My only word of advice is to be patient and not obsess when you can climb on the bike again.
That's really shit news Greg I'm sorry to read that. Keep in mind you're only ever 100 days away fro some really good fitness so try not to get too down on it all.

Hang in there man.
Good luck Greg...Yack's is licking his wounds today...I was toying with some guy on his MTB at Cunningham...letting him close the gap to me then attacking..this went on for a bit until the Sling slung me over the bars into a full on face plant...cracked some of the veneers on my front teeth and the glasses crunched the bridge of my nose right smart...some other scrapes and bruises but all in all I'm ok...little concussed

@twoyacks damn that blows, but now you get to look like a badass. corey the courier(the single speed cyclocross world champ? at least thats what he told me) broke his collar bone 3 weeks agound training in Cunningham.

as for my injury, I was given hydrocortisone a couple times this month which helps tremendously. I am hopeful the epidural will provide long lasting relief. doc cleared me to ride “chill” for the time being.

if you can ride chill....can you Zwift ?
@GregStreiff and @Yacks heal up!

@Yacks Sunny side is, just add some silver skull rings, eyeliner and a couple of dreads and you've nailed your Halloween look.
Heal up guys. @GregStreiff hope your recovery is a smooth one and that you don’t look as crazed as Yack’s picture.

Speaking of which, @yacks is the good news that you’re just in time for Halloween?
WOW....They printed my teeth right in front of me...amaz-balls...new teeth in an hour

oh shit...
Hi guys.

Is there a doctor in the house? I seem to have an unusual injury that my doctors can't figure out which is why I haven't been training lately. I'm getting a sudden, extremely sharp pain in the back of my knee. It's sporadic, but when it strikes it feels like I'm being stabbed right in the peroneal nerve. Anyone ever had this? It's always in the same spot - no shooting pain down the leg - so it looks like it's not sciatica. MRIs of my back and knee are normal. No tears in my calf, hamstring, or gastrocnemius tendon. Also had an EMG test which was normal. Muscle relaxers didn't make a difference. The only thing that seems to help is Tylenol. So far I've tried seeing an orthopedist, physiatrist, neurologists, and a pain management doctor and no one can find the problem. I was riding the same bike for a year and a half before it started, so it doesn't look like it's a bad bike fit. Any ideas would be welcome. One person told me I could try seeing a vascular surgeon.

Has anybody out there had this kind of pain before from cycling? Hoping to get back on my bike soon. Thanks for your help! Best, Andrew
Hey Andrew,

Two things to consider:

1) bikes and bodies drift - seatposts shift and pedals wear - don't discount fit
2) have you seen a physiotherapist? Maybe one that specializes in sports like biking?

As Jules suggested, fit is very important and both your bike and body can change.  A good fitter might have an idea (Ilya at Redbeard is one such person) and might be able to eyeball you riding to have insight.

I don't know if Ilya has practice with this, but some folks find that a more supportive insole sometimes helps the knee track better by preventing your arch from collapsing.  Over time, insoles can wear as well--and many cycling shoes come with minimal and flimsy insoles.

^ to elaborate a bit more; your body will change over time; a good fit from last year is not necessarily a good fit this year.

A nifty bit of advice I picked up was carrying a little tailor's tape measure in my saddle bag. It weighs nothing but saddles & seatposts will drift over time and it's now the first thing I check when something starts to hurt.

While I don't carry it in the seatpost bag, I have the exact tape measure in my tool bag.

It's not secret, but I will be forever amazed by how big even a millimeter adjustment feels.

As stated, a good fitter, like Ilya at redbeard, or Jon at Acme, can help you, and be very precise to address this one issue -- especially if Doctors are not finding anything specially wrong.

Ilya fitted me with some insoles that helped a lot with some hot foot issues I was having.

Also, Eric M. has an appropriate story that went something like this - He was having some knee pain. He went for a fitting and found that his seat shell was cracked. New seat. Knee pain gone.
Here is a list of shit that caused me damage:
  • cracked seat rail (seat listing to the side)
  • seat slipped down
  • worn pedals
  • seat slipped forward
  • seat tilted over time
  • I got old
  • I got out of shape
Thanks guys. This is all good to know. I'll talk to Ilya for sure.
I just ordered 2 new saddles...and plan on having ACME touch me up in Dec.
Not a bad idea to go back to your fitter once a year for a touch up

I thought this was rather weak - her only serious injury was after her career was over.
Looking for some suggestions from the hive on this.

I woke up Friday morning with a sore knee.  Specifically on the inside of my right knee.  Basic movement doesn't hurt, bike riding doesn't hurt, it doesn't seem tendon-related.  Almost feels like a bruise, just I see no swelling, nor any discoloration.

Took anti-inflammatories on Saturday.  Didn't seem to make much of a difference.

It seems that when there's side pressure on the joint, I notice it.  This happens when sitting cross-legged, or when I have knee bent as far as I can go.

What is this?  What can I do to solve the discomfort?
Regularly sitting cross legged?
If riding & living don't make it worse, I think you just wait it out. Sometimes I get weird injuries an it takes days to reproduce the (rare) motion that caused it.

Also, if it doesn't stop you from riding, is it even an injury? :)

Lots of circle time. ;)  (not so much these days)

Thanks for getting philosophical for me.

Edit
I’m soliciting recommendations for physical therapists, preferably who have some experience with cyclists or cycling themselves.
http://www.hellopopliteus.com/hello.html

Massage therapist who specializes in athletes (dancers and cyclists)

no candles or Enya - she’s all business
Thanks and I may check that out—but right now I’m looking for a physical therapist, not a massage therapist.
