When I go over the GWB or to a race I bring my ID, insurance cards, credit card, etc. etc.

What I really don't understand is where a misdemeanor occurs on a bicycle. V&T violations are violations. Thus even if you don't have id but Id yourself, I can't see it being proper to arrest and detain you.

Riding on the sidewalk can now result in a misdemeanor charge in NYC.

@Wump I had a persistent fantasy about taking a transalp from one end of Nepal to the other.  Then I got 

Oakland CA city jail. 8 hrs in a holding cell with a bunch of other perps and a toilet in the corner. 'What are you in for?' Cheese sandwiches handed through the bars and cigarettes rolled between cells. I was overjoyed to get bailed out around midnight. I really did not want to spend the night. Charges  later dismissed.

I'm not an attorney and I'm not giving legal advice, so don't rely on anything I say.  But it seems that in NY, you can be arrested for traffic violations.  A police officer can arrest you for a traffic violation so long as the officer has "reasonable cause to believe that such person has committed such offense in his or her presence."  N.Y. Penal § 140.10(1)(a).  See also  N.Y. Penal § 140.10(2) (limiting the area in which an officer can arrest you for a "petty offense"); N.Y. Crim. Proc. Law § 1.20(39) (defining "petty offense" as "a violation or traffic infraction").  The officer need not actually witness the violation because "'[r]easonable cause' as used in CPL 140.10 is the equivalent of 'probable cause,' i.e., 'information which would lead a reasonable person who possessed the same expertise as the officer to conclude under the circumstances that a crime is being or was committed.'"  People v. Bothwell, 261 A.D.2d 232, 233 (1st Dept. 1999).

That is more or less how I ended up in jail. If it can happen in Berkeley, it can happen in NY!

stokes is hardly the only one.  nearly 40% of white males have been arrested by age 23.  http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-01/uosc-sho010314.php.  not everyone's story of police interaction begins with something as morally neutral as running a red light, so people have varying degrees of interest in discussing their time on the receiving end of law enforcement.

bologna sandwiches and small cartons of milk in the lower manhattan tombs.  assuming a mexican jail bagel isn't exactly bagel hole quality, i think we'll call the culinary options a push.

How have all of you been to jail and me, the biggest dirtbag on the club, has managed to avoid it (outside of paramedic work)? I guess I pay for it by getting run over all the time.

AA dumped all the contents out of the bags I had jammed into the bike case when they "inspected" it on the way back.  But I got away without an additional charge when it checked in at 49.5lbs after stuffing it with all the extra supplies we accrued in Cali.  #weaselingthroughlife
