Injury: Sprains, Strains, Breaks & Insurance

Big gears can lead to knee pain.
Use a smaller gear - or ride a bike that has more than one.
Use ice a few times a day, and definitely after you ride your bike. Continue doing this until you forget that you have an injury.

and stretch.  then stretch some more.

my PT (who's awesome, in case you want to see her) was pretty adamant that a lot a lot of the problems cyclists face on the bike are due to our tight (admittedly, glistening and hard) muscles.  my own knee problems were in large part solved because i started regularly stretching my calves, quads, IT bands and hamstrings.  it's a hassle, to be sure, but worth it for keeping pain at bay.

Wasn't sure this was the most appropriate place to add this, but got some news today and, since I've had to post here about injuries, figured I'm due some balance.  I let my high blood pressure prescription run out a couple of weeks ago because I'm not responsible for a select few things in my life.  I've been taking the lowest dose possible since I was 27 or so.  My doc checked my blood pressure and turned to me, asked if I exercised much.

I spit a little when I laughed.  And then proceeded to explain to him what exercise meant by my, and my team's, definition.  No prescription refill because, well, it's not that high any more.  It should be getting even higher as I get older, but apparently Alpine is good for the blood, as well as the soul.

Bruce,
I've been down so long, I don't know what is up.

Congratulations on the diagnosis.
So this is an ironic post, after my last one. Tried commuting to work on Tuesday and slipped on the black ice on the Brooklyn bridge. Just came out of surgery where they put in 3 screws for my broken hip. Off the bike for 4 months. The pain is really reduced at the moment, but we'll see once the meds wear off. Stupid to try to commute in that weather. The bike is fine.
Sorry to hear that @Bruce. Get better. Actually safety is the reason I'm off the bike for now...and drinking instead.
Ah jeez. @Bruce-That sucks.  Really sorry to hear that. Heal well.
Oh no, Bruce! I'm so sorry. Glad to hear you're feeling better at the moment, but that's just horrible. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Bruce. I'm so sorry to hear about your accident, you have been so strong on the bike lately. It's tragic that you have been banged up that way Heal up buddy.
Bruce. Sorry. Heal up.
Oh, that's a serious bummer Bruce. Hope you heal quickly.

Aaaargh!  Bruce!  That is a cruel setback indeed.  You WILL be back.  Heal up soon.
Sorry to hear that Bruce. Tuesday was a crappy day out there. Heal up.
Arrrgh, that's some bum luck, Bruce! Sorry to hear it.

Where on the bridge did you crash? I'll give it a stern talking to.
Nooooooo! Bruce that sucks. Let us know what you need. Heal up.
Bummer, BVS.  Here's to your quick and full recovery.  You'll be back and crushing it Spring of 2014.
Bruce, I am very, very sorry to hear about your accident. Treacherous, bastard black ice... I know you'll come back stronger and more determined. Looking forward to riding with you again soon.
You were just gunning for the broken bone award, weren't you? I can't believe that happened to you. What a major drag. Heal up quick and welcome to the club.

Hey.  Thanks for all the good wishes, and the great emails you've sent with offers of support.  I am going to take some of you up on that, as I'm not too mobile at the moment.  It does make my heart swell a bit, reading all of this.  Thanks, Team.
Went into surgery last night around 7 under general anesthesia and this morning, once the dilaudid wore off, I ate breakfast and had my first PT session on crutches, practicing stairs.  After the second session this afternoon, the PT guy and doctor agreed I could go home.  I'm in pretty good shape and all that training has come in very handy in this recovery process.  And those stupid planks?  Yep, using my core every time I sit because I'm not allowed to put any weight on my left leg for a couple of weeks.
My Dad is staying with me, my brother is going to be helping out and my GF is around for support, so all in all, I'm pretty lucky.
I'm still a bit out of it, exhausted, and I'm going to get my sleep on for the next couple of days.

On the Brooklyn Bridge, I was heading to Manhattan, taking that last turn before the long straightaway downhill on that last leg of the bridge.  As I turned slight right, the bike slid out under me and I went down on my left side.  I believe the top tube broke my leg/hip and, Yacks, I can't help wondering if my commuter had been carbon fiber, would I have been fine?

I'll post photos of the three screws in my hip to announce I'm officially in the metal-in-body club, and yep, the screws are titanium.

Ok, PT, core workouts, stretching, weight on food, indoor riding, outdoor riding, out to Piermont, tempo pace, racing.  Pretty simple plan.  I'm looking forward to riding with you in late April.

Any advice, recommendations?  Would love to hear it.  odysseusontheocean@yahoo.com  718-864-2699

Bruce, that really really sucks. On Tuesday I went very cautiously through the same piece you crashed on (because I'd crashed there before) and even then didn't see that ice and just managed to keep it upright — must have been carnage there all day long. Heal up mate.
bruce, I was so bummed for you when I heard today. You're always such a pleasure to ride with, man - wishing you healthy recovery -- and, happy holidays to you.
@Bruce and @John-Ive crashed there in the past as well.
I've just started a new "X-Rays etc". thread for anyone who wants to post theirs. The intention is not in any way to make light of of injuries, but to gawk at what we're capable of doing to our bodies and admire the wonders of modern medicine. I know a bunch of pretty dramatic ones have been posted throughout the forum in the past--for instance, who could forget Vlad's multi-screw elbow reconstruction?  Sadly, there have to be at least a dozen collarbone x-rays floating around. Feel free to post--please only your own.
ah Bruce what a bummer man :(  Hope you heal up real soon. My wife just had ankle surgery last month and is no-weight-bearing on her left side for 2 months or so-- it's frustrating her, but she's doing PT like a boss, which definitely seems to be helping her move along.  Good on your for getting into it so quickly.

Yes Bruce...the genius of carbon bikes is that they have crumple zones designed into them, thus saving the occupant from serious injury.  If volvo built bikes, they'd be carbon.
Another quick shout out for Premier Care on 5th Ave and 8th Street in Park Slope for your non-life threatening injuries.
My daughter's mother got clipped in the back of her ankle by a wayward skateboard this afternoon at about 1:50. By 3:05 she had 14 stitches and was resting comfortably at home. If she would have gone to the emergency room at Methodist she would still be waiting.
I don't think team doc Lisa was there today, but the rest of the staff did a bang up job in her absence.
Team doc and I were wrangling the last row in Delta 1496 with two underfed kids.  She would've loved to be there though...
I must say that review has me clamoring for a significant, yet non life threatening injury.  Perhaps something not too cosmetic and one that will not affect my riding in way.
