Training Camps

I just bought my ticket, you bastard souls.
Bummed that JetBlue misplaced my bike for 24hrs. I'm in CA with a free 3-day weekend and was hoping to try my hand at three back-to-back hard climb long(ish) rides in the sun in anticipation of training camp. Alas, I only got in 100 relatively flat miles and a cat 2 climb. Luckily my Santa Monica rental comes with a beach cruiser. If I need a rest day, I can organize a 8-10mph tour de taquerias.

My goals for the weekend include identifying a few climbs I want to unleash my personal brand of hell on, but otherwise remember to keep my ass glued to my saddle as much as possible. I'm an incorrigible out-of-saddle climber. As the only lady on the trip thus far & a newer rider, I think every ride will include the "keeping up" goal.

You and me both! People told me that was a bad thing for a long time. I tried to correct it. Then I said screw it, and now I just climb out of the saddle a lot. It seems to be working.

Erika...I think you missed my point. "Keeping up" is not necessarily a good goal. A lot depends on whom you are trying to match. You can/will dig yourself into a big hole if you choose unwisely. Especially when you are likely doing rides that are both heavy on the miles and intensity. Don't be afraid to let certain riders go.

EVERYONE...practice saying it with me..."they're on a different program..."
GUYS I'M COMING TO CAMP I JUST BOOKED MY FLIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, that did necessitate all caps. I'm effing stoked.

BIKES

SUNSHINE

SHENANIGANSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not to fret, Marc. That last goal was meant more tongue in cheek. And if I don't come up with any goals beyond the first one, that'll suffice :)
Anyone going to the training camp looking to share hotel room costs? Originally iI was going to make a family trip of it, but some recent unexpected expenses seemed to have killed that idea. Looking to see whether I can make this work sans-family. Alternatively, any recommendations on good values in motel/hotel rooms in the area?
Patrick I'm probably looking for a roommate. Email me, and we'll set up camp for family-men-sans-family :)
Oh, and I guess I'm in :)
Will anyone attending camp who has not entered their information into the google doc, please do so, ASAP?

I am going to use the email addresses to create a group email list which will contain important information about the weekend. If you're not on there, you won't get the emails.

(and if you're hopeful but not confirmed and you just want to get the emails, you don't have to enter your flight info and all that, just put your name and email address)
I hope to finalize my plans this weekend. I am planning to stay in or by riverside....how far away will I be from where the rides will be leaving from? Dsanossian@yahoo.com
David - that's at least a 2 hour commute each way. Maybe much more on a weekday. That will be tough.
2 hours by car, I mean.

where are the rides leaving from??

Intersection of San Vincente Blvd and Ocean Blvd in Santa Monica
Just added my name.  Will add my flight info when solid.
wish i could go, my brother's place is nearly around the corner in pacific palisades
Would it make a difference if I said I would be staying in Hermosa? I thought my sister-in-law lived in riverside..... Planning on booking everything Saturday.

Hermosa? I think I had one of those at a brunch.
Hermosa would be much better. David, might I suggest Google maps? Just enter "Ocean and San Vicente" in Santa Monica and get directions from wherever you are staying. And then just assume that traffic will be horrible.
Just re-posting the most important notes about camp, 1 and 2 below (especially 2), since it's been awhile.

(1) This is an informal thing and while I will be helpful, I will not play organizer or chaperone except to a limited extent. So, while I'm happy to make suggestions as to where to stay, maybe help find a team house, answer unlimited questions, and so on, riders will have to get themselves there, make their own arrangements, keep themselves fed, and show up at the ride jump-off points at the scheduled times.

(2) All are welcome. However, everyone should know that this will be a very challenging long weekend. Lots of miles, lots of mountains, and the standard no-drop policy will not be in place except on climbs. And even then, if you are WAY behind (some of these climbs are an hour long) we may not wait. BUT - and this is a BIG BUT (har har): If you are new or not in great shape **do not be deterred**. I will create cue sheets and ride maps so no one has to worry about getting lost. And really, its not hard to find your way around with a fancy cell phone and/or a decent sense of direction. It's basically North to South on PCH, and either up a mountain or down it back towards the ocean. So bottom line: even if you're worried about being able to stay with the group, we'll make sure you are taken care of and get you back safe and there will be lots of team hanging out and learning time. In fact, the more people who come the more likely it is we can organize "hard" and "easier" rides. So that's it. Let me know if you are interested so we can start to get an idea of numbers. We already have a great group of return campers, and some first-time ones as well, even before this official announcement.
Already checked stokes' link.....looks good. Anyone know where I can get my hands on a bag for an ISP bike?. Not looking to drop $400 on a pica if I can avoid it.
ISP limits your options greatly. Do you have a more standard frame? We ain't gonna be racing after all!
All it took was a blizzard to finally push me off the fence. I am going to LA for the training camp! I am psyched.

I am flying out early in the week with the family and they are flying back Friday. I'll be heading back on the same Virgin Atlantic Flight with Mike and Joe on Sunday. Good times.
All,

The rides we will be doing in California are available at:

http://ridewithgps.com/users/7308/routes

Here you can view them, print them, export them to Garmin file, etc.

These routes may be subject to change before the actual event, but I thought it would be good to let everyone get acquainted with ridewithgps ahead of time, as I'd like to make this the center for up-to-date ride plans. I am giving myself until Friday February 6 to tweak - after that date you can consider whatever you see here to be locked in.

Note that the very challenging days on Friday and Saturday are designed so that the third climb of the day can easily be skipped, for anyone who wants a slightly less epic day. Also note that I never really plan Sunday ahead of time; we play it by ear that day.

Also, all who are attending this camp, you must sign this fancy digital waiver that makes it clear that you won't sue me or the club if you get all stupid and ride yourself off a mountain pass because the sun makes you think that you can descend like Nibali.

Reminder that if you're going to California, you need to sign the waiver:

And add your name to the "Confirmed Rider Contact Info" sheet on the Google doc at:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0An3Mt2Dj-_RDdDI0WlQ2clp6amtCT0l4THFpMzN6UUE&usp=sharing#gid=1

If you haven't done these things, it means I don't know that you're confirmed, so you're not on the email list, and you're already missing important emails about the weekend.
So my Airbnb fell though and I'm searching for alternative accommodations. Before I pay through my nose for last minute Airbnb (or god forbid, a hotel) wanted to see if anyone else is a) still searching for lodging and b) would be interested in sharing something. emtarte@gmail.com
I am not going, but if I were, I'd look to share this with someone:  VRBO - 334342
Just firmed up some work trips and Pacific Palisades coincides with the training camp (the week leading up to).  If I can work out the logistics, might be able to swing a Saturday ride and maybe Sunday, though I'll need to fly back to the office on a red eye that night.

Looking at options to rent a bike instead of having to bring a bike with my suit/garment bag and such.  Any thoughts?
