Hi ladies and gents!
I am going to try to make it tonight to the rapha thing (if works allows, so hope to see some of you there!)
I also was thinking of something....
Do you think it would be totally nuts and useless to do the race this weekend also? I'm not signed up, but am a spontaneous kinda gal and if y'all thought it wouldn't be tooooo crazy I would do it & sign up now.
That being said, I feel very slow and outta shape...but I figured...heck...maybe try?? 4.8 seems daunting!
thoughts??
and of course super good luck Erika & Gwynna!!!!

Glori this is a great race to jump into at the last minute. Small, dry, near to home - they don't get much better.

Very rare are the days when you get to race at peak fitness, with plenty of rest with all your stars aligned.

This is one of the great lessons to learn; how to do the most with what you happen to have on the day without psyching yourself out (one lap Gwynna?) before the race even starts.

Go have fun!
Woohoo! @Gwynna decided to race! With only two other teams with multiple ladies in the field (and I'm not even sure Dave Jordan's is working/riding together anymore) this will be a great opportunity to race smart and have fun!

These races tend to draw out a handful of lone wolves, especially when the cat 3s are absent. That's not to say these women aren't strong and smart racers, but it does make it easier to encourage someone (usually in non-team kit or tri/fondo kit) to take the front, then just sit back and wait for them to blow up and fall off the back. They don't have teammates to tell them to back off, nor the race experience to tell them that being on the front for all of lap 3 of 4 doesn't mean they're "winning."

Women I'd look out for:

Erica Berthou, unattached. As experienced as me (our USAC results profiles are nearly identical); Annoying half-wheeler who has a tendency to ride up between two tightly packed women, which has been the cause of both of my near crash experiences in park races. She tends to place well in CP.

Iliana Rabun-Wood, Kruis CX. Super strong and lots of experience. She was previously on Pink Rhino and is a great sprinter. In park races, I've seen her get discouraged and fall off the back if she's not doing well. She placed 5th at Grant's.

Fanny Bourdais, Rockstar Games. Super strong, lots of experience, blah blah. She's tenacious and is typically the lead out for other riders on her team. She's alone, so I'd watch out for her to be reading the field and preparing to (finally) take the win for herself.

Oksana Miller, Stan's NoTubes. I think she's the only Stan's woman who is a cat 4, so  you know she's looking to win win win to upgrade upgrade upgrade!

Let's keep our cool, play it smart, and see what happens. I sincerely doubt you'll be dropped @Gwynna. (And if you are, make sure you take a few others with you!)

Oh, and all of the women's dev races qualify for USAC upgrade points, which I believe that means they must meet minimum distance requirements (or duration requirements for crits).

@Gwynna Smith‌ I once spent a season chasing a goal of a sub hour 40km TT... Got a cold the week before, didn't sleep great and travelled (solo) to a shitty motel nearby. I was not feeling good on race morning.

Thing is, if you want to hit a goal like that you more or less have to commit from pedal stroke number one.

So I decided to try ignoring what my BRAIN was telling me, and just find out what my legs would actually do. It was a leap of faith, but I made it, and made the time too.

Long winded way of saying don't give up anything without a fight, especially three days before the whistle blows!

Woohoo @Glori!

Thanks for the intel @Gwynna! I think this is going to be an interesting race. Most, if not all, of the other CP races will be 3/4 fields, and after the CRCA women's clinic in late April, I expect an influx of completely green cat 4s into the women's peloton. But this early in the season, the cat 4s are (mostly) experienced racers, and perhaps because of all the racing opportunities for women last year, they're also without their cat 3 teammates.

I'm planning to get there about 6:15am, warmed up from my 10mi schlep from Brooklyn, with just enough time to pin my numbers (in the women's bathroom) and get to the line without getting too cold.

A bit later this season I'll join in as one of the completely green racers you can rightly throw the side-eye at.  Meanwhile, good luck experienced ladies!

or those wondering what they'll do Sunday 3/21/14,
Remember there is.....
Our Early Season Day at the Velodrome
http://kissenacycling.vanillaforums.com/discussion/110/the-kissena-early-season-day-at-the-velodrome-track-on-road-bikes#latest

Worry not.  The velodrome is pretty flat.  No lights.  No traffic. Great sight lines. If you get dropped, you can wait several seconds and jump back in.  If you want to observe, you just pull out and watch.  There will be instruction, advice, drills, thrills, and I hope no spills.

And even tired you can get going really fast.

Here is your chance to work on all important pacelining, bridging, and lead out skills.  These will come in handy at approximately all mass-start races you do.
@erika @gwynna ..... OK I did it! signed up! totally not ready for this, but looking forward to see you two rock it!!!
@mugwump that sounds fun also.... what about those without track bikes?
Look at @Glori being all stealth an unattached on BikeReg ;)
Oooh, that reminds me! Ladies make sure you've renewed your USAC license for 2014. You can buy a 1 day license at Central Park, but why pay a premium and delay the inevitable? I just received my new card in the mail yesterday. (I renewed my license at 4:45am two weeks ago before heading off to Central Park / Grant's Tomb... oops!)

@erika ahahahaha!!! whoops! I obviously have no idea what I am doing! I think I fixed it :)
@erika @glori @gwynna

Have FUN!!!

I'll see you all later.

No need to deal with a one day license. Just go to USA cycling web site and pay the annual fee. Then go to your profile. Click on tab that says license. Then click on button that days 'Print Authorization to Ride'. You can use that print out until your license arrives in the mail.

Or download the USAC app for iPhone (don't know if they have an android version) and you can show your license via the app at registration. No printing required.

FWIW, Sunday's day on the track is for ROAD BIKES.

Hello Ladies,

Hope everyone is doing well and finally able to get some riding in on the intermittent warmer days.  For those of you who have been meaning to get the bike out and start riding again--now is the time.  And to start you off on the right foot, I highly encourage you to come to the Kissena Velodrome on Sunday at 9 to work on many of the riding and racing drills and techniques that we talked about at the kickoff meeting. You don't need a track bike.  Road bike only!  Don't fear the velodrome, (I haven't ridden on them much myself,)  just think of it as a closed flat course for us to practice riding together and to better understand race tactics.  I'll be out there with a few of the other mentors, and if we can get enough of the women out there, we can split off and do our own thing.

If you've never raced before, this will be a great primer to riding in a pack attacking out of the group.  Hope to see you there.

Sounds fun and mildly terrifying, I'll try to make it...
Hi Dale.

Is this a kissena only event?
On Mar 21, 2014 8:13 AM, "Dale Suttle" <
@Daniella (and others) - The way to join Kissena is to ride with us, which is exactly the purpose of the scheduled New Member Rides. However, any prospective new member who rides with us in any context and demonstrates the basic skills required to ride as part of a group can join Kissena. So you should always feel free to invite prospective members to Kissena rides so they can meet us and we can meet them.

THAT SAID, though this seems to me like the perfect opportunity to meet new folks, if the mentors organizing this say it's an inappropriate venue for prospective new members, then we should respect that.

In general, events which I organize and lead are open to prospective members.

This event, to the best of my current knowledge, is going to be led by myself, Dale Suttle and Patrick Grehan. I'm cool with prospective members participating as long as they are comfortable riding in a fairly tight paceline. If they have never ridden in a pack, wheel to wheel, they are still welcome to come but may be asked to sit out certain more advanced drills. Road bikes on the track with their coasting and brakes and what not creates an interesting dynamic that is not to be taken too lightly.
Thanks for clarifying!

Daniella

Depends how much you like spraying WD-40 on your kit to get the oil spots out (that works a treat btw).
