^guys, please file the taxes.
Minutes attached. Thanks!

Hi all,

Below are the general minutes from last week's board meeting. Sorry this took so long; I'm in the middle of a move and work's been crazy. Nothing's been held back, beyond info that's not relevant to all members (who's using which credit card to pay for X - that kind of thing). Let me know if you like the format or have any questions.

Best,

Richard

1. Let’s talk about goals

    • Membership engagement will be the board’s main focus for 2023 – attracting new members and retaining current ones.

    • What does this mean for you? More club rides and team events, more frequent communication, and partnering further with Hilltop.

    • Alex and Patrick are also working on initiatives that will help attract new Kissena members.

    2. Kit Orders

      • Let’s get that fresh kit! There’s a team kit order up right now – so get prepped for the months ahead.

      • We’ll work on establishing a quarterly cadence.

      3. Membership Dues

        • They’re coming up! Dues will be $150. Keep a lookout in your Email.

        4. End of Year Party

          • Unfortunately, the end of year 2022 party was canceled.  Covid surge made the gathering a bit risky and there was low registration as a result.

          5. Hey, Pumpkin-heads!

            • We’re looking into a new helmet order, but it’s complicated. Orange isn’t a widely available color and Hilltop doesn’t sell Kask.  Patrick’s exploring alternative options – including aligning with another shop just for helmets.

Hey guys, this year is the 60th anniversary of Kissena.
Still enough time to organize something for this fall...
Are there any plans for rescheduling the 2022 end of year party? I paid for 2 tickets, perhaps we can rebrand it for a 60th anniversary party :D
The board is going to discuss during our next mtg some options to help celebrate this milestone for the club! We will also ensure that you get refunded for the party that didn't happen last year. Stay tuned!

I may be able to dig out some very old membership rosters from days gone. Ping me.

            Hi all,

The board met this Monday, May 1. Check out the summary below to catch up on the latest news and updates coming to KCC:

            ###

            Put the train in training

            • Get your Metro North tickets ready! Stephen is looking to schedule a few rides from CT to NYC. Keep your eyes peeled on the forum and slack for dates and details.

            Chip off the ol’ fork

            • In case you missed it, Tom Mains is offering 31% off of timing chips for Kissena members registering to race via BikeReg. That brings the price down from $75 to $51.50. Use the code “KissenaTimingChip” to qualify. Having issues? Reach out to Tom Mains via slack or the forum for assistance.

New supplier for cycling kit. No, we’re not kitting you.

            • Based on a recent kit survey, and a quality test between potential suppliers, we will transition from Champ Sys to Le Col.

              • Le Col offers several advantages:

                • We have a great POC: Charlie Issendorf, former Kissena member and pro-racer, is their national head of sales.

                • Made in Italy: Le Col kit is a high quality but reasonably priced product.

                • Well established: Le Col sponsors a large number of teams, including BORA-hansgrohe, and have excellent customer support.

            • This decision was made by a unanimous vote among board members (with one member absent).

            • We will likely have one last order from Champ Sys this year, so members can stock up on their favorite items.

            • The transition to Le Col will take a few months. There will likely be some back and forth on design to make sure the look of our kit is consistent and on brand.

            • It’s our goal to have our first Le Col order ready by the end of summer - just in time for CX season (or general fall road riding).

            • We’ll keep you in the loop as we get closer to our first Le Col order.

            New friends

            • We have a couple new members who will be introducing themselves on the forum. Be sure to say hello and help make them feel welcome.

            Let’s get social

            • With the weather improving, we’ll look to have more informal social gatherings: post-ride pizza, happy hours, pro-race viewings and more. Stay tuned for details.

Really exciting to hear about the new kit supplier - Le Col products seem really nice. Couple of questions on them:

            - Does this potentially includes new designs?
            - I notice on the custom kit products section of their website that they don't have caps or socks listed (link), would we be dropping those?
            @GrantSeltzer

Does this potentially includes new designs?
For the first order, no.  We want to make the transition as quick and seamless as possible, so we want to keep the same design as we are currently using.

I can't speak to your second question, but we can pass it along to Charlie (our rep).
How is the sizing? I find that for EU clothing I have to size up....
@AndrewJohnson given the clothing is made in the UK, I would bet you might have to size up as well. As we prep the clothing order, I’m sure they’ll provide a sizing chart for reference
Ideally we can try some samples, and take a peek at their sizing guide... I have one pair of Le Col bibs and most definitely needed to size down from Champion.

I'll express some real concern about the prices, which are hardcore premium, the lowest priced lecol bibs are $190 (vs $75 for CS), the LeCol vest with pockets is WTF $195!!! (vs $68 at CS) the one ugly le-col neckless skinsuit is priced at over $500!!!

Do we have a le col price sheet?
Thanks for your comments @eloy!  A couple thoughts here:
            1. Just because we are testing out Le Col does not mean we cannot place orders with ChampSys in the future. We still have an account open with them and they still have our art. Placing a once a year order with them is something we have discussed as a board. We just need to be mindful of the minimum order quantities so can't have orders open with multiple stores all the time.
            2. In the survey we sent out to members, 94% of members said quality was the single most important aspect when considering purchases. Second most important was a tie between price and Broad selection of options. Additionally, when reviewing many of the ChampSys orders in the past, a large majority of folks were not purchasing the cheapest items from Champ Sys. They were almost always upgrading to the more premium lines which cost more than you mentioned.
            3. Im not sure where you got your prices from but I am attaching the pricing guide for 2023 custom orders. On top of this, KCC will get a 10% discount on the entire order. As you can see, the offer a wide variety.
Hopefully this addresses some of your concerns.  I want to reiterate, trying a new clothing vendor is a reversible decision. What we don't want to do is blindly keep things the way they are because we've been doing it for X years. Making sure we evaluate all our options, beyond just clothing, is important to the clubs health and ensuring we stay current and have healthy membership. I want to thank the entire board for all their help evaluating our options for clothing vendors. A LOT of work was done to ensure we give members the best experience and address concerns we believe would come up.  Let us know if you have any further questions!

Thanks, @StephenAschkenes appreciate the response and price list.
Kit is always a very thankless task; be it collating orders, uploading a new design - heaven forbid; redoing the whole thing. Getting it right is wonderful, and everything that leads to that is more or less horrible.

Anyone actively working on this deserves extra time out of the wind.
Thank you, Stephen, Grant, and the board.

I do love the design rigor of Le Col, and the reconnection with Kissena legend Charlie Issendorf. That said I'm disappointed that we're going with a company that has no stated commitments to sustainable practices or goals (am I missing information?). Could we let them know that this is a priority for the club?

Here's two lower impact alternatives to consider:
            https://www.pactimo.com/pages/colorado-cycling-clothing
            https://isadore.com/custom
            https://directory.goodonyou.eco/brand/isadore-apparel

Check your summer (heatwave) plans: 60 percent chance that El Niño will form between May and July, and an 80 percent chance it will form between July and September.

            Hey folks,

I wanted to share some ideas i've had to help grow the club. The size of the roster is pretty small, and from I understand at it's smallest size in quite some time. I've been riding with different clubs/groups since moving to Greenwich and there's some key things those clubs/stores have done that I think we should emulate.

            - Our recruitment strategy is a bit dated and unapproachable. We could make our Strava group public, and have our weekly weekend rides pre-planned with a downloadable route. Write the time and meeting place. That way people could just show up for a ride without asking permission first via an email.

            - Complementary to this idea, we could say that you have to join the club (i.e. pay membership dues) in order to buy Kissena kit.

            - I'm not sure how our budget is laid out. It'd be great to have visibility into this. There's potentially ways we can improve the club experience and recruiting depending on what our current revenue stream is. If it's membership, perhaps we could get rid of that and instead add a small markup on kit to supplement it? or to races? This would incentive us to recruit more.

            - If I understand correctly, the races in Prospect Park (both series) are technically put on by Kissena and Tom is contracted out in order to run them (please correct me if wrong). If that's the case could we name the races something like "Kissena Crit P/B Castelli"? This would be a great way to get better exposure.

            - The best marketing aspect that Kissena has is that we're the longest running club in Brooklyn. We should lean into the appeal of being part of a great tradition. We should have history information on our website and maybe come up with a tagline for the club to have on website/jerseys playing into that.

            - Open board meetings (I assume they're on zoom?)
Thanks for sharing that @GrantSeltzer. I appreciate the thoughtfulness.

We have a board meeting tomorrow, so your timing is great.  We've briefly talked about some of these topics, but I'll add everything to the agenda so it won't be forgotten.
Yes, thanks for sharing. The club is run by volunteer energy and ideas and assistance are welcome
