Remove the cars and you can both remove the lights and re-engineer the ped crossings. At some of the highest ped traffic zones, there are underpasses nearby and the paths into the park can be routed to take people to these places. Of the four places getting treatments, three of them are near underpasses. Sheep meadow at 68th is the only one not near an underpass.
Re-engineering is a long-term solution that doesn't need oversight, doesn't need barriers moved, and doesn't need crossing treatments. It will make movement easier, faster, and safer.
They should also direct people entering the park at Columbus circle to an underpass just north of there rather than taking them to the park road. The columbus circle entrance was designed for vehicles. And there are the people entering at 7th ave, and there's an underpass just east of there.

...and in spite of damning video evidence the city's bureaucracy basically throws up their hands and says,"Sorry, we can't do anything about that!"

Adding to the levity of this thread...
On Saturday, I rode up to Westchester to find some new roads. When I was in Upper Manhattan, a guy pulls alongside me and slows down. I look, don't recognize the guy, smile, and keep riding. I hear his window come down. I've been yelled at before, but whatever, I know I'm riding safely.
The guy yells out, "Ok out here today? Not too cold? I used to ride at Kissena. I still have the bike, but I'm too lazy. Keep riding. It's good."

Question for the group. Have you registered your bike(s) with the police? If there was an easy opportunity, would you?
I was asked if folks with fancy bikes do this.
I haven't thusfar, though I keep records of bike serial numbers and have photographs of all my bikes as well as embed identifying information in hard-to-spy spaces.
Wondering about others. Anyone do it, have a bike stolen, and had the registration ease recovery?

No police registration for me. Frankly, I can't imagine it being useful for anything. I doubt the police follow up on stolen bikes anyway.

I have apartment insurance, which covers bikes. I keep receipts which have serial numbers on them and pictures. If something is stolen (twice so far), then one has to file a police report. Then I grit my teeth and prepare myself to get ignored at the precinct and generally treated like crap. And that's what happens to a more than middle aged white guy in the Village. I think the only people cops show respect to are their commanding officers.
But maybe I am getting away from the point of your question.

you know that flimsy wire fence on the section of riverside park we take up from the path to RSD? Watch out-- someone had peeled a bit back and it knocked me square down while out on a ride with @Bruce this AM. Thankfully no real injuries--just a bit banged up on the shoulder and hip-- but completely invisible in the shadows.
As always be careful out there, and thanks to Bruce for making sure all limbs/hands etc were workin'.

Dave, I'm glad you're doing ok, and that the bike came out of it ok also.
It was a piece of the fencing put up, after the tunnel, you go up the climb, onto the flat area to the roundabout where you take that left downhill and instead of heading straight down, which brings you back to the bike path, you make that right and a slight uphill towards 'dog alley' where the dog walkers look at you in horror.
A slab of that black fencing was hanging loose, waiving over the pavement, but with the shadows, and the sun coming down through the trees and the fence, it blended in perfectly. It caught Dave's front wheel.
I bent it back on itself so it wasn't flipping out towards the pavement, but certainly another piece could be sticking out like that. Looked like someone unhooked it in order to get into the area fenced off for grass reseeding.
The ride home today had the sun directly eye level and made everything difficult to see, in general, which makes for difficult vision.
Heal up, Dave, you'll be on the road again soon.

yeah... stifffffff. trainer season is officially upon us I guess.
So yes, on that section-- do NOT ride close to the edge/fence-- i think I was about the distance of a bench + pedestrian, and it still caught me.
