@Jules, I don't understand how the side of the bike factors ? Dunno about you but I always find it much more straightforward to change a tube if I take the wheel out of the bike first.

Hi all- I'm selling a pair of wheels. They were lightly used this season- mostly on the indoor trainer in the spring months.

Well, 4 weeks into commuting to work (never rode in before, not really sure why) my Specialized RockHopper which my brother got me for Christmas in 2004 was stolen, on 8th Ave at the corner of 17th St right in the heart of Chelsea.
I clean and regrease my rode bikes at least once a week, buy new parts, work on them constantly. I never touched the RH. It had original everything, squeaked from every moving part, must have weighed at least 30 pounds with the rack and two baskets.
I've read many posts here about other bikes getting stolen and now I know how you feel. It sucks pretty bad. RIP Bertha, you were my first adult love.

Do you have apartment insurance? If so, it likely covers the theft and you can get something better.
Definitely an ugly sinking feeling. I had it this morning in our communal bike room when I thought the front wheel of my 'cross bike had been stolen. Took me a moment to realize I had used it to prop up the rear triangle of the bike while I was fixing a flat upstairs. Whew! I locked up all my spare wheels forthwith.

Thanks for the kind words. No insurance so it's all out of pocket, and yes, Jules, I think you're right. It was a good, solid bike but not great for commuting. Now I just need to figure out what I'm comfortable spending for a commuter that may get stolen again.

I'm in looking for a Cyclocross bike. Ideally something under $1000 but competitive. Durability is also a factor. My new bike justification = sparing my road bike, which has doubled as a used/abused commute bike for over a year now. I'm probably a 48 or 50 if the geometry is right (51cm top tube is my max).
I was at Brooklyn Ride the other day, thinking that a CAADX Sora would be good, but was kinda thrown for a loop. I thought Kissena got a 40% discount on 2014 Cannondales, but was told I'd only get a 20% discount. On top of that unforeseen additional expense, the sales guy was pushing the Tiagra upgrade pretty hard. Disc brakes, BB30. Difficult to argue against it being a much better ride, but... with only a 20% discount and the added expense, it's really hard to justify the cost. (The price difference = new shoes, cleats, peddles, saddle, and the narrower handlebars I undoubtedly need to add.)
Just curious if a) that 20% discount is correct; b) anyone has any better bikes/ideas out there; and c) I'd be foolish for going with the Sora?

Erika, I have a bike with 2011 Sora on it. Two things to consider:
(1) Ability to shift in the drops. If they are offering you the Sora I have, do not buy a racing bike equipped with it if you need to shift from the drops. The black plastic shifters tabs actuated by your thumb to shift into a smaller rear gear and a smaller front gear cannot be reached from the drops: you cannot sprint with the bike. I've never done cross, so I'm not sure if this matters as much in cross.
If they are the new ones, http://www.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/products/road/sora/product.-code-ST-3500.-type-.st_road.html, that you can shift in either direction using the index finger, then nevermind.
(2) Shifting under load: my Sora does not. Could be that I have the long-cage variety. Also maybe they improved it since my model year (2011?). But buying a bike with Sora, finding it inadequate, then realizing it would cost huge amounts of money to upgrade the drivetrain, is one of the main reasons I bought my CAAD10.

If Craig's saddle doesn't fit your backside, you may want to consider checking out the Take-off Saddle box at Ride Brooklyn.
