Rode for the first time today - some muscle knotting in my back around the injury, but otherwise I'M BACK!!!!

Great to hear that you are doing OK
A quick survey of our experiences on the bike.

probably.  Never got it checked out.  I had school to attend.
I was in a bike shop does that count?
Did I ever tell you about the time a driver hit me over the head with a crowbar?that's Boston for you. Always wear your helmet!
^ do tell.

Actually, I need to change my vote.  It was such a fun concussion I forgot about it.  Durrrrrr

I would have thought it highly unlikely that someone would get a concussion while riding their bicycle.

I got one once when I fell off my bicycle though.

You've never seen me sprint.
Well, send Keith some love. On his way to meet me in greenpoint a guy pulled out of a parallel space and smashed him.

Looks like broken finger and some contusions and laceration. He, being Keith, aka kissena's Clint eastwood (the western hard ass, not the chair talking one), refuses an ambulance ride. But I talked him into getting checked out at Beth Israel later. He'll probably just try to realign his finger himself and go to work tho.

Oh, the bike is smashed too.

The inspiring part was all the sudden the driver had about 10 buddies crawl out of the woodwork to blame Keith, even though he was going straight and about 15mph and they didn't see it. Someone's injured and all you care about is your own skin. Nice.
Ugh.  If Clint er Kieth read the forum I'd wish him well.  Totally sucks.  Careful out there.

if he wasn't loading his revolver while riding no handed this wouldn't have happened.

feel better keith.
Heh, yeah. Keith went all Stalin, leader of the Lucareldi series, in the last race and took his hands off the bars to fiddle around and took out a car instead of 12 people.  Poor Ridley.

Arg, that honks!  Keith, take care of yourself.  Heal up well.
I may have gotten a concussion, I don't recall one of my crashes very well, but I was young, and I had a soft squishy brain.
Anyone ever had ulnar nerve issues, as in, long term?  I've had some hand numbness over the years, but today when I woke up, the area from my 2 littlest fingers, up through that portion of my palm, and up to my elbow has remained numb and tingly.

I looked up some stretches and whatnot, but it's not really getting better.
Jeff: I had some issues years ago on a way too small bike; all I can say is it takes a long time to get better.

I suspect you need to tweak your fit.
Carpal tunnel? How're your ergonomics?
For sure once; possibly two other times.
The for sure was in a Spring Series race in CP.  Was near the front of the pack along the west side of the park watching a team mate trying to get up the road, got out of the saddle to cover, then remember sitting on the curb being told an ambulance was waiting for me.  It seems I was unconscious for 1-2 min.  In true post concussive form, I refuse to go to a hospital and had a buddy plastic surgeon sew up my chin.  My fork broke in half.  (It was aluminum with a lot of miles on it.)  It is possible the quick release on by front wheel gave away, it had loosen on its own once before, and then tore the fork off.  Based on the laceration on my chin and the lack of any marks or damage to my helmet, I struck my chin first causing an upward force with the brain colliding in the top part of the inner skull - a contra-coup injury.  I was profoundly tired for 24 hours.  As far as I could tell, afterwards there was no cognitive or motor deficits after the fatigue wore off.  I was off the bike for about a week; two weeks for the next race.  You don't want to run a risk of a second heat injury for 7 - 14 days after an moderate concussion.
The other two times, there was no loss of consciousness (LOC), but both times (again) the helmet did not strike the ground.  One time was with Eric and JP where I clipped wheels with JP going up Clauseland.  It was low speed; the left side on my head just below the temple hit the ground and I had a headache after.  Maybe or maybe not a concussion.  The other time, I took a header and flipped over the bars when the non drive side crank arm broke (second time a non drive side crank arm broke in my life; trust me, any time it happens, you are going down hard; I replace parts a lot more frequently now even if it doesn't seem necessary).  The back of my head ht the pavement hard.  No LOC, but a headache.  A neurosurgeon felt it was likely a concussion.
Many of us likely have had concussions from sports.  Important thing is to give yourself some time to recover and avoid the risk of another concussion, especially in the short term.
yes.  crashed going down the big hill in CP July 2007.  Lost consciousness, last memory before accident was entering the park on 96th.  I must have woke up later that night in the hospital.  I was in the hospital for about 2 1/2 days.  CT Scan showed a small spot of blood on the brain.  I got 20 stitches around my left eye, the side corner was split open.  Still have a pretty nasty scar from it.  I was not wearing a helmet and I'm very lucky, but I did land on my face for the most part, so whatever caused the wreck caused it quick and without much warning.

the followup ct scans were fine, I still worry about long term damage though.
i got flying dropped kick by a wet street this morning in Portland. landed hard on my left side. thought i just had some knargly road rash but then i saw my left pinky. hmm, it hurt a bit, but it was pointing in the wrong direction. then my brain said hey dude, wtf, it should hurt more. to the ER!! I got xrays galore and the finger reset. they said the xrays came out well, but they are waiting for a surgeon to review before i come home. i may need a surgery at home to accelerate healing, otherwise i can't type with two hands, ride a bike, or lift for about 6 weeks. i am gonna probably stay out of the weight room for a bit anyway. All of my nurses are dudes, i keep expecting Marc or Jeff to walk in so i can commiserate. talking with Myles about supercross on the ph will have to make due. Did i mention being bored? So that my ego ends up being the biggest thing injured, anyone have a hand surgeon at home in NY they recommend ? what a vacation. oh yeah, I too am running for Treasurer. official stmt to be posted in that thread later today or tommorrow. See you all Sunday !
silly ipad , sorry for the lack of line breaks. i am totally playing the $500MM powerball this evening
I need surgery within 2 weeks. The doc here can do it Monday, but he suggests flying home and getting an NYC doc to do it so I can follow up with the same doc afterwards. I am going to try to call someone and get on their schedule asap

Sorry to hear about your spill, dude!  Take it easy and heal up.
Josh - I broke my hand a few years ago - a pinkie in fact - and also severed tendons.  Had hand surgery.  IM me if you still need a doctor - not sure if I still have the name (he was at NYU, I think), but I'll see if I can track down a name.  he did a good job.
Heal up quick.  Send pictures if they are gorey. :P
We want blood, destroyed bike parts, and at least one good ER shot.
i have gory photos of road rash plus one "oops its not suppossed to look like that pinky" . i'll upload tomorrow
Sorry to hear about your troubles Josh, I would recommend any surgeon at HSS.
get better Josh. get some TT bars for the computer trainer. I broke my wrist last year and that's how I was able to get through some of the winter!
