My back and my tummy both went at the same time. The dual tug in opposite directions was quite unpleasant.

Conjures a horrific visual...
HPCX race report.

Day 1: Probably the crappiest race I've had so far. Staged at 36th and was able to slowly move to top 20 near Konrad and Jules which was awesome! I was able to hold it until Jules washed out in front of me on the first or second lap on the routed section before the rideable stairs. (Hope your doing ok) I got freaked out and held back for awhile. Around lap 2 or 3 I got a flat on my rear tubular switched over bikes in the pit and handed over my flatted bike to Sram Neutral Support for a replacement wheel. did half a lap and went back to SNS where I was able to pick up my better bike with a SNS rear wheel. must have lost 10 or more spots during this fiasco. after that I tried to hold my spot  but kept getting passed on the switch back clime area by a few people. I finished 40 something and at least I was able to beat crossresults prediction of 60th place

Day 2: Didn't feel that great in the morning, slept in, achy everything and was bummed about how I did on day 1. But I decided to race anyways even though everything else told me not to. Started in 32nd at the line and was able to pass a few people during the climb. I was able to get my self behind Mike and Joaquin by the time we hit the grass. I was able to hold on until we reached the rideable stair case where everyone was forced to dismount. As I got off my bike my face kindly met with Mike's rear wheel. I was about to lay a sensual kiss upon his tire, but I thought to my self now is no time for such shinanagins. I was still holding on to Mikes and Joaquin's wheels for a good part of the lap. but slowly I was losing them and was getting passed by other riders by the time we got to the 2nd lap. Saw Todd pull out due to a mechanical early in the race. Andy passed me at one point but unfortunately washed out on the same spot as Jules did on day 1. (hope your doing ok Andy) and I caught back up with Joaquin who had old man back issues. I was able to hold on to my position for a good portion of the race until the last lap where I got passed by a few other rider on the paved uphill. Overall a better race where I felt a lot more comfortable taking turns at higher speeds and glad I didnt miss out on it.

Great job to all you KCCX  this was a hard course no doubt. I think I also got a case of the old man back after this weekend.
Can't believe that spot got us both. Nice work Nelson; tres pro to pit twice in one lap!
Quick 4/5 race report

Day 1
Started near the back, wiped out twice, dropped my chain twice and rolled in for 23rd.

Day 2
Started 3rd row and hung near for the front for the first lap. Settled into a group of 5 during the 2nd lap then everything went to hell. I dropped my chain and lost the group, re caught the group about a minute later then ended up crashing and smashing my knee just as I was pulling away from them. DNF :(

I think it's time for me to buy a chain watcher...

Wes are you running a single in the front or double?
1x
Get a narrow wide chainring
Is this one of Myles' laws of something - the worse you do at a race the higher the likelihood that someone takes a good picture?

Not a SINGLE picture from Gloucester and then this?

Jules, we were fucking awesome at Gloucester...I can't believe we got nothing on film. Bummer. We'll just have to do it again in the 3s or Master's, okay?

It's a deal!

Shit...don't put that guy and McLoughlin in a cage together. Their race faces will surely eat each other. #cannotunsee
drops are for sprinting. there was no sprinting happening on that part of the course ;)

JP is just jealous of all of our back pain issues and is doing his best to join #oldmanback club.

you weren't sprinting there?  No wonder you didn't win.

lots of reports of back pain... core work off the bike is probably the key, one thing you can do while racing is changing your position, most of the race we'll be at the hoods, but whenever it makes sense, be a the drops or tops. ala JP.
Bump!

I think I can only race HPCX on Sunday in 2015.  Looking for a ride.

hope you've all been doing your core work.
FWIW I don't think the drops are easier on your back. If anything I suspect it's harder.

find what works for you. because your mileage will vary DRAMATICALLY.

If you'd get better traction and weight balance in the drops (and you should at least some of the time), you should get your back strong enough to do it comfortably.

more importantly: got room in your car? (not for me though: I can't do Saturday)

let us go race bikes.

New course on Sunday. Giddyup!

I'm racing sunday cat 4/5 , it will not be pretty , room for 1 more

Pre-reg closes in less than 12 hours. Right now the numbers look light, so maybe getting a pre-reg call up isn't so important but...

I should plan on getting there no later than 7.30 for a 9am race ?

Yup, that's your minimum. You cannot be too early for a cross race. More time on the course warming up = better race performance.
I am going to agree with Marc here (and thanks Marc for always drilling this into people). I've always been no more than an hour to a race, but last Sunday, at Veteran's Memorial in CT, we got there 2 hours before and wow it made a difference.

No rushing to pin up. Two hot laps before the race, time to talk to people. That's how it should be.
See you at 7 Phil
