TT is back to the older version - single person start, full TT rigs...

Hello from the 6th Annual Tour of the Catskills - August 2-4, 2013,

Due to some challenging road conditions on the proposed hill climb Stage 1 in Hunter, we are reverting to a 12.2 mile modified version of the 2011-2012 stage 1 ITT with new start (outside of the Village) and turn-around locations. The finish remains at Hunter Mountain. Times should be very similar to previous editions. TT bikes and aero equipment are ok to use.

Newly minted 4's listen up! This is a fantastic race to do with teammates - a great long weekend and an epic set of rides.

Do it if you can, you'll look back on it fondly for years.

Troops-

Last call for this. We're trying to finalise digs as the race is ~4 weeks away. A few years back Ryan had some issues with kindly arranging the accommodation and then he was put in an awkward position with last minute decisions from members placing him in an unfair predicament. I'm nowhere near as understanding as Ryan so if you don't speak up now, that's that. Then you'll have to sleep on Yacks' sofa and apparently he calls out his own name during sexy time. Gross.

Anyone else (Alyoshas)? Anyone want to come for soigneur duties (Owens?). Anyone want to come to be team chef and have a nice weekend upstate in the sunshine, do a bit of hiking, fishing etc.?

FYI-for any Cat4s and Cat5s, there are the one day races, so you can just enter the second stage road race, the third stage road race, or both, and not do the full stage race, if work and commitments mean otherwise. I did this last year. BTW-if you have not raced up Devil's Kitchen you cannot consider yourself having done the NY racing thing. The three stand-out features of racing in this state: racing in Manhattan (Central Park or Harlem crit), Battenkill, Devil's Kitchen.

A nice discussion on the idea of TTs with mass-start equipment. I didn't even realise there was a specific USAC rule for it, which was more detailed than 'mass start equipment only'. The specific rule that can be applied by organisers, as long as they advertise it in the race package beforehand, is mass start equipment, not disc wheels. Furthermore, helmets and frames must be the same ones used throughout the remainder of the stage race. Not sure how that effects those who might have two road race frames (say, a Venge for the flat stage/crit and a tarmac for the hillier days). I guess it means use the same frame the whole time.

Wow- reading the race details, it seems that they have moved the finish of the Devil's Kitchen stage from Tannersville, another 5 miles to Hunter Mountain.

That changes the dynamic of the stage completely. Before, you get to the top of the Kitchen and you're close enough that even alone, not many people will catch you before the end. Now, that's totally changed. The benefit is now with the guys who go up slower but stay in a group versus the strongest guy who goes solo.

Interesting change. Looking forward to it.

Hey, putting this out there before deciding whether or not to do Hilltowns or Hunter over the next two weeks - anybody interested in riding the Catskills over the next two weekends, or doing some closer to home prep? I'm inclined to race since I missed Capital Region, but if a good group is looking for some hard prep, I'd love to train with teammates and I'd be stoked to learn a bit from those who have raced this before.

I'm still hoping for Hilltowns. I need to decide by tomorrow. Hilltowns is good Catskills prep. To me Hunter is too close to Catskills to be a worthy prep - you're not going to make any gains the weekend before. Its also really not that hilly.

I think the last year's heatwave plus year before's devastation of airport road left people (legitimately) overwhelmed by the race. Add in the 3 day trip and GMSR a month later and you have some good excuses for not participating...

Who could forget finishing Devil's Kitchen in the a thunderstorm though?

Ah DK. What a hill. In July/August there are generally two weather types in NY (except today??): 85+ degrees or thunderstorm. Can't really go up that hill very well in either. For my vote, would take the heat over rain- wheels don't get traction on that steep a climb in rain.

For some reason, the trend has been to have fewer Cat4 fields and replace them with multitude of age-grouper fields: 40+, 45+, 50+, 60+. Not sure why.

Reg numbers look okay...for some reason, I have it in my head that getting around 500 total registrants is sort of the minimum threshold for breaking even as a promoter.

Tires get plenty of traction in the rain, just rode it this wkend using a standard crank rotating around 50rpm!
