Sure seems like USAC screwed Carmen Small for a rider who is not as good a TT'er and probably can't contribute during the road race.

So I've been totally out of commission with team training for over a month now while I get used to my new job schedule, but there was also another reason that kept me off the road for a bit. I have a part time job as an art model with some of the area art schools, and I had a Saturday painting class for the entire month of June. I convinced them to do a 'costume' booking, so now there are about a dozen paintings of this grouchy-looking Kissena cyclist out in the world. Enjoy!

I think  the Cinelli 65 bars (aka the Crit bend) and the Cinelli 1R stem really add to the lust factor.  The Benotto tape I loved as well: so cheap, so easy to put on, so easy to add some splash to your bike.

Reminded me, in the early 90s lusted a bit after the bridgestone RB-1, specially because of this ad w/ "Pineapple Karen" looking exactly how we all should feel when we ride.

Know what u r looking at?  That is a 1991 Bridgestone MB-4....My first MTB.  Yeah I wanted the MB-1 but couldn't afford it on my lifeguard salary.  That bike sat in layaway for months...I'd visit it on pay days...cause I didn't have a god damn credit card & if I wanted something I had to show people the cash...Ultimately I pawned my guitar amp to make the final payment.  Check out the Scott Uni-shock up front (two coil springs with no dampening = think 2 pogo-sticks on the front of your bike)...toe clips & strap cause 1991
I'd be remiss if I did not mention  the XO-1...Bridgestone built these things back when men grew beards to save money on razors and drank PBR cuz it was cheap & it got you drunk...so don't call it a hipster bike !!! you've been warned...

Oh man you know how much I love these classic steel bikes. I may revert my Panasonic made Schwinn back to its down tube shifter glory.

I'm proud to say that my first true race bike, bought in 1983, was a Serotta. Bought it 2nd hand with some insurance money after getting hit by a car. The former owner was a top racer in the DC area. When I had it repainted, I noticed Ben Serotta brazed his initials inside the frame, along with a number. It now rests in my brothers attic. I'd like to resurrect it some day. Give it a new paint job and bring it back to the luster it deserves. It's a beautiful, classic bike with lots of wonderful memories. 

I've been watching the Tour of Utah and it has been great...some these guys look just like us at the top of a hill = oxygen depleted, cooked and gangely on the bike...they look human and it;s awesome racing going on. I'm enjoying this stupid race waaaay better then the tour this year

Just saw the finale.  Van der Bergen and Johansen owe a huge debt to Longo-Borghini who took monster pulls, and probably took a 1k pull at the end, maybe longer, to catch Abbott.

Don't know what was up with Longo-Borghini.  There was no way she could win with a pull like that.  Maybe she didn't think she  had a chance in the sprint with the other two, so she expected to get fourth if she didn't ride like that.

I think you are right. Looking at Longo Borghini reaction to third -- she seemed the most excited of the three -- add to that, the fact the Longo Borghini rides in support of Emma Johansson at Wiggle/Honda -- not even suggesting the typical teammates vs country stuff, but much more of simply usual dynamics. At that point of struggle and pain, it made sense to pull, as that is what you would usually do when Emma is around. It worked. --- as a side but related to winning excitement, Vos seemed as happy as if she had won herself

Correct, but you understand the infinitely hard to explain dynamics that could have been at play, and as you mentioned, superscored than by catching Abbott, Longo Borghini betters her chances of a medal.

-- i.e. Emma and I are chasing together so we operate as a bit more of a team -- those dynamics are a bit mentally pre-set: "Emma is stronger, and can win, Mara can drop us on any climb but I can alway catch her on the flats"

... or whatevs, I am obviously speculating. It just all seemed to fit.
