Full field.  110 starters.  78 finishers.

TL/DR: 58th.  Average speed 27.1.

The day smelled like breakaway.  In many respects, this was good to watch.  As someone without teammates.  Not so good.

Breaks started forming on the first lap.  I was happy that I had the legs to counter-attack.  All the same, on several of my counters, I had passengers who didn't want to pull because they had teammates ahead.  

Turns out, I probably shouldn't have worried about the early moves.  Veselka had the KoM Jersey and they were riding to keep it.  I should have just shadowed Sal, the guy in dots, for the early part of the race.

Interesting to watch: Lynn Murray of Ride Ya Bike was in the old man's jersey and he had an even older guy, Tony Taylor (ex-Kissena) guiding him all day, keeping Lynn in position.  

Also interesting: The yellow jersey, Jerry Kapko, and the green, Christophe Palazzi were both looking pretty average, letting gaps open and falling back a good bit.  Also oddly, neither seemed to have teammates, whereas they've had them in past races.  

The winning break went with less than three laps to go, which is a bit late, but had two representatives from the strongest team in the race, Foundation.  The foundation rider won, with the field coming in 16 seconds behind.

I was up for trying to mix in the field sprint, but the left side of the road, where I was, felt particularly sketchy, and I had to stop my push to move up several times because riders were coming from behind me, riding through the jogger's lane, than swinging back in.  3/4 of the way up the hill I decided I wasn't in good enough position and sat up.  Probably should have ridden in with the field for the training.

Must have happened about a quarter of the way up the hill.  Bad enough that the ambulance came onto the course and was parked there for at least three or four laps.  

I saw Jeff Condon walking his bike up the hill with a flat after we passed the site.  Don't know if he was involved at all.

That must have been the second crash, as the videographer passes the ambulance on the hill.  Looks like it happened pretty far back.

1st crash on the hill with the ambulance  was from the Cat 5 race.

2nd crash is in the video 300ish meters from the line as the 3/4 race approached the finish, would eventually require an ambulance for the dude that caused it.

Only watched the last couple of minutes of the 3/4 race video, but you can see @ErikPfiffner and myself riding together and staying out of trouble as we approach the hill. Erik would crack the top 20, I would finish 20 something.

That crash is quite unfortunate, as the dude that caused it is at best sprinting for 20th -- stupid move. The race felt quite safe otherwise. 

At 41.8 km/h average, the 3/4 race turned out way faster than it felt. 

@Jeff Condon and @niallsmart would also start but flatted out. They were honestly looking sharp and strong up to then.

Another fun moment was the yellow jersey getting a rear flat, some random dude gives him their bike, he gets back in the race and sprints for points at the finish.

There is another on board video that captures the crash more clearly from the right side. That Good Guys guy seems to have taken himself and several other people down with him.

Hi all! great seeing everyone yesterday morning and Congrats to Michael on his 2nd place in the 3-4!

Quick cat 5 race recap: Kissena had a big group at the start, (maybe 11 people?) It was nice to meet some new faces and see the usual ones. The race was fast from the start with a few of the top 10 finishers working on the front throughout,(I finished with pr's on all of the 3 and 4 lap pp segments) Like usual, a few breaks tried to go, but would get shut down immediately. I tried to go away with someone from the Verrazano team at the start of the flats (maybe lap 3) with no luck, I fell back in the group and was hoping to have a moment of recovery when I heard the marshall's whistles at the bottom of the hill. A group of us thought the race was being neutralized, but unfortunately, they were just signaling to stay away from the crash in the 3/4...  We got separated from the front group and I had to put in a nice effort to get back on with everyone. 
On the final lap, I was in second wheel at the bottom of the hill, trying to convince a rider from ride ya bike to get in front. Andrew pulled up to lead the pack up the hill and I followed him up. It felt very good to be going around the final turn 1, 2 but in hind sight, I think we were a little over excited. Ideally, I think we should have been a couple of wheels back. Andrew pulled off the front and I was pulling for the final stretch.. I was expecting an attack to come at any moment, so I just stayed on the gas. I started sprinting at about the same spot as the last race, and still no one was passing me... Visions of winning back to back crossed my mind, until the group passed me just before the line... I finished 7th. 

I think this will be my last race this year as we still have lots to do for my wedding in September. But am already looking forward to start next year in the 4's!

I'm looking at this video and thinking did someone attack? Where's the break? There's got to be a group up the road. This race is like watching a Harley Davidson hog ride around Prospect park

On the last lap today there was a bad crash right behind me. Scary stuff. Helmets cracking, metal snapping and god knows else. Made me think about my mortality as those of us who were spared headd up the final hill. Anyone know what happened to those people involved?

From what I've heard everyone came away relatively okay.  Just some gnarly road rash and broken bikes.

Super disappointing race for this guy. Got stuck behind a crash on the first lap and my chain came off. I got it back on pretty quickly but it was too late and the race was too far up the road for a solo chase back on by that point. Rode back to the start watched a lap and headed north for a ride. 

Seems there were two crashes at the races Saturday, but opposed to what other posts suggest, they were relatively innocuous, appears everyone walked away fine. 

A definitely crazy and dangerous moment was the idiot that left a citibike in the middle of the road as the 3/4 field approached. Michael posted the video in slack. I believe the police was called post race.

Else, here's a race report

• Sold out field. Last L&C cup race of 2021
• For most of 2021 I've been 2nd on the Cat 3/4 45+ competition 
• Kept it on the down low, very petite committee
• Heading into the race, it was a long shot, but still mathematically possible for me to win
• Matt and Michael were in on it, ready to domestique #firah!
• Terrence Chioffi led the 45+, was keenly aware I had a shot -- a small shot: I would have to finish 1st or 2nd and he would need to finish 5th or less. 
  
• Was super fun to chase each other and ride on each other wheels, forcing both Terrence and me to stay close to the front
• Kevin looked super sharp, well positioned in the last couple of laps
  
• Micheal also looked mega sharp, specially attentive to the front and my whereabouts
• Matt unfortunately was behind an early crash. He would go on to ride 80km past the GWB haha
• The race was basically fast. Enough that we caught the 1/2/3 twice. We got neutralized both times. Forgot to ask Charlie, but I think for 2021 they just wont let fields pass each other. Getting neutralized sucks. 
• Even with the two neutralizations, speed was 41.8 km/h avg.
• Last lap, as we pass the zoo into the last time up hill, Terrence appears, riding right next to me, making it clear the gap I need wont happen. 
• We both laughed as I said "ok..., so..., I'm just gonna concede now..., good job" and both sprinted balls to the wall full blast up the hill
• Terrence slowly rode away as my legs exploded, my two fast twitch fibers looking at each other "WTF, dude, OUCH!"
• Bernardus Van Klinken, would overtake me, eventually finishing 2nd in the overall 45+
• Still: Podium!!
• Celebrate the small victories.
• Found comfort too: According to Strava, tied my best time up the hill, and from the KOM to the finish
• It was Charlie's penultimate race. The end of an era. His last race will be the Kissena Classic October 2nd

Congrats on the podium Eloy!

Said to hear Charlie I. is finally hanging it up. Might the club send a gift to Charlie to thank him, and all the Issendorfs, for all the love they've given to Kissena and  Brooklyn racing (he also ran the FBF series for many years).

Thought starters: could be some lux thing that we engrave--Campy corkscrew or Silca ratchet set? Or something jokey like some vintage KCC item we all sign. Thoughts?
