can we see what his hematocrit was at the beginning of the Vuelta and during the third week, when it should have been going down steadily ? Nothing like those rest day blood bloods to tighten you up.

P.S.-Last time I had a blood test dome my hematocrit was at about 39, which sadly explains so much.

It's not an equivalent to horsepower. Some people can be just as fast with 39 as others are with 49.

The issue is that if you are 39 you have (had) a ton of headroom to dope under the arbitrary post Pantani limit of 50.

This is one if the big beefs of the non-dopers; they were weeded out of the sport based on natural hematocrit levels (too high) not on who was fastest.

Was thinking about Contador today after his drubbing in today's mid-week Italian race and found it interesting to review his palmares over the years.

This year he has only one win (Tour de San Luis stage 6). This is in stark contrast to when he seemed unbeatable as a stage racer (2009-2011). I don't remember anything particularly bad happening to him this year (injury or illness). What happened? He's only 31 and should be feeling his oats.

Retro 2006 article that I found after the name Matt DeCanio jumped out at me from an article in the NYTimes. Seems that I used to ride with him when I lived in Charlottesville and rode with the Monticello Velo team. He was a teenager at that time and I had no idea about what happened to him . . . Seems like he became an early anti-doper.
