What a race. Amazing how a guy can transition from ski jumper to Grand Tour top 3 and have the press say he "lost."

judging by his LBL ride, they might need to hope for someone else.

I should have placed on bet on Thomas crashing 'out' of the GC. He is one of those riders who seems to have a far greater than average number of crashes (especially when in great form and up for a win). This is second Giro for this to happen, he got blown into a ditch in Ghent-Wevelgem, slid out of the lead group at Flanders, rode off the side of the road in a tour, etc.

He is like the modern incarnation of Alex Zulle.

Chad Haga responded to a tweet by Inrng that the peloton had just gone over an intersection with lots of flagstones which is why you see a half dozen bottles shooting about on the video. You can see that G’s front wheel hit a Bahrain bottle and he went down hard immediately. This was not a bike handling issue. 

I feel for G, he looked like he was going to make good on focusing on the giro. Interestingly, I heard in a podcast the other day that world tour water bottles need to meet a specific standard so that when they are run over, the cap pops off. That seems to be why so many teams use the same tacx or elite bottles. I imagine it is still pretty jarring to hit one of those bad boys at speed.

Which podast?

It was mentioned on the Trainer Road podcast (I think the most recent ep?). Someone asked why most road cyclists use small 20oz water bottles when triathletes use much larger ones. The host Amber mentioned that pros use smaller ones because they can always get a bottle from the team car but are also limited by race org rules. They noted that thats why some of those Tacx/Elite bottles can feel kinda flimsy/flexible. I think the idea is they'll bust open full or empty.

Thanks Im a fan of that podcast but hadnt heard the explodey-bottle idea. I remember stage 1 of the kmsr and some kid lost a bottle on the big descent right in front of me - so much terror

@RobertMullen @Jules this article sheds some light on the bottle cap popping off idea. Cancellara pushed to make that a rule for bottles after he was taken out by one at the 2012 Tour of Flanders, but his proposal never got anywhere.

The exploding bottle is not a new idea. All bidons used to have push on caps (i am not sure they had developed the technology to cut threads into plastic).

I am not sure when they changed to screw on tops, but I remember riding with them (in fact in my avatar i still have one).

And as that cyclingtips article says - metal cages that can be bent by hand to secure the bottle more tightly.

Finally, I am not sure when the UCI allowed bottle feeds from the side of the road, but this is clearly a bad idea. I saw bottles dropped during the snatch with alarming regularity during the Tour and now the Giro. They should revert to having a bottle in the musette available during the official feed and the domestiques can return to their role as watercarriers.

I'm happy for Dowsett today! His online content helps humanize pro cycling and he seems like a good dude. 

Sadly, it'll probably overshadowed by Yates' positive COVID test. It seems like the Giro isn't really doing much about it besides rapidly testing everyone on the team (who somehow all came back with negatives). Regardless, somehow, COVID is in the peloton.

Agree with the Dowsett win , props to his team mate he mentioned afterwards that he was all in for Alex because he didn’t have a contract for next year

It's easy to get jaded watching the big guns fight for podium spots. I love it when we get reminded how hard that top step is to get on, even for the people who make their living racing bikes in the World Tour.

Mitchelton Scott and Jumbo Visma pulled their entire teams after positive tests, and staff members on Ineos and AG2R tested positive as well. Curious to know if the organizers are going to keep pushing ahead/what other teams are going to do

Noises coming out of JV is that the "bubbles" the teams are in aren't particularly secure...Sharing hotels between 4 teams, moto riders, shimano support team, general public...

It's insane how inept the UCI is when it comes to enforcing it's own rules that aren't absurd (I'm looking at you sock length rule)
