thanks, thinking about Garmin 310XT, its a watch w/HR and capacity for foot &cycle...seems to be a Tri-Athelete's tool..but i like idea of small&portable? also captures 'ANT' sync data/info download for PC&MAC...is this a reasonable choice or too expensive @$400+?

@ Harry. Being able to train with specificity will offer up the most improvement. As such, there's no question, if you can afford a power meter (which includes HR monitoring capabilities, as they all do), that is the way to go. But, that's an enormous expense. The question then becomes what kind of training can be done with a heart rate monitor alone.

One pattern that always emerges with cyclists new to racing is that they see pretty exponential gains in improvement and results as they simply ride their bike more and in the context of racing where they are are exposed to new kinds of stressors. Then there may be a plateau. That's where good specific training plans and tools can keep the rider improving.

A basic HR monitor is still a great tool...because good training is ultimately about good stress and recovery and the HR monitor gives you an insight as to what's going on with your body. So if you can't afford a power meter, I say go with a HR monitor, even a basic $60 one that just gives you a readout and a stop watch that will allow you to do intervals. If you can afford one that allows you to record a workout, even better.

@ marcB, much appreciated...i will look into a reasonable HR monitor as it has been suggested that monitoring my stresses may assist in improving my climbing and sprint weaknesses. i will wait on the powermeter..a bit out of my league at moment &i'll take one aspect at a time...have enjoyed my little pink cateye time/speed/distance...there is a polkDot version that i covet...but will not consider untill i am a better climber.

along those lines does anyone have a used Strada CATEYE V3 WIRELESS CYCLE COMPUTER W/HR($180 new @ NASHBAR) or similar? love to buy or try it for baseline measurements in next couple weeks.

I assume ou know that you can pick up PT wheels directly from Cycleops. They build them up on house rims, which I am pretty sure are Velocity A23s. I like them a lot. They are 32 laced which is solid and great for training - but not uber aero or light for racing. I picked up a pair early this season and I think I got mine in about a week. Also, if you are looking for super race wheels, they announced that they will start selling PT wheels built with ENVE rims soon. If we still get our 45% discount on those it will be a sweet deal.

About the new PT and the ENVE wheels: at GMSR I talked to the Saris/PT guy in charge of the area set up with trainers for warming up before the TT. He showed me an ENVE wheel with the new PT. Looked nice (black, smaller). He told me they would have a hard time providing the customers who were pre-ordering and that we would certainly not get the new PT at sponsored prices this year.

Probably for the better... let them work out the kinks of the new system this year and then hope we can get them at sponsored prices next year.

I saw the new G3 hub at InterBike. pretty cool design, pretty light. It is supposed to weigh in at 325g, which is pretty much the light end of non-specialty ultralight rear hubs these days. The electronics are no longer in the hub body but in the end cap, which makes it much easier to service. In terms of servicing, for many they will no longer need to send wheels back to Saris for repair, rather just unscrew the cap and send it in. This will probably result in big savings to Saris, as the shipping of wheels is expensive and bulky.

All the same, Mike is right that the initial run of a new design is likely to have some kinks and the gamma testers will pay for their cutting edge tastes. On the plus side, so long as the torque tube has been done right, many of the problems will be solved by firmware upgrades or sending in the cap.

She wants a tandem bike for her and her significant other....they rode around in Paris on one and now they think it's "fun". Which I'm sure it is. But like many novelty purchases, I have a feeling this will collect dust after 3-4 rides.

Anyway, I know very little about them. Any suggestions on manufacturers or places to look/purchase are appreciated. No, they're not going to enter the CX tandem race at staten or do any mtn biking (although i would love to try that). This is just for putting around brooklyn.

I don't know much about tandems. BUT, I think it would go faster if it had Zipp 404 wheels. See if there is a carbon one. Remember, saving weight is a good way to go faster. Can get lighter tyres, wheels, components and passengers to this end.

On a marginally more serious (not sure tandems are serious) note. Dawes make a formidable touring bike, the famous Galaxy. It is world famous for being a great, great bike. It has been considered the 'gold standard' of touring bikes for 30 years or something. It's one of those bikes which even if you had one from 1985, as long as it's in good condition, is still sought after. Anyway, they make a tandem version:

I point this out because using a tandem to get around Brooklyn is just plain stupid. Sorry mate. However, it would be an excellent way to do cycle touring. I have considered it myself. Apparently, cycle touring is most efficient on a tandem (more power versus resistance [wind and rolling] per person than two individual bikes).
