Social Distancing Solo Saturdays and Sundays

@eloy @mugwump

would love to do that ride Ho-Ho-Kus ride - I think you mentioned it here last summer, as well - and the Wawayanda one looks awesome. i've been in MI for a month and am itching to find some real elevation when i get back to NY. while it's very flat here, it is possible to do 50+ miles of gravel roads with almost zero miles of pavement = almost zero cars.

You might not recall this, but years and years ago, we rode from Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ out to Warwick and back, taking in Skyline, Old Westbrook, going by the Bubblecross course, then Upper Greenwood lake, going by Westwood cross, then back over Mount Peter, Sterling Forest, through Harriman up past Lake Welch, and then to Ho-Ho-Kus again.

Love to take a group on that ride someday.

(btw, Waywayanda was the site of the first-ever NJ State MTB Championship in 1987)
totally remember, might have been in december even, we drove your car, cliche: our bikes were more valuable than the car 🚗;)

I remember some awesome climbs and totally would love to do again!

Can’t remember the last time I rode to the orchards solo
solid day , disappointed to look at the wahoo and see 99 miles , the mini peach pie was so good
Last Saturday went back to Bucks and Hunterdon counties playing and riding around the Delaware river border between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This time brought Jess, so a bit mellower route, but still totally awesome, even a 18% moment in Kingwood Stockon Road. There was an unexpected fresh rocky gravel around kilometer 50, but otherwise would mega recommend this route for a chill (or hard) day out. River Road in PA is just gorgeous with beautiful historic houses from 1740ish!

Gorgs weathers, great route, good company. Later we grabbed a sweet totally socially distanced lunch in Frenchtown, NJ. Still missed you.

Made my way out to Suffern yesterday, going in what is typically a backwards direction.  Funny how 500' less of climbing made the ride feel really flat.

This could also be ported over into the "Road Conditions" thread but went on a ride slightly upstate with a college friend. Started at Van Cortlandt Park and rode northeast along the Bronx River, skirted around Chappaqua, and finshed up headed south through Rockies and along the Hudson through Tarrytown. I wouldn't take the route that we did again (Komoot did some weirdness) but I would absolutely ride along the cleared out Bronx River Expressway on a Sunday again:

Apparently this is an every Sunday occurrence and it was awesome.

(I was not maxing out my heartrate in the photo, my Wahoo just got very upset that I wasn't explicitly following the planned route)
@Nathaniel Picard Busky

Actually, it's most sundays (save holiday weekends) between the first Sunday in May and the last Sunday in October.  It's from 10am-2pm.  I did it a few weeks back and rode from White Plains to Ossining before heading home.

because it's been happening since 1974.
So maybe the TDF is making me miss competition or something. I wanted to propose (let’s see if you like the idea) of a “solo” competition among Kissenas.

My thought is:
* Through month of October to upload times in picked Strava segments.
* All segments have to be completed in the same ride.

I have segments in mind such as Great Wall of China, River Road Circle to Ranger Station, Bradley Tweed Eastbound - Hilltop Finish and State Line Hill 9w.

What do you guys think? Anyone fancy an excuse to do a solo spirited ride?
@mugwump I was completely unaware, what an awesome thing!!

@DiegoSanchez That could be very cool, as long as we can link the chosen segments safely I'm quite into it.

Indeed.  Immediately after I rode it a few weeks back, I returned to Bronxville to find a different way back to create a ride for my website that's a 39-mile loop from Harlem incorporating the BRP as the centerpiece.
sometimes feel like we are one of the few local teams not doing group rides ,ride ya bikes have been out since may
not saying we should

I saw the Samba guys on my way home from the Manhattan Bridge on Sunday and I swear it was bigger than any Kissena group ride we’ve ever had.
My octogenarian mom has commented that the other women have clearly been visiting the colorists while she has gone completely white. I told her it was a badge symbolizing the wisdom of her choices.

The real question is "would you really want to ride with a group that's been riding together since May?"
I rolled out after noon today.  And wormholed it the whole way.

With the exception of crossing back into NYC on the GWB, it was extraordinarily quiet on the roads and in the towns.  The number of people and cars I saw out felt more like a November Sunday.  Almost eerie.

Another Sunday, another ride variation.  This time, took the Kissena traditional and added some roads out in New City.

Caught up with Diego on the GWB. Seems like he's already setting up his FTP levels for the fall and winter.

I've been heading out to Cold Spring Harbor on Rte 25a (sometimes known as Northern Boulevard) and throwing in a short local climb at the end called Snake Hill Road. It's a straight shot from my block and passes through some business districts, but eventually gives way to small towns and farm stands as it goes further out east towards the North Fork. It has been extremely quiet with minimal car traffic early weekend mornings, though by the time I get back home around 9am, the Queens portion of it starts to get busier - nothing even close to the level of fudgery winding through Brooklyn after club rides.

There are hills, some of them hitting 11%, but don't last for more than a minute or two of climbing. I've seen other riders, mostly solo and in clusters of 2 to 4 mostly in non-club kit so it's definitely not a popular route (or time of day?) for the Triangle riders crowd which, for covid paranoid me, makes it all the more attractive.

If I can wake up and head out of the door early enough, I'm planning on getting to Sunken Meadow state park to hit the beach next weekend...

One of the more interesting things I've forgotten how to do: Eating while riding. Considering the rides are only about 1hr each direction I've been able to take a pause midway and eat a few discs of stroopwafels which are so, so much better than the Clif bars and blocks I've tried to stuff in my face during the ride itself.
@David Yang clocking some miles makes me happy. As do the photos.
Snake Hill Road is so cool! You never expect to find a genuine switchback on Long Island.
@RobertMullen seriously! The service road has construction so you have to ride through some pedestrian friendly fences and gravely bits right now getting to it from town.

I gave it a genuine try on Sunday and am off by nearly 40 seconds from the Strava record, something to work on for next time!
I love Snake Hill Road. It's super fun on a motorcycle too.
Hey guys - I'm thinking about riding to the orchards this weekend. If anyone has suggestions for a non-9W-heavy route, or would want to join, let me know!
@JonathanAdler

I took this the other week, I'm sure JP has something better

Does midweek count? Crisp fall air smells like CX season.

@mugwump
The infamous Ho Ho Kus loop we keep mentioning... is there a strava or ridewithgps for it? I wanna go ride bikes.
@JonathanAdler

 I like this Orchards route. It has very little 9W. bonus you get a full 100 miles out of BK: https://www.strava.com/activities/3462524322

I've been wondering about that Ho Ho Kus route, too!

Also considering Harriman.
@JonathanAdler

Hey, I've been putting up some long-distance Jersey rides on my WTBNYC website.  I still need people to test out the site and the rides.  I have it set up so people can download a gpx file for their computer and a turn sheet so they know what they're facing.

Here's a ride that includes River Road and about 10 miles of gravel (I used to do it on 20mm road tires, so it's fine for road bikes)  it's 64 miles from the GWB.  And it's not out and back at all.

If you choose to download the ride, I'll refund as soon as I find out.  Just let me know.  (haven't mastered coupons yet)

Ho-Ho-Kus loop.  I did it last August I think for those combing my strava files.  It is awesome.
