Best Stage Win Ever:

A shot from one of my favorite cycling publications, pezcyclingnews.com

Masciarelli wins on top of Mont Faron at the Tour Méditerranéen

My personal stage favorite win is LA going up Ventoux in 2000 winning in the clouds (or was in 1999 or 2001).

However, someone could very well argue Hampstem winning in the snow over Gavia was the most epic stage ever.

However, where would we be if Tulio Campangnolo had not flated in the Giro in a similar day almost 80 year ago.
cool Kenyan coverage of yesterday's Tour of Oman stage

as usual, when Boasson Hagen wins, he flails his arms around like a big puppy
All so epic WDC and CLP.

One of my current favorite photos is much less epic, shot by a friend and tweeted while crossing the manhattan bridge.

Anything with a doped up lance winning is an epic fail regardless of the scenery.

Try this!!!
ew, gross^

Here's Grewal's 1984 Olympic win and his recent blog post about it.

the thing that struck me about the video, though, is that it looks like he won the sprint by taking a straight line through a gently curving road.
fixed that for you, m'hombre

Mattio, I wateched the finale a few times. I'm not sure if the road curved; it's hard to tell with the curving road lines. Technically, finish straights are supposed to be just that, straight. Unless there's a road feature you can't work around, the final 200-300m typically has to be a straight line.

If I remember the reports of that era, the road went from slightly down to slightly up in the final few hundred meters. I think Alexi speculated at the time that if it had been flat, Bauer would have won.

I also read Alexi's commentary on the race. Watching him hump his bike when Bauer caught him and how Alexi barely made it on to Bauer's wheel over the top of the climb, I have a hard time believing he was just waiting for someone to come up.

Regardless, Kudos to Grewal. By his telling, he wasn't the strongest guy out there, he wasn't the team favorite, and yet he took the race.
Maybe; it is hard to tell, but it looks like Bauer follows the barriers, but Grewal goes away, perpendicular to the finish line, and then once he's got a jump on Bauer, Bauer notices and corrects.

I found his telling of the story to be terrific. It's not easy to write about a victory and make yourself seem like just a little bit of an asshole, while honoring those you've defeated, without going overboard. He finds a lovely balance.
Kinda neat cycling pic

here's a picture Dan Chabanov took yesterday during our ride up to Rockland Lake

This is the gas station at the bottom of the downhill just over the Rockland Climb and right before you take a left down into Nyack.

I'm bummed it's closed - many of the best Coca-Colas I ever had were right there.
