He also pointed out that he has only two sets of cross wheels, a clincher and tubular.  Trains on the clincher, races the tubular. (and he works for a tire company)

Sweet. Thanks for sharing. Most basic set up.

My clinchers have the PDX, my tubulars have challenge Grifos (standard chevrons, like the clement MPX)

On truly bad weather days, I might choose to race the clincher PDX

I'm increasingly dissatisfied with my stages, fwiw. Numbers don't seem to change as quickly (same refresh rate on head unit) battery seems to have sent warnings early and I get way more zeros (interference in the city?) than I ever did with PT, SRM or Quarq.

I also suspect it reads high relative to those others, which I find mildly heartbreaking.
I'm in agreement about stages, I have one on a winter bike and i find it OK for that purpose, logging long steady rides
Out of interest, is the dissatisfaction with Stages because of the bugs/poor build quality/errors or because of the single leg data extrapolation, or both?
I was thinking this morning that it's just a step above an iBike or whAtever that shit was.

Adam, not really sure. On the same ride I wondered if the suspiciously high numbers were because I'm left handed and therefore left leg dominant?

I'm ready to switch to a dual sided setup, just not that excited about either a hobby product from a GPS company or the alternatives.
btw on the note of clincher vs tubulars for cx...

this photo shows an obvs total fail, but here's the key part for me: that is Jonathan Page, racing a world cup on clinchers.

Woah...there's gotta be a story there. That's crazy-town. Page is infamous for self sabotage. Well, at least he had the good sense to run latex tubes.

You looked into PowerTap P1?
I've had water ingress. Batteries draining in a day. Then an inability to pair with a head unit unless I manually entered the ANT #.
I have the unit on a winter fixed and the numbers seem low. Probably because I favor my right leg.
I like Power2Max as a product, it works very well and the new price makes it very attainable. I was less enamored with the choice of cranksets. I would have liked a Shimano, but there are other options that are OK. A rotor P2M is quite a bit heavier than a Dura Ace stages, but given that I am fat bastard I don't care about such things.

I had not, but I'm not feeling very first-gen-y these days.

I ain't got time for this sh*t to not "just work." Truth be told I'm quite partial to Quarq - great customer service, easy battery maintenance and 1/2 the price of SRM.
DC Rainmaker, as usual with the A+ for thorough. But still not an answer I want. I am NOT recalibrating every fucking ride. That nonesense went out with the PowerTap in 2009

Jules,

I'm left-handed, but seem to be right-leg dominant, if only by a little.

On the second point, dual-sided, Matt told me the stages people weren't convinced it was any better--and they claim to have data from Sky.  It's also striking that Rotor and Pioneer are both doing single-sided.

Ian,
Considering your issues, they'd probably be happy to send you new caps or replace to keep you relatively satisfied.

Even if you are a fat bastard.

I was speaking with the Sommerville Sports guys.  They do Page's clothes.  They had them ready some time ago, offered to send, but Page never responded. So they delivered him the clothes at his hotel in a garbage bag Tuesday night.

I wouldn't be surprised if Page got his cross rigs for the year Tuesday as well.

Jules, JP, any real world updates/reports on WKO4? #Up'nmyPowerMeterGame

I'm sure I'll run into Hunter (and hopefully meet Tim) at InterBike.  I'm waiting til at least then.

At the same time, if you're itching to learn more, I'd check out hte wattage group.  Haven't been over there in a while myself.

Didn't meet Tim.  But saw Hunter, as I usually do.  He said there have been several updates to WKO4, migration no longer should be an issue.
Not even considering single sided accuracy, what bugs me the most is the synch dropping out. I think I read somewhere that some Garmin units have issues if a HRM isn't also synched up at the same time so I made sure to wear one every ride. Maybe it made a difference in the frequency, but it still drops out randomly. Happens indoors and out. User error? Who knows, but it is irritating.

Also the Rival cranks or the threaded to BB30 adapters (or both) cause more flex than the old carbon cranks so its been annoying to hear the chain rubbing on anything but an easy spin. I hear they are finally coming out with a native BB30 model which I might replace the current one with if I can figure out the first annoying issue.
I think the reason that spider based manufacturers don't want to go 2 sided is that measuring strain is simpler than torque where the fit of the bb is a confounding factor.

Yang the dropping issue may be due to older (like mine) Garmin units with only 4 ant channels.

I'm loathe to buy a new Garmin but it may a reasonable alternative to switching PM's and pedals to boot. I'm frankly always scared about switching pedals and what strange new injury that might precipitate.

@Jules

The "calibration" for Garmin Vector is that in name only.

-Turn on Garmin (you do that anyway when you ride)
-Settings
-Bike Profiles
-Select the current bike
-Ant+ Power
-Calibrate

Done in 5 secs.  The calibrate itself, i.e. how long after you click 'calibrate' to when is says it is calibrated is in the region of 4-6 seconds.  FWIW- maybe the 12 second total investment is worth it- never drops out on me and I use either an older Edge 500 or Edge 800 head unit.

It actually took more time for me to type that than to do it.  Once the pedals are paired the first time that's it.  Really not a significant process.  Choose whatever, but that's not a reason not to consider Vector.  Why are you on some sort of powermeter odyssey anyway?  Why are you changing it up so often.  You liked your Quarq, no?  Was it a BB issue on a new frame?
Quarq is BB30 and the giant is not. Ergo the move to stages.

If the Giant is threaded, Wheels has an adapter.  If it's BB86, SOL.  Or sell the BB30 and get a GXP.  That should adapt to BB86

They already have a BB30 Hollowgram.  And they were showing a carbon crankarm.
@Jules regarding Vector calibration: It's so small it's a non-issue (imo). Seriously. My garmin head unit takes longer to get a satellite lock than the calibration does. My routine goes like this:
 - spin crank by hand once or twice to wake up the power meters
 - turn on the garmin, it detects all the sensors,
 - the garmin prompts me to calibrate. i select "yes", "enter".
 - wait a few seconds and it's done

I did actually have a battery drain issue with the vectors about a year ago (and changing batteries *is* kind of a PITA), but Garmin replaced the pods for me and haven't had a problem since.

Kissena Homies,

I've been v quiet of late... adjusting to working again, a bout of hamstring tendonitis in April and a busted collarbone last month have kept me out of the game.

Anyway... this weekend I took the plunge, bought a Kickr and signed up for TrainerRoad.  After a couple of goes I have to say I have never been so excited about a) getting back into shape and b) riding through the winter.  The Kickr is a wonderful piece of tech.
Welcome back!
Welcome back Mark! How is the collarbone doing? I want to get a Kickr, anyone else keen?
I'm interested , but it will have to be a Christmas pressie for myself
I'm in for another Kickr. Again.
@vlad... another?

@JohnMalcolmson... collarbone is OK-ish.  Sling due off this week, few weeks of PT following. Hoping to be on the road, albeit gingerly, in a couple of weeks.

depending on the price I might be in for a kickr. I spent a small fortune on rollers last xmas and #1 on my xmas list for myself this year is a Roomba (more time to train) so it cannot be too expensive.
Yes, another Kickr for a super secret training location.
Is anyone else getting the new TCR? Thoughts in general? Probably going to order it pretty soonish as I'm pretty bikeless at the moment

I had this moment where I was in the porta-john in a pretty public park at the CT crit, and with several high profile pros getting their bikes stolen, I was thinking, well, if I come out of the John, and my CAAD10 is gone, I guess I'll be getting a TCR...or should I get one of those aero slick as shit looking badboys that a number of the club's members have...nah, I want it light.

"Fortunately" my bike was not stolen and I'll continue on with the CAAD10. Cross bike, now that's a more pressing issue...
