Jules,

I'm neither a great indoor rider, nor do I have a great 1m effort. That written, I don't think that people can really get to their outdoor 1m max riding a trainer. Maybe Ragot, who used to focus on the kilo, can share his input.

20x1m with 1m rest in-between? what kind of numbers are you putting out? How do those numbers compare to a day when you just focus on one or two 1m efforts? Do you limit your max so that you can do them all?

the times I do 5x1 with 1m rest each effort totally to the limit, my power is seriously fading by the end of the fifth. Any time I've done 10x1, I limit my power so that I can do all 10. I've never tried 20x1, but I think I'd be shooting for something like 30% above my threshold for the efforts, not what I see as my 1m max.

I'm not sure what this workout is training other than giving you a flogging. A flogging is a fine thing, but I wonder if there's a better way to get the same flogging.

The moral I'm fine with.
@Wump,

It's a good question - "max" is the wrong word - when I've tried them at "MAX FULL GAS GOGOGOGO!!!" I quickly explode like a barge full of contraband fireworks and fade mightily.

And no, I cannot come close to my true outdoor max inside.

With some better guidance now I'm aiming for 115-125% of my FTP; when I can't hold that I bail (which I did on Saturday)

My (and others) actual max seems to be (although I haven't tried for that brass ring yet this year) somewhere in the range of 2x FTP give or take a scream of encouragement.

Perhaps I should try packing tape on my shoes ala Malcolmson-Zilla
Last night at the Rapha event, I was chatting with Jeremy Powers about his Gran Fundo. I heard the expected, "oh,man, you gotta come, it's awesome." And I told him that the funny thing is now I'd love to see childcare at events. He said they were actually looking into a bouncy tent and some other stuff and seemed open to suggestions.

So, to those with kids, what kinds of things would make it easier to bring spouse and grommets to bike events?

For Oscar, bouncy tent is awesome. face-painting and petting zoo are yawners.
Weren't bouncy tents taken off the list for lead?

100 mile grand fondo means like a 6+ hour stay for the family - I think the ideal setup would have the fondo criss crossing the same park where family could cheer ala cross race.

For me there aren't amusements enough to keep the whole family there unless said amusements amount to an entire beach town... maybe when they are older...

I'm guessing that the Gran Hundo will take four hours if you ride it with the group.
Four? Indeed it could; the pre & post milling about/snacking could add another 90 minutes easy though.
Jules,

That story is from 2010. I've seen them at events since. I did the most basic web searches and haven't found anything on the matter since 2010.
Funny conversation overheard by Sarah at today's race in Rahway.

Dad to be: You know what I need? A baby bachelor party.

Friend: Yeah, have your fun now.

DTB: Before I'm changing diapers all the time

Friend: Like a "guy baby shower."

DTB: Yeah, a baby shower with strippers.

Hey family men, I'm on vacation, so that means, I'm on a writing tear. Sorry for the shamless plug. From my personal blog, you'll learn what birthing class, West Side Story and shiny red skin-suits (we called them unitards back in the 80s) have in common.

That is all.
Posted on behalf of Marc & BBB (Baby Boy Bertucco)

"...proud papa wants you all to know so I'm going way old school with an email blast.

Well, it's official. No longer an information-hungry interloper on the Family Men thread only, on June 21 at 4:57 in the morning, Sarah gave birth to a 4200 gram baby boy named Peter Reynolds Bertucco. Our big baby was observed doing leg lifts in his hospital bassinet, and while Sinai hospital currently doesn't offer newborn VO2 max testing, I expect he might be a Classics rider."

Let me be the first to welcome Marc into the Family Men's thread.  Begun, your detraining has...
test

Congratulations Mark and Sarah.

Congrats Marc. I guess you'll be testing a lot over the next few months . . . And years. Savor the babymoon.
Congrats Marc and Sarah...who needs sleep?
Still having trouble posting pics, but just as well. This shouldn't turn into my personal internet picture book. If you want to see pictures though, I'm posting them on my FB page, so just "friend" me and you'll get to see them all! Thanks everyone for your congratulations.

This detraining idea though...disturbing, but not surprising. "You mean, I'm going to get even slower?" Yikes. I will look to JP as my role model though. Just like he's the only guy that actually goes faster the minute his hands come off his handlebars and he starts chomping into an energy bar, I'm pretty sure his racing and training improved when Oscar came along. At a minimum he certainly didn't lose a step.
@Marc consider it an incentive to become very efficient with your time on the bike.  Works wonders for some.. :)
Congratulations from Paris.
chapeau!
congrats, papa!
Congrats Marc! Saw the pics on FB - a very handsome lad.
Congrats, Marc and welcome, young Peter. Let the adventure begin.

Hey family men (and women...Mrs. Jules, welcome!) who remember...any recommendations on diapers? Huggies and 7th Generation bizarrely can not contain my boy's pee. I do realize that I probably have helped create a super-child with super powers including pee that can cut through and weld titanium, but I would have thought a big brand name like Huggies would have worked to contain my son's brilliance. Honestly, I'm not so surprised that the natural brand doesn't work well though.
