After deflating Jeff's tubular wheelset at ToC and looking to see if he was glued up well, at his request, I noticed that the base tape was coming away from the tire at the edges. Being the hard man that he is, he decided to ride the wheelset in the time trial despite this.
In any case, this is the stuff you need to reattach the base tape to the tire:
I have used it in repairing tubulars and reattaching base tape, it's quite effective... also good if you run tubulars with thin sidewalls (dugast, veloflex) that have latex coatings as "protection."
@Stephane: I've ridden my share of chamois, and I actually freakin love the bright orange "divoted" Champ Sys chamois. It looks like cheap crap, and honestly I kinda felt ripped off when I first unwrapped my inaugural Kissena kit shipment. But it's the most comfortable chamois I've ever ridden. I've never had the privilege of experiencing Assos or Rapha, but I've straddled me some Castelli, Pearl Izumi, Nike, Vermarc (close second -- awesome shit), Sugoi, two pairs of Lance Armstrong's used bibs (no joke), and other weird Italian taint pads. I don't know what's in the Champ Sys "summer" bibs, but whatever they're sewing into the regular "poor man's" bib keeps my critical region in proper working order.
Do the "summer" bibs have the bright orange "divoted" chamois? What do others think about the Kissena chamois situation?
Regarding the chamois- I just spent two 5-hour back-to-back days mountain biking in our team kit this past weekend. By the middle of day 1, wearing the old-style chamois, I developed a painful suppurating butt goblin. On day 2, I wore the new summer weight shorts with the improved golf-ball-textured chamois. All I can tell you is that while the effulgent chancre continued to call attention to itself throughout the second day, the painful pustule didn't get markedly worse with the new chamois despite the decidedly damp weather and the technical terrain. I'm not certain what conclusion one can draw from this experience other than what we already know, i.e., that the old chamois was ripe for improvement. Next time I do this race, I'll reverse the chamois order and apprise all of the results.
So besides me looking sort of puffy and waterlogged in this picture, I can't help but to notice that the shoulder "kissena" spots get great visibility. I think these should be premium spots for one of next year's sponsors.
My favorite part of a cyclist message board. No matter what the original topic is, eventually conversation will evolve to what makes each of our individual 'taints happy.
^ Jules, I kinda don't know how to respond to that...I assume that is a reference to what makes your taint happy. Or has this verged to "foods I no longer eat because I am a cyclist" thread?
If it is the former, is that anything like Narwhal blubber chamois cream?
- Spring Series leaders jersey the entire series (Cat 5). - L&C PP looked after the green jersey for 50% of series for Yacks (Cat 4). - L&C FBF Series, currently wearing green jersey, 75% of series (Cat 4).
It's the same guy who attacked Devil's kitchen with standard gearing. OK, that day DK won, but he went back to climb the second KOM on stage 3 the same way.
I'm not sharing any state secrets here but Francisco & Matt (the NYVelo coaches) are big into strength training - correlated or not that team has a good number of guys who can sprint.
I discuss this topic with my coach a lot - his feeling is that for guys who are riding less than 10-12 hours a week; there is just way more bang for the buck to be had from quality work on the bike than in they gym.
Different story when you are already on the bike 10+ hours I presume.
Depends really what your limiters are. if your limiter is pushing a big gear then leg strengthening would help. Armstrong incorporated strength training into his program and he looked pretty muscular for a roadie. seems to have worked for him.
I never get as sore from biking, even riding 200miles or several days in the mountains, as I do after squats. I think it does help as long as you realize it will kill your legspeed and you'll have to retrain it after weight training. that said, it's hard for me to give up the endorphin addiction from cardio exercise and hit the gym. if i was a pro i'd probably commit to it.
I whipped up a quick design for an alternate kit... based on a Queens legend (I believe), and sticking true to NYC roots and being kickass and righteous. Tried to maintain a good balance of orange and blue.
