Giro del Cielo is going to happen June 23-24 with a similar format to last year. Emailed the promoters who are wrapping up final details and will post online soon.

This is looking much more practical for me than Fitchburg with my summer job in full swing already at that point. I think the race is run as an omnium, with a uphill TT, crit, and road race.

Jeff, I've done this race many, many, many times. In the past, I've recommended it to the team's hardmen, looking for a real challenge. Wide open country roads that are heavy and slow--they are mostly "paved" with what we midwesterners call "seal-coat." Basically gravel that's been stuck to the road...kind of like the back roads around Clauseland Mtn these days.. The course mostly rolls, with a short but steep wall 15-20% ensuring you have at least 90 seconds of brutality inflicted upon you every lap. The reality of it is though, you can inflict some serious serious suffering on the benign seeming rollers. There is frequently breakaways in this race which on the surface seems destined for a group sprint.

For athletic families, get there extra early and the loved one can participate in a running race before the cycling kicks off. Everyone will enjoy free Turkey Hill ice cream, lemonade (actually turkey hill lemonade is pretty gross, but it's free), water, soda, hot dogs, chips after your race. They have had, in the past, a silly local sports teams "mascot" races, and if I recall correctly there some kind of bouncy house action for the kids.

There's no shade on this course, so if it's sunny, it's usually a hot day. You'll race against a new crowd of mid-atlantic/PA types for a new challenge. I HIGHLY recommend this race. (I would go, but my mom and sister are coming to visit that weekend.)

The only questions left is, do I set myself up to have my body and soul crushed in the 123 field, or do I give myself a shot in the 3/4 field.

It does look like a good one to bring the family to, unfortunately girls rookie softball rules my family's Saturdays this spring. a) road, mountain, or cross bike ? I wonder what the chance of them landing reasonably close to a road is.
b) umm, bike strapped to the side, bike not IN the basket ? I can see it now, carbon bike falls to earth, rider takes into shop, "i was just flying along ...."

What does a Bicycle Race have to do with Balloons?
Bicyclist and balloon are randomly paired up (unless otherwise specified.) The bicyclist goes up in the balloon with their bike strapped to the balloon basket. After the pilot flies past a particular landmark, they land and let the bicyclist out. The bicyclist then must race back to the Fairgrounds. Whatever team makes it back first, in the shortest amount of time from launch to finish line, wins.

Has this ever been done before?
Yes, it was done years ago at the balloon festival in Bloomsbury, NJ and we began the tradition 3 years ago at the Warren County Farmers’ Fair. There are now two other festivals interested in starting the race. Where does the money go? 100% of the bikers’ registration fee goes to a local charity, the ADM Foundation (www.admfoundation.com). In 2009 we were able to raise $1,900 for the Foundation.

Intriguing indeed. It's middle of the week which makes it impossible for me; but if you go, we expect a detailed report. If you can light a cigar on the balloon burner and ride with it clenched in your teeth, extra better

Hey so William and I are committed to racing the 3/4s at Turkey Hill this Saturday. We're staying with our respective friends / lovers in Philly Friday night and then heading to Turkey Hill in the AM. It should be a really fun race. If anyone else can swing it.... it could be cool. I've been dying to race with some of you cat 4 ass kickers.
