RVM was the most difficult ride I've ever done and also one of the most fun and interesting.  The loose gravel ascending dirt hills were pure torture and felt like they went on for miles.  Being a skinny legged weakling, 39x26 felt like 53x11 on some of those sections.  On the other hand going downhill on dirt roads with giant potholes was stupid fun and I can do that shit all day long.  I was in the last a lost group and we decided to ditch the route at mile 40ish and took the shortest way back.  We saw beautiful rolling hills, cows, magical long tailed deer, Chevrolet dealerships...all amazing sights for city slickers.

Philip and I missed the podium ceremonies driving backwards on the route looking for Mark, Jeff, and a few others that were not back yet.  But I have photos and my wife's description to picture it in my head ("They gave them shovels and picks!")

WDC and co did a great job of hosting and marshalling and being all around awesome dudes.  Thanks so much for making this happen.   And thanks to everyone else being super encouraging and friendly.  I'm really glad to have joined Kissena.

My wife says,"Everyone in your bike gang is really nice!"

Extra super happy bonus gundam points to Clifford for the lift.
Wow.. What a tough course. Thank you William, Al and Anthony for putting the race together. And WDC I'm always amazed how gracious your family is when you put on events. I'm glad to see Harry and Greg D back, missed you guys!

My race report:

We started out in WDC's driveway and it was freezing. Split up in to teams I got paired with Whitey, Dan H, and David Y. I was under the impression we would keep it friendly for the first 20ish miles. Stokes and Perlberg went early, to stretch things out on the downhill. Things were light and Mike P told funny stories to the peloton and made sure we enjoyed the scenery. Once we hit the first hill that created a little separation in the group and I think we were down to 15 or so. Then came the dirt section where John M was powering away from the pack. There was a chasing group of 7(ish) and everyone had a teammate except me. We were reeling John back in slowly and I wanted to make sure he wasn't with us for the rest (sorry John) I attacked. Mike and Ryan came across with me and it looked as if Alyosha was going to bridge across. After that Mike Ryan and I started working together for a bit and Al told us that we were coming close to the first KOM. I settled in behind Ryan hoping that maybe we could get a gap on Mike and work together to stay away. But once we hit the gravel Ryan would spin out whenever he would stand up. We crested the hill and I saw Al so I punched it got a gap and tired to hold it to the line. Once there we got neutralized and had to wait. On the downhill Mike caught back up. The three of us worked together for 10 miles then we hit the second KOM. Mike went first then Ryan countered and I just tried to hang on and made a jump to pass him at the end. The dirt section that followed was really tough riding, racing cross last year really helped with the unstableness of the gravel. Note: don't try to switch lines while biking in gravel, I almost ate it. Dave V was pretty funny on the bull horn and was narrating any road obstacles and heckling us. With about 15 to go Ryan and I knew if Mike made it to the end of the race we were racing for second. So I attacked and hoped that once I was caught Ryan would attack. I dropped my chain and both ryan and Mike waited for me. I thought that was very gentlemanly of them. We would crawl for a little bit then someone would attack. Over and over. Ouch. With about 6 to go Ryan rolled off the front and I wouldn't help mike chase. He said I cant I'm cramping but any time I would attack him he seemed like he could keep up, so I wasn't convinced. When we got to the final hill we were about 3 miles out and Mike got a big cramp and stopped biking. I couldn't believe it! I could still see ryan up the road so I settled in to try and bring him back. Once I was about 10 feet behind him I attacked and tried to make sure he couldn't come with me. I was able to get around him and he didn't come with me, so lucky! At that point I was ready to be done with the race. I was hurting so bad the last mile felt like forever. As I crossed the line I realized that this race was the first race I've ever won. Woot.

The food was amazing.

bwahaha! yang is 2 funny! i actualol'd!

thank you, my dear clubmates, for making the inaugural RvM the fabulous time that it was.  i've been dreaming about hosting such a race since Al, Anthony and I were painting my parents' house back in '09.

apologies for the confusing course and the conflicting turnsheets; next year's course will be (a) a 23 mile circuit, (b) fully marked and (c) far fewer long climbs . . . I want Malcolmson (or at least P'berg) to have a shot at the Axe next year.

Here's what I found laying around the house/car:
  • Small "new" KCC wind jacket (Ryan?)
  • Large "vintage" KCC wind vest (Stokes?)
  • Medium (?) "new" kcc bib shorts w/ orange chamois . . . one brown pube inside.
A few particular shout-outs:
  • Wilson Goode, in his first competitive cycling event, rode the entire course, finishing sixth, on one water bottle.  The dude was beyond cooked when he crossed the line, but I was super impressed.  I have a feeling he's a horse in the making.
  • John Malcolmson . . . while watching Joe attack again and again was awesome, the highpoint of the race for me (from the lead car) was watching John in my rear-view mirror while he absolutely drilled  the INCREDIBLY sketchy descent of Ridge road.  I had a hard time going fast enough in the car, and he was constantly riding up the Prius's ass, essentially drafting on a pot-hole filled gravel road.  Anthony's in the back screaming "go faster!!!" as if John were going to club us and eat our marrow if he caught up.   On one particularly sharp turn, I watched him overcook it, then . . . an explosion dead leaves as he rode off the shoulder . . . all of a sudden, he was back on the lead car's ass, T2000 style, Anthony screaming, Vollbach "Hail Marying".  Big NZ balls.
  • my "behind the seenz" crew: The KCC '12/'13 board, especially, Mike, Todd and Josh, for getting insurance, liability releases and throwing some money my way.  My tireless (and in two cases, nice-looking) crew of co-promoters/helpers: Anthony Cross, Al Barouh, Katherine Shanley, and Nicola McElroy, Jesus and my producer.

Awesome pics, need MORE!!!! :)
William didn't the photographer in the lead car take a ton of shots? Where are those?
Sounds like a lot of fun

Anthony took a ton of pictures, but they take time to process . . . stay tuned
@William. Thanks for the shout out, I'm sure glad I stopped short of the log!
I want to tack on my huge thanks to the William, Al, Katherine, Nicola crew. And lest we forget the Doyle-Capitman's for generously turning their house over to a throng of schwetty, uncooth randonneurs. Good times!

@Joe. No hard feelings for mercilessly shelling me—although it derailed my evil plan to get the lead car out of sight, leaving you all lost in some rattlesnake cave—I took your attack as a compliment... a very painful compliment.

John M. debriefing post-race
faulty cxn...here it is.

Love this shot ... It's Rapha-esque in its epicness... https://plus.google.com/app/basic/photos/109812292357390581688/album/5864289824023978305/5864503247810485650?cbp=bge8ydw9n5s0&sview=20&authkey=CPaFgK_zvfCIXw
@Clifford - Rapha's most epic photos are in b&w, thus this may be the most Raphepicessnest...

My pant legs are fitting extra tight this morning. Thanks, William!

@Jeffrey White

In an alternate universe (like maybe one where FC did not win Paris-Roubaix) that sounds weird.

My pant legs are fitting extra tight this morning. Thanks, William!

my pants always feel tight.
