The Annual Super Bowl Century

After five glorious years of winter fun I will sadly not be around for this years debacle. I will be in Texas. I will hold a Texas edition for anyone who happens to pass through Austin during that weekend. It will be warmer, and there will be more climbs and they will be steeper. Someone should step in and make sure the ride happens here in NYC in the tradition of past years. Hope you are blessed with good weather. Keith
I am volunteering to lead this spectacle, having been on all but the 2010 edition. One year, it never got about 23-degrees Fahrenheit. Another, it went into the 40s.

It's simple. But not easy. We'll roll out with the 9am Kissena ride and split where our route runs onto Route 303 between Sparkill and Blauvelt.

From there, we'll work our way to the Conklinville orchard, then into Harriman via Calls Hollow Road. We'll take Seven Lakes Drive to Bear Mountain. Bear might or might not be plowed. If clear, we climb. From there, we'll take 9W most of the way back.

There is one planned stop, that in Tompkinsville.

While there will be a no drop policy in effect, make sure to prepare well, eat and drink regularly during the ride. There will be a bail point at the Orchard, where you can turn back, and another at Bear Mtn, where you can choose to ride to Garrison to take Metro-North home. It's good to know the schedule and have your rail pass handy (this is $5 and good for life; if you can't produce one, the conductor will sell you one on the train).

I'm planning on doing this ride one way or another. We'll start with the traditional Kissena ride and turn off around Sparkill.

Unless it rains and rains and rains, I doubt Perkins will be open, but there's only one way to know for sure. Join me.

JP
I've been aching to get on the road so I'll be there. Have reacquainted myself with cross country skiing. Muttontown preserve is a beautiful place to ski or snowshoe if anyone has the equipment and is close enough. See you Sunday!
Patrick,

Where is the entrance to the preserve?
Tom

About a block west of 106 on northern blvd. Follow the signs for the preserve.
Thanks Patrick!
JP - where is Tompkinsville ? I tried to google map it but got Staten Island. Is it about half way ?

Is two bottles enough to there ?

thanks!
Josh, I meant tompkins cove. Tompkinsville is indeed on Staten Island.

I think two bottles will be enough. But do bring food. I recommend trying to eat one bar or the equivalent an hour.
Sooooo....

How'd it go? Ride report please!
I'd love someone else to chime in on this...Patrick?

Of this entire club, only two of us went the distance. Y'all missed a great time, at least I think so.
Okay, the 6th edition of the superbowl ride started with a group of 6 on a beautiful and relatively warm day at the GWB. Waited until 9:20 (just in case). JP maintained a high tempo. Perhaps because of the tempo or other plans, Greg, Joshua, and Nathaniel turned off at Sparkill. David Stokes turned off towards Bradley hill a little further. I was wary of going all the way to Bear, but needed more than a 2.5 hour ride, so JP and Ipressed on.

In the end, JP and I reached bear mountain and back. I was okay for the first three hours, but by that point there was no turning back. My lack of long rides since before cyclocross season was starting to bite me in the ass. By the fourth hour my back was killing me, by the fifth I was dying. Shoot me if I change my bike fit significantly again before a big ride... And remind me not to give blood in the days leading up to the longest ride... As long as I can remember. (I figure if blood doping helps than blood donation hurts, right?). JP was his usual patient self on the climbs - thanks!

Back to the ride: We climbed up the orchard and up the never-ending gate hill road into Harriman state park. As I was cresting gate hill road I felt a tap on my thigh which for a millisecond I thought was the car I heard behind me. I was surprised to see Dan Chabanov in his Mengoni kit with a big grin on his face. He and Al had taken the same route. We rode with them a little here and there as Dan was taking photographs.

Harriman was awesome as the lakes were frozen over and beautiful. People were ice fishing and there were tons of people on snow shoes. I want to come back with the wife and kids. Finally, it is worth noting that aside from being wet the road conditions were great. Fenders were a must. Perkins drive was closed but that didn't stop JP from leading us over the gate since we could see the road had been plowed. We tried to climb up but there were too many patches of ice making climbing (and especially descending) too hairy to continue.

We rode back from Bear along 9W with only a quick stop at the cove deli. Total time ended up being 5:45 for just under 90 miles (I parked at the GWB) with about 5500 feet of climbing. You guys missed a great ride. Hope to see you there next year!

Patrick
...time to start thinking about this year's Super Bowl ride....
I would be down to do it this year.
Me too
I'm trying for the hall pass...
I've got the hall pass; I'll have to cap it at 5 hours though. BB at 8am?
i'll be there, 8 am BB. will likely have to turn around after piermont, though nyack may be in the cards. need to be back in the slope by 12:30-1ish.
I am up for the 8AM BB contingent with a turn around to get back to Brooklyn before 1pm.
Thinking of making it. most likely will.
I will cross-post to the Kissena Sunday Ride and will see all of you somewhere along the way to the GWB.
The super bowl ride can be insane.

I think Joe W set the record for the longest overall ride, by doing the ride plus riding to and from his home in Bay Ridge. The coldest ride started at 14 degrees and went up to a balmy 21 or 23. The course has had to change due to closed roads.

Keith likes climbs and backroads,so expect those.

Do not expect to stop for food or drink until several miles after Bear Mountain, probably Tompkins Cove. Considering the overall length of hte ride, just try to eat every hour and bring enough food for at least five hours of riding.

For those who think they might want to bail, you can also ride across the Bear Mountain Bridge and ride to either Garrison or Peekskill Metro-North stops those places. stops about once an hour. The Garrison ride is easier. Peekskill has some excellent descending, but also some climbing.

For those concerned about the distance, I recommend taking the train to 178th street rather than riding through the city.

We're often back at the GWB around 3pm.
Okay I made a cue sheet of sorts. Hopefully the attachment thing will work. You can view the lame ass map my ride file in two sections.

here: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/67328318

that\\\'s the first half starting from the GWB

and here:http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/67336058

This is the second part starting from the Bear Mountain Bridge circle.

Weather looks good.
Okay I hate this thing. It would not take my excel file.

I will try the yahoo thing

Keith
Go to the yahoo groups then go to files on the menu on the left and scroll down to super2012.xls

Keith
I will be there. Ready to suffer.
I added what I think the ride might be into map my ride to later convert to a GXP file and put on my garmin in a case I got dropped ...

I dont know if this is 100% but I figure it would be enough to get home

Chris,
A+ for effort.

A few corrections. DO NOT take Palisades Parkway to Bear Mtn Bridge before starting to climb to Perkins Drive. This is illegal. People have been stopped. (if you're riding to the Bear Mtn bridge and need to get there fast, it might be worth the risk) You take the first exit on the parkway, which takes you to Perkins in less than a mile rather than the way you go.

I don't think Keith's ride takes you in to Rockland Lake Park for a tour of the Lake. It's a cool little detour, but he has the ride taking 9W to the climb, rather than going around first.

You also missed the all-important Tompkins Cove Deli Stop. It's the first and possibly only official food stop of the ride. It's on 9W after Bear Mtn. You need to go a bit further down 9W before turning off onto Mott Farm Road.
Too quick on send. My apologies.

I wrote Keith and he just got back to me. Here are my q's and his a's

JP to Keith

I have a few questions.

1. Are you planning on taking the Palisades Interstate Parkway to the
Bear mtn bridge and then going up Bear?  It can be done, but I was
stopped by cops once and I've heard it happens.  Maybe not with a
large group.

2. Is a stop planned at tompkins' cove or anywhere?

3. Any word on whether the bridge that was allegedly undermined on
Tiorati Brook in the summer storm has been repaired enough to ride?

Keith to JP

We did the route 6 before so I didn’t think it was an issue. If so then we’ll skip that way and just double back start from 9w the bear climb.

The map my ride has food signs. The Cove Deli is the major stop. Others will be as needed. Maybe a quickie at the orchard but the only R&R is at Cove or a short one in Piermont.

Bridge? I have no idea. Plan B is to just take 7 Lakes from 106 over to Bear. Just thought I’d throw in the Tiorati climb for the hell of it. Not entirley necessary.

Keith
answer to JP's question about the bridge...

Sarah and I went hiking and drove over that bridge about 1 month ago. I'm not 100% sure it's the one JP is referring too, but Sarah did mention that it was out the previous month when she attempted to cross it and on this day, it was open.
sounds great!
