FBF Graveyard Series

But if Vlad took three weeks off from racing he wouldn't be....wait for it...............THE FUCKING VLADIATOR !!!
I set 20 minute and 60 minute power records today. Hard day but good overall. Led Vlad out for a prime and he had a nice finish too. No idea about results. Possibly top 20 or top 10?? Who knows but great workout. Ze Germans were fast indeed.

Also- Yacks. I left my knog light in your trunk today. Let me know when I'll see you again. Next FBF race in sept maybe?
Ok...but what the hell is a knog light ? And keep your junk outta my trunk hoss !!!
Craig #'s please...I showed u mine... Now you gotta show me yours.
300 watts normalized and 278w avg for 60 mins.
306w avg for 20 minutes and broke a 1k a couple times in the sprints. I think max was 1029w in the final sprint but I was pretty spent.

Past few times has been like this. Just missing the aggro front group but strong and able to stay at the front of the 2nd group without a problem. All good though- form is coming along for cross!
Respect
So I went to Floyd again...and got shelled again.  This time after 20 minutes.  I did find out that I can race the III IV field if I'm over 35...since I'm 43 that's happening.
Vlad had another good race...chasing the big move stacked with Lupus guys...who won.
Yacks

p.s. Craig I gave your nog light to Vlad as I'm sure he will see you before I will
Yacks- this makes me sad. I was planning on doing this race again October 5th. It's such a fun, brutal mess, I can't stay away. Perhaps you'll have a change of heart.
Oh you'll see me...when your field laps mine  :)
I shall cross swords at this gathering on tomorrow's eve...
Dropped...and dropped early...goodnight 2014 season...I got 5 months to put some hay in the barn.
How did it go Vlad?
Well someone in the Yack clan had success today...I'm gonna let her coach me from now on.
Another hard one at Floyd. Maybe the hardest? I was about to blame it on my fitness but then I saw the power numbers.

First 10 minutes were 333 NP. 301 NP for the hour and that was just to hang on. It was too windy to hide effectively. The numb-nuttiness of the combined field didn't help smooth things out either.

Yeah Vlad, but what about your heart? I'm glad you asked. I spent 85% of the race at or above threshold. My asthma can really appreciate that stat.

That's basically a big middle finger from my heart.

Vladi and I finished in what remained of the pack with about a handful of dudes up the road claiming all the lunch money.

Only 2 more left. Come and get it!
If I could make it through those 1st ten minutes...never mind. I might consider doing 300 watt ten minute intervals but I think it would serve me better to put it in dry dock and get the barnacles off. Going to take a break from the bike, put together a weight training program and a new diet. Then I'll get a plan to build up slowly for next season. Time to do some things radically different than what I've been doing for years. Working the core and leg muscles is top on the list. Hoping to have a sprint that will make you crap your bibs next year...with that I bid you adieu-dieu (see what I did there???...crap your bibs...dieu dieu...screw it, see u next year)
Yacks
I might want some of that numb-nuttiness next week.

Have at it...I'm goin pumpkin pickin
Next one is on Monday, Columbus Day. 33 laps ~40 miler.

My heart wants to explode just reading that
Vlad and I went to the non-series Graveyard race yesterday.

As pointed out by the promoters, we had to be there for Kissena.  More like we had to race hard and score, but whatever, nice and chummy.  Pretty low-key overall.  And about zero wind when we started, a rarity.

We started about 20 minutes late.  Would have been 15, but they got word two of the Burrowes' were en route.  THink we started with 18 riders.  Two from Triangle, four from United, Karl of Mengoni, Zack of Blue Ribbon, an Amoroso's guy from Philly, a BH guy, Rob from Major Taylor, some others.

Vlad thought the smart move was to be conservative at the start.  I thought it was to watch for Karl and Zack to try to get into a break with a Triangle and United. A good balance of approaches.

Karl put in the first attack.  I followed, kept rolling.  got a gap.  Was caught.  In the opening laps, there were lots of little attacks, but no one was either decisive enough nor was the field interested in letting a move go.

Then the strong guy from Triangle attacked and got a gap.  With nothing doing, I rolled off to see if I could either make headway against him without digging too deep or get a group.  Got neither.  His gap got big, like 30 seconds.  It was around this time, I realized Vlad wasn't with us.  He had flatted.  "Only me," I thought and tried to re-evaluate what I needed to do.

Then I realized my right cleat was coming loose.  It's been in one position for months and chooses this day to loosen up.  We come around, and Vlad has a fresh wheel.  I try a few more things, but realize the cleat is quickly becoming too loose to pedal on.

I stop at the finish line, try tightening up my cleat--the promoter wants to let me back in if I can get it together in a lap.  I couldn't.

I watch Vlad sit comfortably until the poor shifting on the new rear wheel makes it impossible to follow attacks.  He's out, too.

We watch the field close in on the solo break.  Then Karl goes across.  The field, frustrated by the one triangle guy and the fact that only two of the Uniteds are chasing while everyone else watches, gives up.  Karl wins a pretty nice trophy.

A bad way to end the race; we had legs.  Just not our bikes.
I had to take a look at the data before I put up this post. I had an off day. I think I was tired from this weeks training. Off the back after maybe 3 laps, then to add insult to injury, caught a safety pin in the rear bead and flatted out just a lap or two later. I could still see the group.

Despite all that, I am finding some solace in United's sentiments that the Triangle guys are in 'phenomenal shape for this time of year' and that their 'program' is really working from them. Yep.

One more left.
Vlad...wish I was there with you today but I volunteered at my towns 5K run...Hannah ran it and then went to a soccer game.

I TOTALLY agree with that assessment of the Triangle riders....

7 guys off and the race is over
Ah the brevity of a FBF race report.
5 minutes at about 365 watts and Yacks goes bye bye.  Went home and rode the computrainer.... suck it 2014 season...just SUCK IT !!!
Vlad how did you end up today?

And Yacks, those races are insane. I cannot fathom how people are putting out such insane wattage at this time of the year. That said, I'm eager to get racing again soon next year!
Which Vlad?

Both Vladi and I finished this one, but as Yacks' sideways photo indicated there were too many people up the road for it to matter. It was a tough one for sure. From our group, I went for it on the last lap a few times, especially on the penultimate stretch to set up Vladi but to no avail. We were both pretty torched. I rolled in DFL and Vladi cramped so hard during the sprint that he couldn't turn over that cranks. Sick!

This is no BS - as we went through what is now turn 2 on the short course, in front of my very own eyes, I saw the wind blow a grown ass man on a bike over. My reverence for Floyd surges.

I need to throw this out to the veteran Kissena racer bros - @Marc Bertucco‌ , @mugwump‌ , et al. The Triangle guys swept the 123 series. Jose, Jesus, and Sammy. The most remarkable part is that I'm fairly certain that Jose was in the winning move in at least 7 of the 8 races that comprise this series. I raced 6 of them and he was in those winning moves. This included the race with the German pros that won Basking Ridge the next day, the Lupus UCI Masters RR World Champ (and his teammates from GA), and every other one. In my mind, this doesn't happen... ever. Every winning move? I've seen consistent performances out there from talented racers before, but not to this extent. Have you? Does this happen?
I took that photo from the vantage point of my final resting place....my motor may have blown a head gasket but my GoPro captured all the action...

I'm not upset about dopers showing up and winning a "graveyard" series at an old, abandoned runway in October...I'm upset because I got dropped at all 4 races I went to...and that made me feel old. For that, I would like to kick Team Triangle Cyclist right in their junk. There should be a dopers hotline we could call to report "not normal" activity.
Old man Yacks

Vlad, I don't know this Team Triangle at all, difficult for me to speculate. But history has shown, if it swims like a fish, if it smells like a fish...

Yacks, just keep at it. You'll get there. Us older riders have to work a little harder/smarter to get our race fitness up to speed. And as you are selecting events in which to participate to help you reach your goals, it's worth thinking about those events and how they fit into your overall plan.

Racing can be great way to build fitness, but if those races are too far over our current fitness levels, they end up being counter-productive on multiple levels.
