Plans we typically send out to a job shop that specializes in whatever material we need, and charges us in volume of material used.

With a perfectly intact copy of what I need to have made I cab either blueprint it or shoot it w a 3d camera. (I borrow both techmologies from friends). We get charged a small job fee and boom. Done.

But in this application? F it. Makes no sense.

Solution? Buy real shit.

Myles, that is correct. That is right now. But in 15 seconds, you'll be able to do it all on your smartphone. Technology is rapidly accelerating. You've got to surf that wave bro. 3D printing will soon change everything (read the way we build homes, cakes, clothing, etc...).

No its true. Where I'm put off is durability. I can 3d print.....a 1932
Alfa romeo 6c crankshaft.

But I don't know how it works. How fast it can spin until it goes "boom"
and shit starts flying off it. And sadly there's really only one way to
tell.

Besides. Print all the 3d shit you want. When your 3million dollar car
goes south and you make a bunch of parts for it you will still need someone
to install them....making shit is relatively easy.

Making shit work not so much.

Yes, I know the technology is moving fast and 3d cameras are becoming
cheaper. Again in that segment if my job it will change the way we do
business and remove the term "unobtanium" from our dictionary. There will
always be people that will pay a premium for NOS.

My point however is this. For this particular application to expend the
effort for a machine replaceable at any Kmart for under 100$......don't
make no sense.

Autodesk CEO bro keynoted about the power off addititive (3D printing) and subtractive (CNC) manufacturing in the very near future. These machines will become more capable and available as momentum builds. Materials will become better and more accessible alongside that. Next thing you know, everyone's got one like they did with the microwave oven in the 80's.

The cruel irony in all of this is that when these things become ubiquitous and proven enough to ensure that your Alpha Romeo 6c crankshaft if a perfect (probably better/lighter/whatever) fit, nobody will give a shit. Your craft is only as relevant as the time you live in. Live the moment. Taste the rainbow. Be a fucking hero for chrissakes.

I whole heartedly embrace the possibility of a TV sized printer replacing a
foundry, and machine shop. And its potential to reduce waste.

For static parts made of rudimentary materials I'm onboard. Woo goo I can
make one off dashboard vents for 275 gtbs for peanuts. And fast.

But for high end applications with ridiculously high loads and incredible
repetitive stress I'm going to need to see a LOT more data. Till then its
the old fashioned way.

Oddly enough our craft is still relevant and frequently practiced on things
made before your grandparents were born. It will always remain relevant.
As fewer appreciate it more covet and idolize it.
