The Toe: A tale of suffering and tears lost in the rain...
So yesterday, distraught at both the cancellation of FBF and my lack of regularly scheduled mid-summer form I set out to do a little damage to myself - damage of the "oxidative stress" form. I wailed around that rainy park dodging Land Rovers on the downhill who would just as soon kill me as drive through a puddle and warily eyed the garbage bag clad denizens as they emerged zombike-like from the woods...
Triumphant - or almost as I only lasted 53 minutes out of my scheduled 60 - I coasted merrily down Union St dreaming of the wonderful feast that awaited.
Coming to stop light I un-clipped and put one foot down, turned the bars a bit and sat on the top tube. Now, having done this many times without fenders it never occurred to me that such pain, agony and distress was possible... BUT as the turned wheel and forward positioned foot intersected in what is commonly known as "space and time" I discovered the following impingement - toe caught between wheel and fender!
If you examine the carefully drawn and detailed diagrams below you will notice that the leading edge of the fender sought out that most delicate juncture of nail and toe as if it were a bamboo stake being driven in by a torturous captor. As one's natural instinct when STABBED IN THE TOENAIL BED is to pull one's foot back from the offending STAB I was doubly distraught to discover that pulling up and back only served to further entrap, pinch, stab, skewer and OMFG what is that PAIN?!?! my poor toe.
After several agonizing moments of lone, inscrutable struggle with intermittent meeps of agony I managed to free myself, avoid toppling and continue my coast downhill on Union street as I tried to process exactly what damage had been done to my poor blameless piggy.
Consider yourselves warned. Fate hates nothing more than a toe, it would seem.
hey @eric i reckon you're not working @yang and co hard enough. yang was TTing last night, came by on the hill, and had the energy (not to mention the nerve!) to shout abuse at me as he rode by. i would have really expected him to be red-lining at that point and thus unable to jeer. just sayin.
@jules i saw canadian mike last night. i kinda felt like a massive dick as i passed him at one point, and then as he was just about to pass me i started a 1-minute interval and sped up almost as if i were trying to race him. not to worry though: just as i was going anaerobic i think he switched from recovery into low tempo and blew by me.
