15th, when several from the women's team have already written the date in their calendars.
  • While many chose not race CP in the spring there are two bigger later season races in CP that are very popular with the club. And being successful in CP is challenging. Can be easy to finish with the bunch, but placing is a whole 'nother thing. So, you know, something to think about...

The tactics talk is this Thursday 2/27/14, 7pm. at the commonwealth bar.

corner of 5th Ave. and 12 St. in Park Slope

F, G, R trains all stop fairly close.

Yes! Get your strength up. @Gwynna I'm depending on drafting you on that
one lap ;-)

I'm interested to join for both sessions as long as my schedule allows. Can
I confirm the day before?

When is the next tactics talk? I can't make this one on Thursday. But I know it will be helpful.
I can't make march 1st but can def do the 15th...
Are any other ladies planning on going to the tactic talk this Thursday?
Also I'm gonna join @jessica for tomorrow's 730pm CT sess
@gwynna feel better!
Since I'm racing CP on the 8th, I'll be at both clinics. Also will be going to the tactics talk on Thursday night and Computrainer session Thursday morning. Whether my legs will be attending Computrainer is another story... I think the airline misplaced them on my flight back from CA training camp.

@Gwynna road is a loooong season! Get well, get strong, and know that there are a ton of Kissena women who can't wait to race with you (and a ton of non-Kissena women who are dreading racing against you!)
I'm traveling a ridiculous amount. Training camp would have worked out for me if I'd had my act together and figured out it was happening! But I can't do my computrainer session tomorrow at 6pm so please, anyone, take it! Also, Gwynna or anyone else, I live a few blocks from Ride so if anyone wants to sleep over on a Weds night or shower for work after, please feel free.

As for the tactics talk, out of town, and out of town for both March 1 & 15th. Too many conferences this spring! But after that I can be around and will just commit to whatever "dev" races I can -- assuming that means "developing racers who will be able to race someday"? I did sign up for and commit to a big road ride in Colorado in early June so maybe after that I'll be in better shape. Who knows. Mostly I'm just having trouble finding a good training routine. Thanks for your patience! I'll see some of you sometime I hope!
Dear Erika -- I have a conference on March 22 but it's at NYU and i don't have to be there until 11am. If I do that dev race on that day will I be finished by then?
Sincerely,
A complete novice
@Meredith, Do what you can with what you have, whenever time allows.  It's a long season and even sporadic efforts will help in the long run.

Most of our mentors have been on the club for upwards of ten years; if you can't make a clinic rest assured you'll be able to find them on a group ride and pick their brains.
oh just saw the start time. that would have to be one slow race!
Hi @Meredith! The park races start very early to avoid the weekend crowds. The women's 3/4 race on the 22nd is 4.8 laps and rolls out at 7am-ish (which is actually on the later side). At a conservative 20mph, the race would be over in less than 90 minutes. If you can do whatever you need to do for your conference in the 2.5hr window that affords you, awesome! I'd offer you use of my midtown pied-a-terre for freshening up, but I don't have one :)
@erika - Yoko said we can use hers. No big deal

Ugh. Unexpected work commitment might conflict with my ability to attend the tactics talk. Will still be at Computrainer!

Quick heads-up announcement. I've been asked not to cross-post my clinic announcements, so please "star" and/or check the Mentoring thread periodically to keep up to date on what's going on. Thanks! Looking forward to seeing many of you in the next few weeks as this season kicks off.
Benchmark: First all-ladies computrainer session this morning. We got a late start (Lindsay had to leave before the end of the "course" to get to work), but things will run much smoother next Thursday.

Thanks to everyone who could make it to Ride Brooklyn this morning--great seeing you all.

PS: @Erika was a blur of tanned legs this morning, despite claiming she was wiped out from training camp. Let's cheer for her at Grant's Tomb, where she will undoubtedly do quite a bit of ass-kicking.
