Now that looks more like it!
Wow guys that sounds horrible. Rockaways looks amazing though. Shame it's not more straightforward to get to.
Can also recommend FBF...good for workouts and little danger of being near anyone other than some guys trying to film a Brooklyn version of the fast and the furious....
FBF solo always seemed to me to be the equivalent of Hinault riding no hands throughout the winter. A legend applicable only to the most committed maniacs, promising either great form, madness or perhaps both.

Once I drove out there with two left bike shoes. Did my intervals in one left sneaker...

I remember going to FBF on weekends when I wanted to switch it up, also down to Breezy Point.  Always little traffic and hopefully the same these days.  perhaps its an alternative for y'all.

In SF, they've closed car access the to the beaches and just closed the Great Highway in both directions (~2 miles).  people are getting out to and properly distancing.  They aren't ticketing the surfers like they are in SoCal because no one goes to Ocean Beach to lounge ...  it only breaks 70F there four times a year and the other 361 days make sure wear a jacket and long pants ... so social distancing has been a forever way of life on the beach here.

I'm still managing to get out on my bike as the roads pretty much have the traffic associated with Thanksgiving / Christmas day.  Any bicycle pathway though is packed so I'm avoiding any riding in the park or dedicated cycling / running routes.   I rode Mission Street from Daly City to Downtown a couple days ago as it was just empty.  In normal days I'd be roadkill on that street.  Hopefully y'all can find situations like that in NYC during these times.

I found it almost meditative due to the repetitiveness of the scenery.
I was in Central Park yesterday.  Crowd was pretty light overall.

The thing that got me was I saw a guy who probably had just finished a run.  He had taken his shirt off and was wearing a film of sweat.  No reason to argue with a guy as you're shooting past him, but I felt I could almost see the little virus cells leaping off the guy.

On a more serious note, it appears that the kids in my building (that my kids play with) might have had Covid-19 and have recovered.  Their parents seemed to have had it, too, but obviously, no testing.  And they think they had it because the dad's mother has been sick for two weeks--her cleaning person tested positive for Covid-19.  So, now the question, do they still need to social distance?  Are they a risk to others?  If the answer to both is no, it could be a ticket to a little sanity.  Of course, the downstairs kids are big huggers, so there's that.
JP, I think the question of "recovery" is what is the timeframe since they last had symptoms and whether they can get a antibody test to determine whether or not they did in fact have it and now have the protective antibodies.

Here are the recommendations from the CDC website.

How to discontinue home isolation

People with COVID-19 who have stayed home (home isolated) can stop home isolation under the following conditions:

  • If you will not have a test to determine if you are still contagious, you can leave home after these three things have happened:
    • You have had no fever for at least 72 hours (that is three full days of no fever without the use medicine that reduces fevers)
      AND
    • other symptoms have improved (for example, when your cough or shortness of breath have improved)
      AND
    • at least 7 days have passed since your symptoms first appeared
  • If you will be tested to determine if you are still contagious, you can leave home after these three things have happened:
    • You no longer have a fever (without the use medicine that reduces fevers)
      AND
    • other symptoms have improved (for example, when your cough or shortness of breath have improved)
      AND
    • you received two negative tests in a row, 24 hours apart. Your doctor will follow CDC guidelines.

These are the BARE MINIMUM in terms of getting back after recovery, since this is based upon the most common scenarios and since this virus is good at asymptomatic transmission it would be better to give it longer after recovery to rejoin society.
As Dan points, if they had the virus, then yeas, they should generally be able to mingle, but how long to wait before doing so, and how long it can be in the surfaces they touched, etc, still up for debate. Common sense suggests to keep social distance for much longer that you'd like, specially if they can't be tested.
One of the under-reported confounding factors is that this has been a regular "normal" flu season, and the flu variant that is going around is pretty bad. Lots of anecdotes about people who were "sick" for a couple of weeks (my brother-in-law included) but without a test you really just don't know what it was.

Until there is a reliable test for immunity I think we all just have to live as if everyone else has it and we don't.

sucks

New York City Closes Schools for Academic Year

This is how our Union chapter leader told us on FB

Thats how my 8 year old wrote “schools over” at the end of our “day whiteboard”

🤣
Well, Stony Brook University, where I work, has had the Army Core of Engineers working 24/7 to build tent hospital on the athletic fields. A view from last week:

As of yesterday when I rode by, it looks like they were getting the HVAC units all installed..

@Jules same reason why Grand Tours and hand sanitizer are best friends. Going that deep for that many days in a row just creates a hot bed for illness
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday the order closing non-essential businesses – New York PAUSE – has been extended through May 15.
Anybody interested in a zoom social hour? Thursday nights at 9pm sound good? BYO-moonshine
Might be reading the kids version of the Trevor Noah story "Born a Crime" out loud by then.

Are you thinking East Coast or North Coast time?

I was thinking east coast but we could definitely push it back an hour for those with older kids.
I assume kit helmet and glasses, cause, I mean, how else we gonna recognize each other
I split the difference. 9:30pm eastern time. Bring a drink, wear a helmet ;)

That was fun. We should do this every week.  On a sadder note, it was my son's birthday today.

We just learned that the nurse that helped deliver him died today of COVID.
Sad news, check this link

I'm so sorry Jules. At least I got to see you and a cameo from LR!

Sad end to an otherwise lively evening. It's likely we'll all known somebody who doesn't survive this before it's over. Thanks for the link @Mark Taylor

@Jules thanks for putting that together, was good to get out for a while. Also very cool to find someone who had a smilier experience growing up. Looking forward to more of these... I'm sorry to hear about the bad news.
