Indoor Training, and Virtual Racing (ZWIFT)

Hi!

We'll do a Zwift virtual look sharp again this Friday May 8th 7:30am.

Let me know if you wanna join, you'll need to be following me, and I'll invite you.

Already invited some of the usual suspects, and 6 already confirmed, thanks!!

Planning on 40ish KM, on a fun course, you can go longer or shorter. We'll use the new "Meetup only view" so we'll be the only riders on the virtual course during the meetup.
I've been wanting to join these! but still figuring out a good solution to trainer noise at those earlier hours : (
@eloy - I think we both raced B tonight? How did you do? Holy shit it’s intense. I raced 3.6 w/kg average and still lost leaders with 0.8 miles left and landed 20th. Seriously hard but fun!
I've been running Zwift for about five years now on an Alienware Alpha desktop machine connected to a 40" TV. Over the past two years its gotten slower and slower when updating and logging onto Zwift. Once it's up and running it seems fine but sometimes it takes 30 minutes to start up (argh!). This morning Zwift just wouldn't start at all.

I'm trying to figure out my options. When I get a minute I'm going to uninstall and then reinstall the software just to see if that makes a difference but I fear that won't help since Zwift does frequent updates anyway. Is it possible that this machine is just not powerful enough to efficiently stat up the newest versions? Seems crazy since you can run it on an iPad but maybe that is more a statement on how fast the tech changes.

If reinstalling doesn't help, I'm looking for a new system. (I intend to use the same TV.) DC Rainmaker seems to think the Apple TV is a good option.  It seems like the most cost effective way to go and considering HBO just stopped running on my 7 year old Roku, it's the direction I'm leaning. Anyone have experience with that setup?
When I’m home I run Zwift through my Apple TV. The remote can be a bit of a pain sometimes when trying to accurately scroll, but otherwise it’s been near flawless for me. Sometimes it has trouble connecting to my HRM (I have the same issue when I run off my iPad so I’m inclined to think it’s an issue with the HRM), but otherwise I’ve never had any issues with connections being dropped. The one caveat is you can only connect two devices to the Apple TV at any given time so if you want to connect your HRM, trainer, and a cadence sensor you unfortunately can’t
i run it on my apple tv. It works fine but frequently has trouble pairing with the iphone app.

Wahoo may have just solved your dillema w their new HR strap: https://www.bikeradar.com/news/wahoo-tickr-heart-rate-monitor/

Apparently it has advanced sensors in the strap that can measure cadence based on the riders rocking motion.

Are the days of needing a cadence sensor over??!
yes the days of needing a cadence sensor have been over for a few years. Cadence is built in to most power meters today.

Jim, I run Zwift out of my MacBook, sometimes I run it out of my ipad, on occasion run it out of my iphone. If I was in a similar situation, where my computer couldn't run zwift, apple tv would be my first choice.
Thanks all - confirmed what I suspected. Looks like I'll be doing my part to keep the consumer economy rolling!

@Jim - I concur about the appletv. Note that a new version of the AppleTV is supposed to drop soon.

Fun easy virtual look sharp this morning, thanks everyone for jumping in. Sweet too to be able to ride and have watopia all for ourselves.

@jim_nelson
when I use it(rarely) I use an Ipad with no issues
Those cost more than Apple TV....   =)

KCC Zwift Group Training (Session #1)

We are going to jump right in Tues 5/12 @ 7AM with some SPEED FTP Intervals. The purpose of this training session is to work on those MTB-esque mass Zwift race starts which i'm sure are growing on everyone in different ways. We will focus on getting our bodies ready for these hard starts together.

To participate, add me on Zwift and ill invite you to the meetup.

Here is the Discord link so you can communicate during the ride. I will be broadcasting live (think John Basedow with less hair): https://discord.gg/wrQ8qVf

There will be an extended cool down (30min total) if anyone wants to chat and/or have coffee after virtually.

Its fitness made simple (+Zwift)!

Here are the details for the workout (ref 8 weeks to Zwift Fast - Day 9):

WU:
10-15 minutes warm up, progressing to Zone 2
TARGET: PW Z2/HR Z2/PE 4-5
CADENCE: Self selected with 2 x 1 minute Fast Pedals to wake up legs
-------
MS:
For each interval, start in your VO2Max training level (PW Z5/HR Z5/PE 7-8) from a full stop for 1 minute. Then settle in at Threshold (PW Z4/HR Z4/PE 6-7) for 9 more minutes (for a total of 10). Spin easy for 5-10 minutes between intervals.
Ride all remaining time in your Endurance zone (PW Z2/HR Z2/PE 4-5).
-------
CD:
Cool down 5-15 minutes
TARGET: PW Z1/HR Z1/PE 2-3
CADENCE: small chain ring

Note that you DO NOT have to follow the above workout during the ride. You can load a workout of your choice into Zwift in the holding pen before the ride starts.

See you on the (pixelated) road!
I appreciate the effort @JohnOlsson. Too early for me tho. I'm so used to rolling out of bed and right into work at 9am.
And I'm relegated to early evening workouts. My trainer is too noisy for 7am. :disappointed:
I'll try again next time. maybe by then I won't be a Zwift idiot and will actually join the correct ride...
That was super fun! Tune in next Tues @ 7AM for session #2! Invites will go out sometime this week.

Would anyone have interest in a three to four day stage race simulation on zwift? We would pick a time slot that works for everyone then from there have something like TT, flat race, rolling race and a mountain stage. We can keep track of the spread between the leader and each rider. This could be a cool idea since we have like no stage races in NYC. If any of Y'all are down I would devote some time and research into trying to get this running.
I'm interested in this idea.
I wonder if we could tie this into the L&C and Castelli races? Racing wed- sunday may be tough though lol
We could do a five day stage race and really destroy ourselves
This could be real fun if we do a team competition. It could help level the playing field a bit.
I think I'll be into this.

we could use meetups, but then we need a way to figure out results (maybe Strava segments?)

Alternatively, we could use zwift races, including Castelli & L&C, and lean on those results.

We could ask Charlie if he could help us create an event, but then, assuming he can help us create it, it would likely have to be open to anyone outside of Kissena
I'm into it!

Some ideas here, but I feel like there's gotta be a better way.

had not seen that article, but those are the ways I suggested, either we lean the on schedule races, or we lean on meetups.
Tomorrow May 15 Virtual Look Sharp 7:30am.

Let me know if you wanna join, you'll need to be following me, and I'll invite you.

Already invited some of the usual suspects, some of you already confirmed, thanks!!

Planning on 40ish KM, in a virtual central park with "Meetup only view", like last time, so we'll be the only riders on the virtual course during the meetup.

Remember to wear the "Basic 1" bumblebee jersey, orange cap and orange socks if you can.

I have a 9am meeting so might have to drop off early, but maybe I'll be late to my meeting ;) -- looking forward to it.

I'm back working on Fridays for the moment so can't join - wish I could. Have a nice ride.
