The basic need is for the critter to be able to hold her head up (with a helmet on it) for an hour.  I was told 52 weeks was a good age.  I'm sure it could be sooner for some.  Oscar was probably 16 months.  

I had to return the first helmet I got him.  I think I wrote about this before.  I got him a Nutcase skater-type helmet, and after 30 minutes in the seat, he was using his arms to hold the helmet up.  There are plenty of light helmets out there and I returned the heavy one for something much lighter.  

Expect them to sleep in the seat.  The person who took the pic below told me that his daughter, who was riding next to him at the moment, slept in the seat most of her toddler years.  It was how he got in the miles.

Pros:

• You install a mounting bracket on your stem which lets you pop the seat in/out in seconds (there's two kinds of mounts: 1 for road stem (purchased separately), one for high stem).
• There's a barrel lock on the bracket so you can lock the seat in place to avoid theft.
• Hugo loves being up front and we can point things out to him instead of staring at back like other seats. 
• It's fun!

Cons:

• Marginally usable on a road bike — steering is a bit sketch because seat hits frame limiting your "lock". You have to point knees out a bit. You can't reach the bars without squashing. I still use it on my old road bike — I have the bars tipped up so I can reach the brakes and not squash Hugo. We certainly couldn't do the 5-borough on it though.  
• It's really for an Amsterdam/hybrid style bike or bike with a high stem to get it up higher.
• I guess tipping is potentially an issue with the high C of G, especially for the inexperienced rider.

Both Hugo and John seem pretty aero, with 2 and 1 vent apiece.

Though looking at the areo bars in front of Hugo there, I think the UCI may have concern with the angle. Floyd praying mantis position and all.

Having a Hugo on your bike is UCI legal. I checked.

Not much racing recently, but definitely cat-ing up on the "family bike" front...

My turn to add a photo of cycling with my son, Adrian. We're in the plaza in front of the UN here in Geneva. The jersey I'm wearing is for a startup cyclists beer that I'm doing some freelance work for. It's based out of Holland, and hopefully it will grow and travel to the US. 
Adrian loves bicycles. Has his own word for them: Goodjyo. If he sees one, he desperately wants to turn the cranks backwards and check the tire pressure. A born cyclocrosser.

Microshift 7 speed, with probably the worst design for dusty or muddy conditions due to the entire mechanism being exposed when pulling the brake levers.

Only if I get like a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts as a hand up every lap. I will stop, drop the kickstand, and consume said handups while chatting with my benefactor(s).

Yes. They are the greatest chainrings ever made and I wish I had them on every bike.

Question for the list, particularly the Park Slopers:

Does anyone out there have a baby carrier that they are ready to part with/sell? ISO Baby Bjorn Miracle (or other Bjorn with lumbar support) or Stokke MyCarrier Front Baby Carrier.

My sister, a new parent, in the slope, isn't happy with what she has in this dept.  We had a Bjorn with lumbar support, but gave it away ages ago.

My son, age 10, could use a bigger, better bike.  I want to get him something with at least 24" wheels, preferably road and/or 'cross oriented.  Flat bars are fine.  Gears are wanted.  

Looking to see if any of the other folks here with kids are looking to get rid of a bike that might fit.
