I'm talking to Erik from TriBy3, which shares space with Acme and has 8 CompuTrainers. It's pretty nice -- a far cry from the dank, yet appropriately dungeon-like basement at Ride. It is located in Park Slope/Gowanus at 597 Degraw Street.
We are discussing back-to-back sessions again on Wednesdays: one at 6 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m. It looks like it'll even be a bit cheaper than last year, because Craig ;-)
Sign-up and payment occur at the TriBy3 website. There is one tricky bit: For December, the owner Erik has allowed us to purchase the 6 p.m. session one at a time. However, the 7:30 sessions must be bought as a package for all of December (three sessions).
1. Follow this linkand scroll to the week of 12/6/2014. You'll see the 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm Kissena Cycling Team sessions there on the calendar. Select the one you want.
2. You will then be prompted to create a login. (You can sign in with Facebook if you like.)
3. Click on Make a Single Reservation.
4. You'll see the options for purchase:
a. If you're signing up for the 6 p.m. session, choose Kissena Single Session.
b. If you're signing up for the 7:30 p.m. session, choose Kissena December Weekly 7:30 Package.
5. You'll see that the session or sessions have been added to your cart. If you picked the 7:30 p.m. package you can just check out. If you picked the 6 p.m. session, and want to purchase more of those in December, you'll have to go back to the calendar page again and do the process for each additional session to add them to you cart.
It's first come, first served, so hurry on over and sign up!
Everyone, please not that the December 6 p.m. sessions have been CANCELED due to lack of interest. 7:30 is still on for December. We will try to have two sessions for January and February.
The 7:30 session has now been opened up for a-la-carte purchasing. So if you only want to attend one or two, you can go in and sign up for them individually.
Great times with Whitey, Brucie V.S., and Adam F. After taking a 2 month (3? Who can tell anymore) vacation from any sort of training, the inaugural flat 40k course was unsurprisingly very difficult for me. 185+ heart rate the entire time and two separate incidents of calve cramps are a testament to my suckitude.
First: The training room is quite a change from Ride's spartan pain cave. It is a large and well lit open room with *ahem* fully functional machines. Erik was a really welcoming host (dude just finished an ironman on Sunday) and set everything up for us so we could get on with the session quickly. We will probably pick a course before future sessions so he can have it queued up and ready even faster.
We kept it together for the first half and then Adam decided to drop off to keep a steady spin going. The rest of us kept it civil for a hot minute, but we starting digging into each other soon enough. At one point Bruce may have been lulled by a steady pace and got caught out while staring at his stem for too long and lost track of the antics up ahead (we shall refer to this behavior as 'The Froome').
Whitey, being the smarter competitor, kept me in the wind and didn't let me in to draft much. Part of that was also my ignorance: I thought keeping minimal distance behind the rider in front meant less drag, but the optimal space is in the 7-15 range (?). During one of my jumps my calves cramped and froze. As Jeff closed in, Bruce chastised me and yelled that it was time to attack again. I put in a good couple of hundred feet between us, but Jeff sensed my fade and kept on a steady pace and caught up with about 4 miles to go. With the equivalent of a park loop left, we both called a temporary truce and recovered while eyeballing each other's numbers. We ramped it up with half a mile to go and before I knew it Jeff had the jump on me. I tried like hell to go after him but both my calves completely froze into painful lumps. I pumped my thighs futilely and he pipped me at the line like a boss.
I will exact my revenge next time.
...but first, there are office holiday cookies to be consumed.
I got to play my music this time on the speakers. Erik loved it and we bro'd out about it for a sec. Vlad would not have approved.
This place is pretty much the ideal setting for CompuTrainer. He has huge fans. One caveat is that you have to bring your own towels. I did not know this, but Bruce had a towel and several bandanas (what's up with Bruce's bandanas?), and he lent me his towel. Thanks, Bruce!
Get in on this, peeps.
OH, get a load of this shit: Erik can run a TTT sesh. Two teams of four. This will happen.
Strava tells me my average HR was 180. This does not make me happy. My legs cramped and out the window went the idea that I have actually been training.
The space is nice and the individual fans made a huge difference, but clearly my bandanas were picking up too much wind, causing drag I hadn't anticipated, and during one of the digs I fell off the back.
A hillier course next time, I think, as nothing says CompuTrainer than out of the saddle efforts at 4mph.
A great effort by everyone, and while we were there, Blyer was having a get together with some folks and a pro triathlete, one of those social engagements where you stand around a lot of really nice bikes and wish you were riding. We got to.
Good times with the crew last night. Great to have Ingrid and Daniella join!
The highlight (for me): I attacked early on the second climb while "Danger Zone" blasted over the speakers. Adam saw that there was plenty of uphill to go so let me beat myself up solo. He misjudged the thunder in my legs (probably due to how hairy and pale they are) and let me ride a little too long and couldn't close the gap fast enough.
The lowlight: Google radio's robot brains pulled up a crappy playlist. I propose Jeff White bring his soundtrack back because last week's was pretty killer.
I want to open a discussion about how to use Computrainer effectively, what we're supposed to get out of it, and ideas people may have beyond this. I'm hoping to hear from people who go regularly, coaches who may have used it for training, and anyone who hasn't gone but is familiar with it, or would like to participate.
My hr numbers have been exceedingly high during the last couple of sessions, and when I've done it in the past. This is in part why the sessions are difficult, and perhaps harder than actual park races where one can both draft and not pedal. This is December, and while race simulations are important psychologically and for practicing form, attacks, I think it's too early/late in the year to be going this hard.
I rode with Jonathan Blyer on Saturday, and he discussed Computrainer as a training tool coaches use for tempo and intervals, with riders being set at specific power numbers. I looked online and see individual projected views of people's workouts, not race courses. This seems a prudent way to have individualized group coaching sessions, with the idea of getting people fit and faster, using their own numbers.
This is the point where I recognize that traditionally. . . usually the team. . . we've always raced. I get this is the way it's done. My objectives are to build my fitness, build my strength, in such a way that makes sense to a training schedule in December and January, with the objectives of doing C races in March, B races in April. And I want to see my teammates get fit without burning out early in the season.
My plan is to train, and if we do a race course, I'm going to ride at an hr that puts me into a correct zone for the type of training I'm doing now, which means I won't be racing. Jeff W had a good suggestion that, with drafting turned on, I make sure to sit in and draft, if that allows for the type of workout I'm looking for. The issue becomes, of course, competition, which can be overwhelming at times; we've all succumbed.
Has anyone used Computrainer as a specific training tool, that has not been race-based?
Thoughts on going balls-out in December and January, if it's only once a week, for an hour, among friends? Fun vs too hard?
Drafting and non-drafting sessions, for easier workouts and racing?
Would others sign up if it was an individualized coaching workout session instead of a race? Or others not go because of that?
