The usb port on my Joule GPS started giving me trouble. The pins have become misaligned so that charging and data transfer are almost impossible. Called up cycleops and they are sending me a new one gratis, sight unseen without requesting return of the old one ('keep it as a spare,' he suggested!)

Data for left/right balance continues to be a problem, but at least now they acknowledge the issue and suggest that one might hope for a firmware update sometime (in a galaxy far far away).

Cyclops is to software what Lada is to automobiles.

Ok another side note. My Quarq has been acting insane or not at all for 2 weeks. Changed battery, etc. I either get zero watts, 600 for 10 minute efforts or an awesome 2000 watt sprint. Time to send it in?

As John Malcolmson said during today's group ride (of 2), you DO you have a power meter, that sounds like 350 watts. LOL. Cry. I'm now nostalgic for when my biggest gripe was gritty beverage.

Marc, short of reinstalling the BB, try my heavy oil temp fix. The stuff I use has the thick consistency of motor oil. Drip it around the perimeter of the BB shell/cranks and rub it in. I do it by laying the bike on either side. Let it set overnight. Creak went away after a mile or two of riding the next morning and hasn't come back since. Anticipating rain I dripped a bit more in last night.

Is there a specific oil brand/type I should buy from the usual online sources? #thingsIdon'tknow

I use a this stuff called 'Chain-L No.5' (a pun on the perfume by Chanel, groan). I bought it like 6 years ago and used it for year round commuting. Very sticky and doesn't wash out in rain, but chain/RD gunk builds up quickly. Smells and feels a lot like regular weight motor oil to me. Anyway, happy to hand off the bottle next time I see you.

It creaks when I breath on it. Seriously, in the saddle, out of the saddle, anything more than 100 watts, snapticcreak.

This is intriguing to me in its simplicity and ease of dealing with...namely I know JP has a big old torque wrench and he is used to me inviting myself over.

Going to take a mental breather from the road bike for a bit though, and focus on getting my cross bike rolling in time for the upcoming cross camp.

New Joule GPS arrived incredibly quickly. Improvements to body and to firmware and now rebranded as 'Powertap. This is my third free replacement. You could argue that a perfect device doesn't need to be replaced, but I don't think any of us have that device. I appreciate the responsive customer service. Also happy to hear that they finally acknowledge the issue with left/right balance. Maybe someday there will be a relevant firmware update.

With regards to Jules' comment about software, I only use the powertap/cycleops software to access my device. Otherwise, I use shareware for analysis (GC 3.1), which is completely independent of which computer you use to record the data. If you don't like it . . . write your own!

Thanks for the advice Thierry and JP. I amazon-ed this bad boy and found some new old stock on consignment. Toyed with the idea of getting the carbon fiber version (which is also, as near as I can tell, no longer manufactured by Blackburn, but more plentiful out there), as it was only $7 more, but honestly, the aluminum grey/silver I thought would look better on the bike. Medium sized pump is SNUG in my frame 54cm CAAD10. I'll still wrap it with a strap, but I don't think it will going anywhere.

@Marc - like others have suggested, check to see if other things are making the noise other than the BB. I brought my bike into the shop on Monday with the creaking BB complaint (Yang can attest to it) and they have a rule of thumb that when people complain of a creaking BB it is almost always something else. (In my case it was the BB - my bearings were shot - kind of made me feel proud that I worked them over)

Separately, I think you were asking about a frame pump. I got this Park Tool one which is adjustable and will fit multiple frame sizes and it's $25. Craig, I'm going to try the "easy" fix first. And try to rustle up that magic motor oil lube Yang was talking about and torquing the cranks down.

I doubt the bearings are shot, that would be insanity. I've never ridden this bike in the rain, and it's only gotten washed once, in it's relatively short life of 1 month on the road, plus a little spray here or there. Dear lord I hope the bearings aren't shot. 1 frigg'n month and my bike sounds like crap. (FWIW, it's not the pedals, I rode the same pedals on my other bike just this morning and nothing close to the symphony I get on the CAAD10)

But you know, that could just be my luck. I'm lucky like that. Unfortunately, getting to a bike shop, any bike shop, not to mention our shop, is a huge production that basically involves me hiring a baby sitter, getting Peter into a drop-in daycare, or going on a weekend day screwing with racing/training plans.

Brendan, do you have some of this mystery lube? Are you home tonight in the wee hours (say after 8:30pm?)

Try tightening pedals. Don't ask me why I suggest that!

I'd go with tightening the chainring bolts. 

Tighten and lube the QR skewers on your wheels.

I hear hanging a bike on the wall for a year isn't good for the noises...

buy another bike!!
