That seemed like a pretty dramatic change of line for no good reason.
Ok, I want to play....

I think that the Major Taylor guy looks to his right and starts preparing for the upcoming left turn by trying to swing to the outside/right before taking the corner at speed, but in that moment the rider in front of him slightly drifts to left and hijinks ensue. Bad timing, especially in how early he tried to get in position to take that turn.

I feel like it's ok to look around now and again, but keep it brief, and always be looking ahead when you decide to alter your line.
@Vlad: great work on the new PR!  Looks like you found one of the latest Training Peaks features:

http://support.trainingpeaks.com/personal-edition/threshold-notifications.aspx

I saw they are hiring for a UX developer, so perhaps they are finally ready to take that crusty old tech and make it current?

One can only hope :)

OK, this is getting all Antonioni Blow-Up...
But if I "zoom in, track right, stop" I see dudes in front of blue guy getting all sideways, white helmet to the right does a huge sweeper right to left (look closely and you'll see him magically appear on left) blue guy reacts by chucking on the brakes, Major Taylor gets more overlap and can't react. Classic circus clown action.

Ok so I haven't been to Floyd in a while and I am going to try to come out tonight. I have never been for a Thursday night Mangoseed, and haven't driven there yet (but will today to avoid the evening 16 mile return trip - night time on Flatbush doesn't sound like my cup of tea) -so I have questions :)

What time are the races ?
Is the start finish at the same spot as Kissena FBF races ?
Do you pre-reg or is it just show up with cash ?

I checked out http://wsunited.org/Upcoming_Races.html
but it does not have a lot of details.

thanks
What time are the races ?
Cat5 race starts at 6:30(ish); try to get there before
Cat3/4 and Pro/1/2/3 start at 7

Yes

Show up with $20

It's the short (3-turn) course.

It rules.

See you there.

Hey Al has my fender. Can one of you guys grab it from him tonight?
Good luck with that - knowing Al, he's probably using it as a shim to prop up his bed by now.
Results?
McGee and Schmalz stuck an awesome break. Nosson, Aly, Dan DNF—me pack fodder.

Johnny Wrongway is NEVER pack fodder.  He just rests at unexpected times, occasionally...

i fucking MEGALOLD at this, having spent all weekend in his foul bachelor hovel . . . his floor is sandier than some of the beaches i've been to
fyi: Al B. won floyd tonight out of a two man, 5 lap break

that is a Big Deal . . . true rite of passage for NYC racers . . . give him a pound
Megalol?
Is that like a humongolol or an uberlol?
where exactly does it stand vis a vis the gargantulol?
Yeah, Al's W was badass, don't know where that second kick came from—amazing to watch.

Correction and apologies: Aly did not DNF. He also made a valiant attempt to bridge to McGee break.
The Mineola guys and I tried pretty hard to bring the break back last couple of laps. But it was up and down and attacky which put a few guys into the red and made the bunch averse to coming through—great way to disrupt a chase team United!

Vlad rode strong and finished ahead of a few guys, nice to see him progress from getting dropped to hammering a sprint.

And yeah, that's one of those damned nails.
Look who showed up tonight.
Am I the only one who doesn't get the lumberjack beard with shaved legs combo?
^ Just returned from Tour de Ashram's? ^
Malcolmson said, "In terms of learning, the pre-race plan as I understood it was for Jeff
to "stick to my wheel like glue" for a lead out in the last lap, I think
the big effort put the kabosh on that a bit"

This comment reminds me of the last 1/2/3 race we all did a few weeks back. If the plan is to have juice for a solid end of race leadout/sprint effort, then you absolutely, have to set yourself up to have the legs/lungs to get that done. That means, you need to be fully recovered from your last effort before your final effort.

I know this sounds obvious, but I think guys are getting excited about aggressive racing--nothing wrong with that, in general--but if you are putting in hard efforts that aren't geared toward success in a sprint, with 2, 3 or 4 laps to go in a race, then I think we need to be realistic about what can be achieved in the final dash for the line.
Fully agreed. John tried to get me up to the winning move not three laps before the sprint. I was toast when I got back, which is why I was not glued to his wheel. Which is exactly what you're talking about.
@ Marc, we discussed the plan pre-race. My understanding was Jeff would come to me for lead-out. Ryan, Andrew and Jeff changed the plan. I've raced Floyd enough to know that it's very hard to nail a headwind lead-out, the problem was more to do with timing than having legs left—the train started too early. These guys were on the windward side of the bunch from me. I was sheltered and took a good stab at a late attack, another rider blew himself up to bridge his teammates up to me. Jeff and I tried bridging because if we'd gotten across we could have won (people don't remember 2nd right?) We were there to win the race, and I'd much prefer to try bridge (even if we might've been punching above our weight) than drag the bunch up. We just got a bit too excited and didn't gel together both in the sprint and in the bridge attempt.

One thing we discussed post race: there were a few times we had guys on the front pulling hard (before the break). Golden rule is: Never take a pull at the front unless there’s good reason to do so (like protecting a jersey).

@John I really think what happened that night was as much a problem of communication as it was of us "Ryan, Andrew and Jeff changed the plan." In my mind I didn't change the plan, I was sticking exactly to it. I can't speak for the others, but in my mind "the plan" was different than in yours.

Now, its true that on the penultimate stretch, Whitey, our sprinter, was at the BACK. So I went and got him and dropped him off at the front, where he could find you. I don't think there was anything else for me to do in that situation. But after that, I did exactly what I thought I was supposed to do: be the first lead out guy. I thought I'd take us much of the way across, then Andrew or someone else would go next, and John would blast around the turn in the final lead out with Whitey in tow.

That's not a divergence from what we discussed, in my mind - its just that I don't know FBF nearly as well as John so I got on the front too early. Mistake. But I don't recall anyone telling me explicitly "cool your jets until 250m from the turn and then start the lead out." If I hear that I promise you that's what I'll do. I love playing helper donkey. But I have to understand my instructions.

My point is that we have to talk to each other during races; when I've raced with William and JP they never shut up. That's a good thing. Our group that night did not communicate on the road at all. It's a problem in general. We spend hours making plans on the message board but in races we don't talk to each other. I recall a couple of times recently trying to talk to teammates to ask what they wanted from me and feeling like the signal was "don't talk to me right now." I might be misinterpreting, but that was my perception.

I think John knows FBF better than anyone; so when we go out there, we should put him in charge. But John, you've gotta be bossy and assertive, and everybody else, you gotta listen to him and make it your job to constantly check in about what he wants.

Fair comments Ryan, I can see how my post comes off as a bit of a finger pointer. There shouldn't be any confusion re the plan on anyones part. I'll get there earlier Tuesday so we can hatch a more detailed strategy related to the conditions and the competition we need to be marking. But it's safe to say that Rahael, McGee and Schmalz will be trying to stick a break seeing as it's worked so well for them in the past. As per your suggestion, let's say we try over-communicate and ride together in the pack as much as possible. Looking forward to it.
anyone up for the 1/2/3 on 7/3?  I'm going out to do some hammering.

I'll be there with the 3/4's.

You know it.
I feel great. Anyone want to keep an eye on Luka while I race? I smell a V.
Doh, can't make it.
