Marc,

At the time, it wasn't a waste of energy. It was a tactical gambit.  I wasn't going well following moves through turn four.  Sitting around to follow attacks going through turn four didn't look like a smart choice because I wasn't at my best there, and sitting around to let a move get away or get beat sprinting at the end didn't seem like a wise choice, either.  Doing these wouldn't play to my strengths.

Further, Sanchez had 1.5 teammates in the field mucking things up (Eugene sat at the back for at least 30 minutes before doing anything).  In the field, AXA/Stans had two, BH had two, and Blue Ribbon had two.  Everyone else was w/o teammates.  Margarite of AXA was a threat, but I felt the other two teams were not riding wisely, and as such, we were letting the race ride away.

After seeing that I was struggling through turn four, but yet able to roll by turn one, I decided the better move was to keep pressure on, see if I could drop those starting to wilt or not paying attention, encourage others to ride steady to bring back Sanchez (steady would have been faster) or roll off when others were resting seemed like my better choices.

Perhaps I should have done nothing and put it all on sprinting at the end.

Just remembered this and had a nice little chuckle:

The junior who won his race with a solo move on the last lap started his two-hand victory salute about 400 meters from the finish. He was just riding along with his arms in the air for like 15 seconds. It seemed to go on forever and it was fucking hilarious.
it was really only 200 meters, but even so, none of us have ever seen someone do it for 200 meters straight.

he actually stopped once (guess he got tired) then got his second wind

like saying goodbye twice at a party
Anyone thinking about doing this one on Sunday? Interesting crit course right across the GWB in beautiful Fort Lee, NJ. It's a four-corner deal with some elevation change that can hurt the sprinter types.
I'm hoping to be there.
Thinking about it but afternoon start times are tough...
Rene wins Cat 3 from 3 man break. He looked very strong and owned the sprint.

GTFO!

Pictures please!!!
I stopped by with Sarah for just a few minutes on our way back from upstate and caught only the last maybe 2/3 of the Cat 3 race. Had to leave before podium. Saw JP getting ready for 1/2 race.

When I got there Rene was already in the break with about a 20 second gap and 17 laps to go. He was with a CRCA junior and another guy in a red and black kit that I didn't recognize. They pulled it out to 35 seconds and held it there for the rest of the race. Rene took the sprint from quite a long way out.
I attacked two laps into the race and soloed for two laps  until sam from the crca devo team and RJ from Skyland bridged up to me .
That's a nice win Rene, congrats. Legit Cat 2 time.
Great win.  Congrats Rene!
Next stop UHC!
OK, off topic but anyone else notice how Lenny is getting more active on the boards as we approach the club champs??? Just sayin.
I saw that Jim.  (Proving you right?  or just coincidence?)
Still a month out, but this will probably be my last crit of the season.  Will need to recon the course sometime in August and hope I can gain a little more fitness by then.

I'll probably be in for that
I like this course.  Definitely helps to be both a good bike handler and possess lots of strength.  Turns three and four are where the race is made.  You need to be able to corner fast in three, stomp hard on the pedals til turn four, and not blow up exiting four.
Also that false flat out of 4... that drag hurts.

Wish this race didn't conflict with cross...
Do it anyway.  September 7 is the first week after labor day.  You'll have fitness from GMSR, and the crit will be a good transitional event to cross.  Besides, the CX season runs into decmeber.
I'm doing this Cat 3's. Riding there from the city. Anyone want to ride out together let me know.
@Craig - I'll be heading up.  Guesstimating cat4 field will start around 10am so I'll need to head up there by 9ish.  Will let you know if I'm driving.
I wish I could. Smash it Craig!
Plan to Smash it this weekend. The promoter said the Cat 3's should start around 11:15-11:45. I'm riding to the race from the city. Plan to see David and others there!
Warning No formatter is installed for the format not-found
I'm looking to do this one. Probably will do the Masters race.
I reg'd.  My first race as a 3!  Quite nervous.  Haven't been riding as much as I used to.  Craig, should we formulate a devious plan?  Here's what I think we should do: follow Jesus Martinez and then win instead of him.  So simple, yet so difficult.

sharpen those cornering skills!  You have to fly out of turn three and get out of the saddle the moment you stop turning.

Hoping to make the big boys race.
