A few Kissena riders have done it. Not counting Red Hook royalty: Dave Trimble, Dan Chabanov, Neil Bezdek, and Al Barouh, who where all our kissena teammates in the 2000s.
To give you a sense of the kind of goal we are talking about:
Today you are a Cat 5, to be at the level required to qualify, by March 2018 you would have to be winning Cat 1 races. Good luck.

Ha just thought it might be fun to participate in one of the heats. but I suppose you are right, may not be any point given the caliber of racers that get involved these days. That being said, I think it's different for woman. The entire formula femme team qualified for the finals this year. oh and in other news....I cashed in my CAT 5 chips earlier this week and am now CAT 4.

The range of the RHC women's field is a little bit wider.
The quality required to be in the top 20~30 women is the same than the men.
Colleen Gulick, who won Saturday, is a well known Cat 1 crit and track rider.

while she only has done one of these crits, last year in london. No one has dominated these races in such commanding fashion.

The Velonews article said Trimble didn't have enough sponsor money, since Rockstar games had a contract that ended last year.
I'm assuming part of the huge cost would be insurance, but it seems it may have gotten too big for its britches.
In the IT world, this is Software Development Lifecycle. It's created, it gets updated, it gets put to bed. That's all fine for software, but disturbing for what was arguably the most popular fixed gear race in the US, especially considering this was not sanctioned by the USAC and bragging rights (and a free frame) were the only prizes.
I'm conflicted because on the one hand, Flash in the Pan, which is exciting while it lasts and then you move on - it's the stuff poetry is made from, trying to capture that fleeting thing. But on the other, this is bike racing, something we as Teammates all attempt to promote and continue especially as our numbers dwindle across the country, so I'm disappointed it won't happen this year.
I think it's irresponsible, really. It started as a race on the open road where volunteers physically put their hand up to stop the 61 bus so racers could cross, and then it just became a monster of a spectacle, with film production crews, food trucks, barriers and huge crowds. From passion to money to no money.
So kudos and a shout out to Charlie I for his Park Races, and all the others continuing their races year after year. They do it super early in the morning, there are no crowds or food trucks, there is no flash or Twitter trending, but there is a race, there are teams, there are people in kit who are fit and look great, year after year.

Port Authority keep raising the fee to use the Red Hook terminal. It duplicated it every year.

I’m super conflicted; I think the mega pr and awesome event - I mean, what a fucking scene - were always at odds with the non Usac-ness of it all (and lord knows I’m not a usac fanboy) and the “what is this, thunder dome?!” Thing.
