Awesome Patrick! I have to go watch breaking away now.
Patrick: please repost in the "Awesome!" thread. That is NOT a Fred photo.
WDC: awsome is my middle name. But apparently so is Fred. I've gotta find the pic of me with my XXL yellow Bell helmet with a Donald Duck sticker on it. No lie

so gross
Here I am before the 1993 Iditasport race. Cannondale panniers, pogies, double-wide rims and 2.2 tires, 40-tooth big ring. That\'s a sleeping bag for water taped to my downtube and the seat tube bottle mount has cooking fuel. Hidden behind the Pearl Izumi jacket is a CamelBak which leaked into the jacket much of the race. Hard to see are the hiking boots, the knee-high gaiters and the purple and yellow knee panels of the Pearl tights. Helmets weren't mandatory and I don't anyone wore one. Notice the bottle cage on the ground. Couldn't work the cage and the bottle insulation together.
Omg so awesome.

The gaiters and matching pogies are what do it for me.
JP:

Is the bike sporting double wide rims with studded tires?
charlie,
Yes, double-wide rims. Custom-made by a guy in fairbanks. He started with two rims, took off the inside walls and then welded the rims together. I ordered them as rims and then built them up myself. Used strapping tape for rim strips, as per his recommendation. The tires were not studded, just extra-wide Fisher tires. The studs weren't really necessary. I rode the bike around Anchorage for a week before the race. It was really stable on most ice. In fact, the race started and finished on a frozen lake. Start at a small house at one end, ride across on a plowed strip, and hit the trails.
JP,

How long was this race? Looks epic
@ JP Where the tires double wide as well?
John,
It was supposed to be 200 miles. But this was before GPS mapping, and it was run on a combination of frozen lakes, frozen rivers, and trails. Took me just shy of 31 hours. Epic, yes. Experiencing an angry moose mother at 3am is something I don't want to go through again.

Dan,
THey were similar to the C2 wide rim concept Hed is pushing these days. With the double-wide rims the 2.1 or 2.2 Fisher Fattrax tires had a much wider print.
.
Just can't resist...

Yacks has been shooting music videos (with gelled hair and cigarettes too!) during his free time. "everywhere you go, it's 'le velo'"

MS 150 from Minneapolis to Duluth, circa 2002
Jersey from Mountain Equipment Coop (it\\\'s a Canuck thing) mid 90\\\'s
Oh the shame of it...
MEC!!!!

I actually dig their stuff - my wife is Canadian, and for Christmas her folks have given me a bunch of Fredilicious armwarmers and baselayers that nevertheless get the job done on those 30 degree (F) rides.

Looking good, Jules - you could be rocking a Metalica Master of Puppets or No Fear jersey, so...
Patrick got the Mohawk and the cigarette correct...but in 1990 my musical taste was comprised of an eclectic mix of Janes Addcition, The Cult and REM.
^ this photo makes a triumphant return
Oh man - I may regret this.

I came across these and just knew this thread had to be revived. This is me on a recreational ride in Colorado in 2008. The jersey is one my dad and his dorky brothers had made just for this Fredly occasion "JBros" is for "Johnston Brothers."

This was me at about 155 lbs and three weeks off of a pack-a-day+ of Marlboro mediums.
Epic bandana, bro. But seriously, super sweet bar tape! Can we still get it?
