Time to schedule the annual training talk.

Training. What is it, how do you do it, will it make you a better person?

We traditionally have a training talk at the start of December every year. Everyone in Kissena is welcome to come. We go over the basics of not only how to set up a training plan, but how to train, why train, and more. Not only will there be a talk, but you'll leave with a printed training guide that can function as a reference manual.

The reason we set it for this time of year is that if you're starting your race season in March, starting structured training in December gives you a nice three-month build to prepare for racing.

I'm starting to scout for a space. I'll put up a Doodle poll in a few days to gauge interest.

I'm thinking of December 4, 10, 11 as possible evenings for this talk.
Late to the 2012 season goals recap but here I go:

Not to get burn-out with wedding/working/racing. Check
Hold onto the Green Jersey in the Cat 4 L&C Cup. BIG CHECK!
Quit racing from August to middle of September (No crashes before the wedding) No facial scarring for the wedding photos was awesome!
Kill it in CX season (after the wedding) Uhhh, my one race I came in DFL (dead last and killing it are the same right?)
Get down to ~147lbs for CX season. Got to 150, and now up to 152 but I feel good for now..
Help Kissena riders get better, and get other rider's upgrade points. It was good to see so many guys get the upgrade points they wanted this year!

I got to ride D2R2 too this year, and I highly recommend it for anybody who wants a really challenging day in the saddle. I hope we can put together a team for this next year.

Lose 27lbs Ride 10-12 hours per week Ride to bear mountain and back

Goal A and B were accomplished, I was consistent with about 10 hours per week up until September, I've since tapered off and am around 4-5. Never made it to bear, meh...

2013 Goals are: get to 155lb and do do at least 5 races.

i'll ride to bear with you, mike

however, you might not be comfortable with the amount of snack stops i will want to make
Annual Training Talk Scheduled!

Monday, December 10, 2012.
7pm
Ride Brooklyn Park Slope

This is a talk where we discuss the elements of training and how to set up a training plan and how to fit it in with work, life, etc.

Essential for new riders.  Great for those who have training questions.  Super refresher for everyone else.
In like Flynn.

Folks, I accidentally put the time of the talk as 7am, not 7pm as it should be.

Can we keep mentor led events in the mentor thread? I totally missed this event because I didn't click the damn yellow star. How'd it go?

It's the new year: time to get serious and work hard for that towards-the-back-of-the-pack Cat-5 finish.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I have been giving some thought to my weekly schedule, influenced largely by @mugwump ‘s early-season talk (thanks JP!) and have devised the following.  Would be interested to know if anyone thinks this is outright wrong or if anyone has any pointers based on what they have seen / their own experiences.

Monday:       Gym (lower weight, higher repetition stuff: squats, lunges, some core work, etc)

Tuesday:       Sprints

Wednesday:  CompuTrainer (I'd like to say that I could structure the hour; however, the reality is it'll be 60 mins of relatively intense effort)

Thursday:    Hill repeats

Friday:        Day off or easy recovery ride

Saturday:    Group ride

Sunday:      Group ride or recovery ride or something TBD

The reality is that, due to weather / work / wife, I may need to switch some of the days around.  But broadly speaking I would aim to fit in the same sessions in a Monday-Sunday period.  It’d be between seven and 12 hours a week on the bike (not including the three or so hours a week I commute by bike) and an hour in the gym.

I know that hill repeats are something of a controversial inclusion.  I am including them because A) I hate hills and need to HTFU in that regard (or better -- come to love hills like a brother); B) in the last three months I have taken nearly 3mins off my Alpine PB and during that time I have been loosely doing HRs.  These two events may or may not be related.

Same goes for gym sessions.  I’ve been lifting weights on and off for the last however many years, but mostly upper-body stuff.  Switching to leg work, I have noticed that if I do high weight, low repetition stuff, it negatively impacts my ability to maintain harder efforts (usually on climbs).  That’s why I am going for lower weight, higher repetition.

Anyway, whatever – I’ll still suck.  But I want to make sure I am sucking in the most efficient way possible.  Any pointers there would be much appreciated.

Mark, at first glance it appears to me that you have built in too much intensity into your program. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and/or Sunday. At that rate, I'd be concerned that you'd be physically fried after about 6 weeks.

There's not enough balance. You've basically got all VO2 work and no threshold, tempo, endurance. For some on the club, the weekend group ride could be a tempo ride, but if you are a "back of the pack Cat 5," it's actually going to be much closer to race pace.

And some of the team's other mentor/coaches love to argue with me about this, but this particular mentor/coach, believes that you need to add base mileage in order to help grow your capillary beds to allow more blood/oxygen to flood your muscles, so when you do start doing sprints and hill repeats, you are doing them at a higher level than if you just jump into doing them right away without a good foundation.

I don't mean to be contrary but do you know any evidence to back this one up:

"you need to add base mileage in order to help grow your capillary beds to allow more blood/oxygen to flood your muscles, so when you do start doing sprints and hill repeats, you are doing them at a higher level than if you just jump into doing them right away without a good foundation."

The reason I ask, is that this seems to be a little counter intuitive to me.  Why would the body spend energy/effort making capillaries in response to an effort where the blood flow is sufficient and the effort remains aerobic.  Would intervals, where the blood flow is insufficient to maintain the effort as aerobic, not induce more extensive blood vessel formation, if anything would?

I'm happy to be convinced either way on this one (with the help of some published studies of course).
Come on now. I'm sure you know how to use pubmed:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18417645

"The goal of the study was to determine the effects of continuous (CT) vs. intermittent (IT) training . . . capillary density increased after both trainings, with a two-fold higher enhancement after CT (+21 +/- 1% for IT and +40 +/- 3% after CT, P < 0.05)."
Eleven subjects...how does this stuff even get published...?

Thanks Marc.  Regarding exercise variety: generally speaking I am fine on group rides.  I think they would fall under the "endurance" banner, but definitely not V02.

So that would mean fitting in a tempo and/or threshold workout.  I would be happy to drop the gym session each week, or perhaps structure the CompuTrainer sessions a little more to fit.  Those things are tough to structure though, what with the gap number forever taunting you.

P<0.05

You try getting people together for such a study. In my old study (my first pub), I only used 8 subjects. I think I was subject #3.

From what I've seen Mark isn't a back-of-the-pack 5. Well, not because of his legs anyway.

But yeah, your Tuesday through Thursday is really intense. You could do a couple three-week blocks like that building up for your main peak of the season, but it's probably pushing it for this time of year.

For reference I'm not doing anything above threshold for the rest of the month. I will be building up volume in tempo and threshold without increasing intensity at all, at least until mid-February most likely.

I do like how you are focusing on your limiters (sprinting and climbing). The trick is addressing those in a way that is sustainable.

Or, just go for it. Figure it out for yourself, because there will always be someone (on this forum several people) telling you you're doing it wrong. And besides, completely flaming out in May can be fun. And it's always fun to watch. Just this year Handsome Joe Mueller flamed out so hard he fell asleep in his omelette, showed up to some third-tier crit, went off the back after like 15 minutes and "quit bike racing." Great to watch.
