Injury: Sprains, Strains, Breaks & Insurance

The surgery was a success! I had to stay overnight at the hospital because they had to drain the internal bleeding out of my shoulder. I could not sleep as I was gazing at the great view of Randall Island from my window and watching the first season of Mad Men on Netflix. Once the nerve block medicine wore off, the pain was out of this world along with nausea due to the high concentration of oxycodone in my system. I am not doing that great at this moment, but at least I am walking around the apartment and hoping for the better things to come.
good to hear
You'll be doing 1-armed chinnups very soon - great to hear!
As per Jules request, I will post some pictures soon.
Great News Thierry! Yeah, you really shouldn't be taking that Oxycodone, I will... er... gladly dispose of it for you.
you can trust John

he has an AAD*

*ALSO A Doctor!
Yeah John, mix those with some Toohey's lager and you'll be on a war path.....
I heard the shitty news that Alan Zarembo from Ritte Racing broke his hip and femur in 6 places today while training in LA. My wife and his wife are best friends from way back. Some of you guys may know him.
Jesus! How?!?
Oh my GOD. That's serious stuff. Ryan Johnston's brother Kyle is on his team.
Broken femur used to rate just below or beside a heart attack on the EMS "shit to worry about" scale. Hope he's doing ok.
Terrible hope hes doing ok. I broke my femur all the way through the bone in 3 places, took a long long time to come back from that.
Thierry

Glad to hear your surgery was a success. I too have discovered the first season on Mad Men during my recuperation. I can see what all the buzz is about.

Speaking of disturbing cycling accidents, Velonews posted the following about three pro cyclists who were killed in an accident in South Korea:

Police say the speeding truck drove through the cyclist’s follow car, a minivan with their coach inside, and into the group from behind. The coach sustained a minor injury.

I find accidents like these really unnerving
It seems to me that this year there have a been a lot more crashes and many in our club have suffered bad falls and breaks. I don't recall it being this bad in previous years.

Speedy healing to all those in need !
Hi everyone I'm alive that's the good news the bad news is I tour my shoulder and broke 2 bones below The back of my neck. I'm in a lot of pain but that's what it takes to be a bike racer!
Ouch Nosson! Sorry to hear you had such an intimate meeting with the FBF tarmac. I went down there last myself last year, and luckily walked away with nothing more than a separated shoulder, gashed knee and some nice road rash on my face and back. But jeez, nothing compared to your inventory of hurt.....rest up, heal up, and you'll come back stronger. Hang in there...
you tore your shoulder? rotator cuff? which bones?
thats sucks man. eat lots of chicken soup...
Nosson,
U R tough!

So I just found out that this rash I developed, which I assumed was a virus, is actually an allergic reaction.

An allergic reaction to at least one of the two antibiotics I'm taking to kill off the two infections I picked up at the hospitals I visited.

Now I'm taking two more pills to counteract the allergic reaction.

I hope in a few days the stuff that is causing the allergic reaction cycles out.

At least I have my Slam That Stem top cap.

Im getting on my trainer today for at least 3 hours if anyone wants to come by and keep me company I have rollers and a few awsume cycling movies to watch Im not loosing any fitness over this!!!
The unfortunate experience that so many racers have had.
I lost my crash virginity yesterday and in the process laid down some skin on the dry gravely tarmac at Branch Brook at 40+kph.

Waking up to all sorts of pain this morning and searching the net for advice I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread that people can contribute to with remedies and survival tips post road rash acquisition on how to survive the coming days.

My wounds were cleaned on site in the ambulance and bandaged up, when I got home the bandages were all sticking to the wounds and hurt like hell to take off (not as bad as getting in the shower though).

After showering I cleaned them using an antiseptic wash then used a combination of "2nd skin" moist burn pads and "Tegaderm +pad" which Whitey had recommended to me and bandaged over those.

I went to Duane Read and another pharmacy and neither of them had any idea what Tegaderm was. Some how I lucked out buying a product called "Nexcare" by 3M which although has no reference to Tegaderm on the packaging once you open it up the individual pads have Tegaderm written on them, perfect.

From what ive read, drying out the wounds is a big nono. Keeping them moist seems to be the way to go using burn products for example.

Now 1 day in after an uncomfortable night sleep are you supposed to re clean the wounds before changing the bandage? The Tegaderm says its good for a few days and is waterproof but the "2nd Skin" is only good for a day at a time so needs changing.

Thanks in advance.
Whenever I've lost skin I've just used tegaderm and it's been good for a few days at a time. As you say it keeps the wound moist.

Oh yeah and Demerol, helps get rid of the pain and allow a decent night of sleep.

Surgical supplies stores (as opposed to pharmacies) are the places to get tegaderm, there are a few in the city, but I ordered my last batch from the interweb.
What works for the discolored darkened area after the wound heals? I always get dark patches where Ive had road rash
Ian where do you buy stuff online>?
Ashley,

There's a place in Williamsburg that has the tegaderm and burn stuff. It's on Graham, just north of Metropolitan I think. Salerno maybe. I assume it's still there. If $ is not an option, get the Duoderm. Better than tegaderm. And the fishnet/burn net gauze in nice. They will probably sell it to you by the foot.

Feel better.
Take antiinflammatories if you still hurt and apply cold pack (ice) to any swollen areas. This will reduce pain and promote healing.
Bandages can stay on for 2 days. But don't let them dry out and stick.
Keep the 2nd skin/tegaderm/duoderm on until skin has been replaced. These days, there is no reason to have a scab (except perhaps price and annoyance of changing these bandages)
apart from cleaning the wound every time you change dressings, with peroxide or alcohol, you should also apply antibiotic ointment (polysporin, neosporin etc...) if is hasn't scabbed.

You underestimate the power of peeling off scabs. So gross and satisfying.

Clean the wound yes. Peroxide or alcohol, not so much. Too irritating to the skin. Good old fashioned soap and water just fine for maintenance cleaning. -Nurse Marc
