Injury: Sprains, Strains, Breaks & Insurance

@MaxThorn what about a chiropractor? I know a guy who works with all sorts of athletes and has done magical things for some of my friends and myself.
Thanks but the general practitioner I've been talking to (who, full disclosure, is also my father, haha) recommends PT.
Neither of these are cycling specialists, but they both do have plenty of experience treating athletes:

I worked with Spear PT down by WTC and I give them an 8/10. They work you hard and definitely take a "strengthening" approach, or at least they did for my lower back pain. Kind of a pain in the butt to get in through the office building.

I worked with PhysioLogic in downtown Brooklyn to rehab my shoulder after the separation and broken clavicle and also give them an 8/10. They were a bit gentler and incorporated more massage and electrical "stim" sorts of passive treatment; I sometimes felt like I could do more but who knows. Beautiful new facility above Shake Shack. Definitely left feeling well cared for and renewed mentally leaving those appointments.
Thanks @Jeffrey White I'll look into those
Ugh, I really dislike posting in this thread, but wanted to let you know why I won't be on the bike for a while, during some of the best weather for riding.

I backed way off training and riding this year, and didn't race, because, well, I used my training time to write a novel.  I got my rough draft finished a few weeks ago.  After 9 years of racing, I figured I was due for some time for other things.

Because I wasn't riding so much, I decided to run a little bit (silly me), and on the third run of a single mile, I got a twinge in my left leg, something I know is associated with my back.
The following week, I probably should have backed way off after a 21 mile ride in the park produced a numb left foot.  But a week later, I rode again, only once.

After two days in the ER this week and an MRI, I have a confirmed herniated disc in the L4/L5, and such intense pain down my left leg, I kept passing out.  The pain has subsided, and I'm full of so many toxic pain relievers (and steroids, TUE anyone?) that it's easing off, and it looks like I won't need surgery.

(By odd coincidence, the guy in the bed next to me hit a pothole on his bike.  Lots of road rash, no helmet and no concussion, stitches on his face and hand, and he got to go home - I was envious he was able to walk out of there.  I told his wife about Tegaderm, thanks to you guys.  And I checked, his bike was ok.)

Surgery is an hour and half, outpatient, and you go home after 3 hours.  But, my surgeon wants to do everything possible to avoid it, so I'm on the couch for the next month, maybe two.

And my thanks to Jules and Lisa for medical advice when I reached out to them - I really appreciate it.

For my sake, please don't post anything bicycle or race related or any kind of fun you're having while riding or enjoying sports.  We're all in this together, right?

Doing nothing is the hardest thing of all.  See you in a couple of months.

Will that be CX season?
I really enjoyed all the seasons of The Expanse, if you're looking for some non bike related screen time. Black Carbon was pretty good too. When do we get the advance copies of the novel - or are you publishing under a pseudonym?

I bet we could... ahem.... help you come up with a good one?

"Blade von Sorcerer?"
Heal up Bruce!
"Billy von Sailboat?"
Good luck, Bruce, I suffered and still have a herniated disc after a crash around Grant Tombs. It took a while, but you should be back 100%. Take good care, heal fast.
Bruce,
I'm sorry to hear about you back issues buddy and I'm sure that you'll heal very soon.
Bruce,

Sorry to hear about the back - curses of being bipedal. Heal up quick and hope to see you in the park getting ready for CX season.

But it is great news to hear you have a draft of your novel. That's a serious accomplishment. Looks like you'll have some time to do some rewrites and edits.

Crashed relatively hard on Cunningham last Monday.

Nothing broken, except my pride (yet to check the bicycle tho...) the worst is a very bruised and strained left shoulder, along with a huge mega left hip hematoma. Did hit my head too, took a good 15~20 minutes before I could walk myself out of the park.

Luckily, nothing appears too serious.

Went to the Doctor yesterday, no signs of concussion. So far, everything suggests I should be able to ride after a few days of rest and healing.

I will skip Whirlybird and maybe Nittany, aiming for a comeback at Cooper River.

Won't be able to lead Thursday/Fridays cx sessions at Prospect for a couple weeks. Maybe @Dan Reiners can take over?
@eloy sorry to hear the news. I hope you heal quickly.
Eloy  - heal up quick.

My season kick-off should be Cooper River. Hope I can give you a ride.
Wow, that sounds like a hard fall.  I'm glad nothing's broken.  Heal up.
Ugh. Crashing like that while alone sucks. Heal up quickly
Heal up Eloy that’s a darn shame. Sleep a little extra and take care of that brain. Looking sharp is always good for healing bruised pride; we know you’re a pro at that.
Sorry to hear about your spill! , so nearly joined you Monday , wish i had, did you have to take the train home?

Thanks, no worries, I seem to be healing fine, altho I already miss riding bikes. Yes, once I was able to walk and not feel dizzy, I walked off the trails (was close to 210 street) and then gingerly/slowly rode to the train.

I appreciate everyone comments. Will be back on the bike soon.

Crap sorry to hear Eloy. Please feel free to call/text me if you get into trouble at Cunningham since I'm close and have a car to drive you back to Brooklyn.

Thanks, I appreciate it a lot. I did consider calling you, but once I realized I could get to the train, it went all mostly ok.

Started riding again this week. Kinda crazy how much strength and fitness one can loose in just a few days. Meeting w/ Orthopedic Doctor this Friday, hoping to align on when I could race again.
Those Cunningham trails are a B$tch with a capital B. When I went riding there a couple weeks ago with Patrick I fell on some rocks. Only left with a bruised hip and some scratches on my leg, but my rear wheel on my brand new Giant is wobbling!

Time for a new bike! obvs!
So I skied into a hole last week and tweaked my ankle/calf. Doc says it may be an Achilles tear. We'll see after the MRI.  Hopefully I won't need to repair surgically. Bummed to kick off 2019 off the bike. Oh well, I'll start my season late this year I suppose.

Terrible news.

Though bummed we can't add a pic of you smiling a thumbs up in an ER somewhere.

Doubly terrible.
I'm hoping for the best @Jeff Condon

That sucks! Good luck with the MRI and recovery.
Ouch! Hope it’s not as bad as it sounds. Then again, you can be peak for late season races and could have an excuse to try CX
Good luck @Jeff Condon . I hope you heal quickly.
Good luck Jeff that sounds like a raw deal
