Good question.  What makes it head scratch-worthy is that he raced in colorado last year, didn't have a problem, and he was at the front the whole race.  

@Wump I think the "just before" strategy might have to do with the speed of acclimatization - everyone seems to feel this race is higher than anything people are really used to.

Nibali was surprised too. but the six-second gap is by the rules, even though the race jury's decision was questionable.

Dieter might be his own worst enemy on FB. In the "omerta" thread, he seemed to like the idea of a 250-meter Gran Fondo.

It might be that there was some calculus around what would cost more from a performance standpoint; the altitude or many days of poor training at altitude while trying to acclimatize.

Jules, the "just before" strategy typically only works if it's a one-day race.  For the most part, when you go up at the last minute, performance deteriorates each successive day until you start to acclimatize, at which point, it starts to get better.  This is, both from what I've read and experienced, in the range of 5-7 days.  it's longer if you're worn out.  For Rodriguez, he had been at altitude in Utah, so he could have pretty much just rested his way to Colorado.

On the same topic, this is one of the better bit of coverage on the McQuaid empire...

Betsy is simply using the same doggedness and tenacity that Lance employed....If Lance should go to hell some day...she will follow him down.  

She is CRAY CRAY and really needs a new hobby, regardless.

I don't really get why people are picking on Betsy. I mean, I kind of feel sorry for her because she's obviously got this massive resentment that fuels her life - but its hard to judge her for being angry, given all that happened.

Gonna throw it out there - I wonder if people would find her resentment as offensive if she were a man. 

I like watching her - she's smart and justifiably pissed.  Plus the T-Shirt was brilliant, I wasn't being sarcastic.

@Ryan: I don't think I want to comment on the issue of sexism, but will say that what made me squirm was the contrast between the producer and director  having relatively profound things to say on topics of morality, humanity and film making and her harping on the minutiae of he said she said, which we've all heard before and felt rather beside the point. Vaughters wasn't all that illuminating, but at least he mostly kept his mouth shut in the presence of greater minds. And her accent didn't help- though that is more of a classist thing. I did not find her smart.

@Stokes I don't think it's a fair contrast.  The director & producer are wealthy successful men commenting on someone else's misfortune - and who have won the lottery in terms of golden footage for a documentary.

@david Vaughters let's his hipness do the talking. No need for words. Hey I'm not saying Betsy hasn't bugged the hell outta me before. She's like nails on a chalkboard sometimes. But it occurred to me as I was watching that perhaps that wasnt fair.
