Training to Race: Faster, Stronger, Awesomer

Coggan calls 88-94% Sweet Spot.

Given he's an old friend, it's no wonder I am somewhat of a devotee.

useful chart.

didn't we have a long thread defining tempo somewhere?

That's CTS tempo! Funny. (I looked for an older thread but couldn't find it... Happy to merge them if someone can find it)

I look forward to getting some power measurement going this Spring so I can benefit from these things... and share more fully in this jargon with you guys.

and what Thomas Chapple calls UTT (upper training threshold) aka level4, something you can maintain for 60-75mins. He defines tempo as 75-85% of 30minutes critical power, maintainable up to 90mins.
I remember this tempo discussion actually, it was right when I joined KCC, Eric wrote a novel on it- it's gotta be somewhere around.
Eric, turn to page 7 of Group Rides (Sat&Sun) from June 2011. I think that's what you were referring to.
Alyosha if you can find Eric's novel ill happily merge the threads.

challenge: count the nipples!

i'm seeing . . . at least 30
Is there a "gross" button. Because that dude is GROSS looking. I'm feeling a little throw-uppy now.

Hey...I made a joke about "secret training" before, but I would actually love to hear what kind of stuff Mike Garrigan is doing to get ready for Worlds. He obviously couldn't go to Madison (unless he wanted to race single-speed with Myerson), but Chicago would have been a possibility, and then there's Cincinnati.

I don't get it...he looks overweight to me (I can only see 6 ribs)- which is gross yea I agree. I think he's the one who needs to throw up some more and shed some pounds.
Sigh.  Anyone have experience with repairing corrupt FIT files?
Fit files get written in xml.  Usually a spike in HR, speed or location is visible in the file itself and can be deleted out - you can use a simple text editor to open them.  Or, send it to me and I'll take a look.  What's the issue?
I went through a period where for some reason my Garmin wouldn't record anything but corrupt files. This site sorted it out every time: http://garmin.kiesewetter.nl/
Thanks a bunch guys! I'm taking the redeye home tonight so ill likely try this link and if it doesn't work I'll take you up on your generous offer Bruce.
I need to amend my statement after taking a look at my files.  The .fit files can't be opened in a text editor, but the .tcx files can be.  Garmin Training Center changes the .fit to tcx, making them editable. And once fixed, they can be reloaded back to the Training Center, or uploaded to Strava.  The last files I needed to update were .tcx.  My offer still stands, though, and I'm happy to take a look at the file.
The Garmin site worked yesterday when I poked it from my phone, I'll try again later in the day.
Right now it looks like it is down like a clown...

So I emailed the corrupt file to my (new) buddy at Strava, a SF Cat 2 who seems to be winning everything in sight.

He sent back the files repaired - when I asked how he did it he confessed to the same solution I'd settled on:

Fifty bucks though.
Too funny.  Apparently Matt the Strava guy is good buddies with Korioth, aka College.  Did I just bring some kind of virus back to the mothership?

Here's an article about cold-weather training. It says stuff that's pretty predictable, and tips that have been mentioned by us mentors for years. But I know some of you demand citations from peer-reviewed academic journals...and its got 8.

Seem to have ruffled your feathers a bit

If you are cranky, take a nap.

now now let's not get salty about any of this!

marc undoubtedly needs a nap, but he always needs a nap.

this is good info from a very good mentor.

i say let's read it, appreciate it, and give marc a swirly after gym class tomorrow.
Good info from Dr. Lim...a guy who has worked with both Floyd and Lance, but never noticed anything unusual about their training or race performances.  I want this guy, Carmichael and Ferrari to be banned...Oh wait, Ferrari has already been banned...that leaves the guy who doped juniors and the good Dr. Lim.
reaching for the right click...

Clinger uses it !!!! It MUST be good...wait isn't he banned for life??

http://www.oxygen4energy.com/david-clinger-cyclist-t-75.html
In 2010, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency banned him for 2 years for use of synthetic testosterone and modafinil.[1][2] In August 2011, David Clinger was issued a lifetime doping ban by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after testing positive during a random test while serving a prior doping ban. Clinger accepted responsibility for using clenbuterol for performance-enhancing purposes, USADA said. The second violation prompted USADA to issue the lifetime competition ban.[3]

Oh man....and I thought it was all about the Oxygen in a can........David, you lied to me !
My personal belief is that the current crop of grand tour dopers are focussing on these two:
  1. Fade more slowly in a stage race
  2. Be thinner
Although the topic of "raising the ceiling of potential" has been discussed a lot (pros seem to think this is real - doping in order to stay at the front of a grand tour - or five - has an effect that lasts for life) there doesn't seem to be much agreement on how real it is.
Watching Vino and Commesso go head to head will make you faser, stronger aweseomer !!!
I miss Commesso and his cut off jerseys.
