That's Angela. She's a hoot. She studies genetic basis for various hair loss diseases (as I guess the article describes. She is very proud of her hair! I'm sure she messed it up on purpose for the camera.
We worked together briefly and I had a Turkish postdoc with incredibly dense and fast-growing head and beard hair. She was always very jealous of him.

I asked if it was an ironic commentary of the NYPD and Bloomturd's non-investigation of cyclists getting mowed down approach, but she said it was just bc people in Lycra do stupid stuff. While that's true, we had a good convo about how it's not that simple and she's a cyclist. So it's FUNNY!!! Tire tracks are a nice detail.

I saw JP in the televised marathon coverage. He was trailing the winning female when she turned back into the park at Columbus Circle.

I was wondering about that. Lots of riders (some escorting athletes, others looking like supervisors just watching the race ) with no helmets (and headsets).

They changed the headsets this year. In previous years, there was a metal spring and a velcro strap. the spring was worn behind your head and the strap on top--it could be adjusted, somewhat, to fit through the helmet openings. This year, a single metal spring. While I love my orange helmet, the threading in previous years was fairly uncomfortable. I probably should have worn a hat to be a little less obtrusive.
Funny thing about Columbus circle. I was waiting htere to both call out the final women's elite runners and make sure other cyclists didn't go into the park. While my bike was leaned against a barrier, a gust came and blew my bike onto its right side. the force on the rear derailleur popped the cable out of the pinch bolt.
BTW, I felt like I barely saw the race. coming off the Verrazano, there were two in the lead. I watched them until the leader dropped second place on the Willis Ave bridge, and then I saw the eventual winner pass the longtime leader. The winner had the oddest gait I've ever witnessed in an elite runner.

that was in 1990. he served his time - got out - and was elected to the D.C. City Council and, eventually, re-elected as Mayor again!
Difference being - Marion Barry was a widely loved dude among the majority of voting Washingtonians, whereas Rob Ford is a total dick.

Side note - I was in grad school in DC throughout all of that, and had a job waiting tables. Barry, in fact, held a fundraiser at the restaurant during his city council run.
Around that time, I'd ask co-workers at my restaurant who lived in SE and NE DC (read: the non-tourist parts of town) why Barry was so popular despite his drug problems. Every person I talked to had a story about how Barry had helped a cousin get a job, or fixed a pothole on their street, or forced through a new bus route that helped an aunt get to the market. pure local patronage politics, sure, but stuff that people felt improved their lives in some small (or big) ways.

While we're on drugs and the topic of crack's whackness, the deadliest drug in terms of overdose deaths is prescription painkillers. More than cocaine and heroine. Maybe crack ain't so whack after all...

@Brendan it's complicated because unless there is a note it's often hard to distinguish an overdose from something intentional.
People have been making (and probably abusing) drugs since at least 10k BC though; I don't imagine there is an end in sight.

Critical thing for acetaminophen seems to be the narrow therapeutic window - there just isn't much room for error before the consequences become catastrophic.

The bad thing about that episode was the numbers. While the gov't approval process and history of the big pharma infighting was interesting, they kept harping on the "deadliest OTC prescription pain med" angle and not the deadliest OTC med in general. What, only like 150 died annually? Sorry, but that's not very many, considering the millions that use the med. Yeah, the window is narrow, but people have their skin slough off and go blind using ibuprofen too. Doesn't mean it doesn't have overwhelmingly beneficial uses.
