When those guys were doing full-on attacks on that twisty-ass finishing descent, I could not believe my eyes. I was genuinely afraid for them -- and myself, since I think I might have been Stearnsing.

Like a boss indeed! I agree, this Vuelta kicks the TdF's ass so hard...so many climbs, great riders and awesome landscapes as well.
The eurosport commentators said it well, without him this stage would have seen the leaders just stringing on riders until they dropped silently. But those punches are the reason I like the man and Voeckler, now that's true European racing.

I agree it was way more entertaining but.....

Most of those guys can't attack at that pace. Notice when Contador went at it he only brought 3 along and of those 3 I'm pretty sure Froome never managed a counter attack. So of the entire field there are 2 other guys who can "entertain" us.

So yes, I agree he makes the race more interesting, but you have to be riding at a different level. Kinda like when Bonds, Sosa, and McGuire were bashing countless home-runs. Now that certainly made baseball more entertaining.

See, I don't think you need to be at a different level but able to first of all maintain that steady pace yes, that's certain and second, be able to recover while riding 24kph up a 11% gradient or smthg of that sort. I agree, it seems insane but those attacks are not sustained pace, when the attack slows down they are probably going just as a fast as the people behind. the prowess is to have that kick, recover, and be able to go again.
